A4 Schaffhausen - Winterthur - Zürich - Cham

Click on the title for all 133 pics.

This set runs from the German border near Schaffhausen via Winterthur to the famous Zürich ringroad, including the brand-new portions of the A3/A4.

route:

1. Direct na de grens.
image hosted on flickr

2. Dit nog de J15, die een autoweg is.
image hosted on flickr

3. Toeristenbord.
image hosted on flickr

4. Na deze afslag begint de vignetplicht.
image hosted on flickr

5. We volgen "transit".
image hosted on flickr

6. Verzweigung Mutzentäli. Hier begint de A4.
image hosted on flickr

7. De A4 komt hier vanaf Donaueschingen.
image hosted on flickr

image hosted on flickr

image hosted on flickr

image hosted on flickr

11. Tunnel-brug-tunnel. Over de Rhein.
image hosted on flickr

12. Afslag Uhwiesen.
image hosted on flickr

13. Afstanden.
image hosted on flickr

14. De A4 wordt hier verbreed naar 2x2 rijstroken.
image hosted on flickr

15. Afslag Benken.
image hosted on flickr

16. Afslag Trüllikon is hier afgesloten.
image hosted on flickr

17. Werkzaamheden.
image hosted on flickr

18. Afslag Adlikon.
image hosted on flickr

19. Winterthur is een grote stad met 100.000 inwoners.
image hosted on flickr

20. Verzweigung Winterthur-Nord.
image hosted on flickr

21. Wij gaan naar Zürich.
image hosted on flickr

22. De snelweg begint hier dan. Evenals de dubbelnummering met de A1.
image hosted on flickr

23. Afslag Wülflingen.
image hosted on flickr

24. Nu wat verdere afstanden.
image hosted on flickr

25. Winterthur-Töss.
image hosted on flickr

26. 2x3 rijstroken. Matig wegdek.
image hosted on flickr

27. Tankstation Kemptthal.
image hosted on flickr

28. Effretikon.
image hosted on flickr

image hosted on flickr

30. 10.45 uur, lekker op tijd.
image hosted on flickr

31. Nu komt het Brüttiseller Kreuz.
image hosted on flickr

32. Met de A53 naar Rapperswil en Uster.
image hosted on flickr

image hosted on flickr

34. Afslag Wallisellen.
image hosted on flickr

35. Drukke bewegwijzering.
image hosted on flickr

36. Verzweigung Zürich-Ost. Naar Zürich-City gaat de A1L.
image hosted on flickr

37. 5 wegnummers, toe maar.
image hosted on flickr

38. Direct daarna volgt Verzweigung Zürich-Nord. Daartussen 8 rijstroken.
image hosted on flickr

39. De A51 naar Bülach en de luchthaven Kloten.
image hosted on flickr

40. Afslag Zürich-Seebach na de tunnel.
image hosted on flickr

41. Luzern komt erbij.
image hosted on flickr

42. Afslag Zürich-Affoltern.
image hosted on flickr

43.
image hosted on flickr

image hosted on flickr

45. Direct erna het Limattaler Kreuz. Het drukste knooppunt van Zwitserland meen ik.
image hosted on flickr

46. Ik ga hier richting Luzern en Chur.
image hosted on flickr

image hosted on flickr

48. Urdorf-Nord.
image hosted on flickr

49. 2x2 rijstroken.
image hosted on flickr

50. San Bernardino is nog 194 kilometer.
image hosted on flickr

51. Urdorf-Süd.
image hosted on flickr

image hosted on flickr

53. Nog een tunnel.
image hosted on flickr

54. Verzweigung Zürich-West direct na de tunnel.
image hosted on flickr

image hosted on flickr

56. Even de A3 clinchen.
image hosted on flickr

57. Deze tunnel is zo'n 4 kilometer lang.
image hosted on flickr

58. Verzweigung Zürich-Süd.
image hosted on flickr

image hosted on flickr

================================

60. Weer terug bij de Verzweigung Zürich-Ost. Ausfahrt Birmensdorf.
image hosted on flickr

image hosted on flickr

image hosted on flickr

63. Wat zuidelijker begint de A4 weer.
image hosted on flickr

64. De A4.
image hosted on flickr

65. Afslag Cham.
image hosted on flickr

66. Afstanden.
image hosted on flickr

67. Verzweigung Rütihof.
image hosted on flickr

68. Ik ga hier de A14 op naar Luzern.
image hosted on flickr

69. Laatste foto.

One reason for many roads with bad quality in Switzerland is, that they where actually build for 28T trucks, then with the Bilaterals I the limit was lifted to 40 tonne.

Video: A2 Luzern. This video runs from the A14, then the A2 through Luzern through the underground interchange Lopper to the A8.

Lol, what a nonsense site.

Big trucks are better because 1) they consume less fuel per moved tonne, and 2) reduce the amount of trucks, because two of these monster trucks would otherwise been 3 normal 16m trucks.

Which new road? From Birmensdorf to Cham? It's just a landstraße, no big deal, some villages, no big delays.

The video is double speed. I usually kept to the speed limit, which was 80 and 100 km/h

A16 Biel/Bienne - Porrentruy

Click on the title for the full 96-picture set

The A16 is a relatively new, and still under construction motorway in northwestern Switzerland, through the Jura mountains. It connects the bilingual city of Biel/Bienne with the French border towards Belfort. Three sections of it are completed as of summer 2009, but the whole motorway has to be completed as late as 2016. A significant amount of it is through tunnels.

route:

1. In Biel/Bienne. It cost me more time to get from A6 to A16, than I expected.
image hosted on flickr

2. At the A16-A5 roundabout.
image hosted on flickr

3. Massive bridge above the city.
image hosted on flickr

4. 83km to the French border. It's much shorter as the crow flies, but the terrain is very difficult.
image hosted on flickr

5. After a few kilometers, the A16 turns into two one-way roads.
image hosted on flickr

6. A very curvy alignment through here. More than 80 km/h is hard to achieve.
image hosted on flickr

7. Also: lot of tunnels. Note the cycle lanes to the right.
image hosted on flickr

8. Another tunnel.
image hosted on flickr

9. The Jura consits mostly of steep cliffs here.
image hosted on flickr

10. Some industrial area.
image hosted on flickr

11. Exit Péry. Cyclists have to exit here too.
image hosted on flickr

12. Through the mountains.
image hosted on flickr

13. La Heutte.
image hosted on flickr

14. Finally a 100 km/h part.
image hosted on flickr

15. Distances.
image hosted on flickr

16. Sonceboz.
image hosted on flickr

17. Another tunnel.
image hosted on flickr

18. End of the A16 (temporarily)
image hosted on flickr

19. Through some towns. I wanted to take the same way back and get onto A5 to Neuchâtel, but I decided to go to Basel, didn't want to go through all those towns and Biel/Bienne again.
image hosted on flickr

20. Gas prices in EUR.
image hosted on flickr

21. Through a canyon.
image hosted on flickr

22. Roadworks.
image hosted on flickr

23. A16 viaduct.
image hosted on flickr

24. This part of A16 is only one-laned and consits of basically one big tunnel.
image hosted on flickr

25. Back on the surface streets again.
image hosted on flickr

26. Accessing the A16 again at Delémont. Note that the French A36 is already signed.
image hosted on flickr

27. Delémount-Ouest.
image hosted on flickr

28. The A16 often lacks a shoulder.
image hosted on flickr

29. Landscapes.
image hosted on flickr

30. Bassecourt.
image hosted on flickr

31. Bassecourt exit... almost no traffic here.
image hosted on flickr

32. Exit Glovelier.
image hosted on flickr

33. This is a long tunnel.
image hosted on flickr

34. Exiting the tunnel, the next one is right ahead.
image hosted on flickr

35. Courgenay exit.
image hosted on flickr

36. Belfort is only 41km... it feels further away somehow.
image hosted on flickr

37. Porrentruy-Est...through traffic to France has to exit here.
image hosted on flickr

38. Porrentruy-Est... I decided to continue down the A16.
image hosted on flickr

39. Another tunnel.
image hosted on flickr

40. Porrentruy-Ouest...end of the A16.

I think A16 is one of the most interesting motorways, however the 2-lane main road is pretty dull IMO.

Nope!

I just clean the windshield when necessary, and chose the time and weather carefully

By the way, insects and bugs are not so much a problem in CH, probably due to the altitude.
