Thanks everyone

Lausanne looks incredible

I am using Geneva as a stop gap for Monaco

my concern is , is Lausanne a good play for a guy traveling on his own? The same question applies for Geneva

What are the speed limits in Switzerland (on expressways) and how strictly are they monitored?

Everything you need is that

At CH there are fixed speed cameras at the motorway. At the last summer where I drove at the A1 between Lausanne and the Border until France, I had the feeling that there is every 5km a fixed speed camera. The fines are high.

No problem. Speaking French would be a plus. Geneva should be better because of all the diplomats.

All Swiss cities above 100K have lot's of bars and restaurants. Meeting people on the fly is a problem here, even I don't know how it is in Geneva, but Switzerland is not like Australia or the US where people just start to chat with you.

Very strickt. You should stick to the limits, I usually use cruise control so I don't have to care about speeding to much.

Very strictly and expensive! https://www.ch.ch/en/driving-over-speed-limit/

Please consider one important thing: exceeding the limit over e certain value, You get into "criminal law", which means:
- driving licence is withdrawn immediatly. You cannot drive anymore. If nobody can takeover Your car, it will be pulled to a depot.
- you have to give a caution in SF (probably credit card is accepted, but I'm not sure).
- summon in front of a judge who will establish the fine considering Your financial status.
- and some other unlikeable consequences.
Take a look at this link (edit: same link a MichiH). Could be helpful.

It depends highly on which part of Switzerland you are. In A1 between Geneva and Lausanne there are speed cameras everywhere and nobody drives over the speed limit, but I saw almost none on A13 -and much of the traffic was doing 140-150.

Wow! Thank you for the heads up. I routinely go way higher than the speed limit here in the USA but I guess I'll have to act accordingly in Switzerland

So I guess in between cities it doesn't matter..

I think I'll just see how everyone else is driving

Speed limits are monitored very strictly and there are also mobile speed traps, some of them hardly visible. I just came across one sitting on the shoulder when I was driving back from Zürich to Bern two days ago.
In some Cantons also safety distance is strictly monitored, so apart from speeding tailgating is a very bad idea too.

But if I'm honest, I don't know why we have to talk about such things here. Just stick to the rules and you'll not have any problems.

The road between Göschenen and Andermatt has been closed because of a landslide, and will be so maybe for weeks. Until the opening of the Gotthard pass the only alternative are via Brig-Lötschberg shuttle or via Chur, or the Göschenen-Andermatt railway which being mostly in tunnel is less exposed to landslides (passenger trains every 30 minutes, but no car shuttle (impossible anyway, because of the 18% ramp)).

What do you mean by "the only alternative"? The list of the alternatives doesn't make sense at all.

Göschenen - Andermatt is closed due to a landslide. This isolates Andermatt from the north, because the Furka Pass and Grimsel Pass are still under a winter closure. The best alternative from the north would be the Gotthard Tunnel, and then double back across the Gotthard Pass. But of course the Gotthard Tunnel is congested during weekends.

Andermatt can also be reached via the Oberalp Pass, but that is an east-west route, the closest north-south route is A13 near Chur, which is also a huge detour if you're coming from Luzern or Zürich.

the Göschenen-Andermatt road will remain closed until at least 15 July. The restaurant on the Gotthard Pass reports to have lost 90% of its customers.

***********

63% of voters in Canton Zug rejected the stadttunnel (citytunnel) project. It would have been a complex tunnel system with an underground roundabout like the one in Tromsø (Norway), although on a smaller scale. If built, barriers would have been placed on some city roads so to force drivers to use the tunnel.

nur einfahren = entry only

nur ausfahren = exit only
