BTW the A16 is build for only one reason, to please the Jura. As you can see on the pics the motorway is almost empty. This is structural subvention of a poor region.

like M6 in hungary... (we make tunnels too to make it more similar)
but in our case not only that region is poor, but the whole country...

A2 Luzern - Bellinzona

Click on the title for the full set of 123 pics

This set runs across the A2 from Luzern to Bellinzona, a distance of about 140 kilometers, including the Gotthard tunnel. It passes through the main Alps chain.

route:

1. Op de A2 vanaf de A14 in Luzern.

2. Afslag Emmen-Süd.

3. Luzern-Zentrum
image hosted on flickr

4. De afslag zelf zit in de tunnel.
image hosted on flickr

5. Luzern-Kriens. Met taper.
image hosted on flickr

image hosted on flickr

image hosted on flickr

8. Verzweigung Lopper. Een ondergronds knooppunt.
image hosted on flickr

9. Stansstad.
image hosted on flickr

image hosted on flickr

11. Stans-Nord.
image hosted on flickr

12. Stans-Süd en Engelberg.
image hosted on flickr

13. Afstanden: Milano voor het eerst aangegeven.
image hosted on flickr

14. Het vierwoudstrekenmeer.
image hosted on flickr

15. Afslag Buochs.
image hosted on flickr

16. Afslag Beckenried.
image hosted on flickr

17. De Seelisbergtunnel. 9,3 kilometer lang. Niet zo bekend als de Gotthardtunnel.
image hosted on flickr

18. Afslag Altdorf.
image hosted on flickr

image hosted on flickr

20. Afstanden. Milano mist hier.
image hosted on flickr

21. Erstfeld en slecht wegdek.
image hosted on flickr

image hosted on flickr

23. Het dal wordt hier smaller.
image hosted on flickr

24. We zijn nog lekker vroeg.
image hosted on flickr

25. Afslag Amsteg.
image hosted on flickr

26. Milano 190 km.
image hosted on flickr

27. Nu volgen een boel tunnels.
image hosted on flickr

28.
image hosted on flickr

29.
image hosted on flickr

image hosted on flickr

31. Een Galerie.
image hosted on flickr

32. Wassen.
image hosted on flickr

33. Nog twee kilometer tot de tunnel.
image hosted on flickr

image hosted on flickr

35. 60 km/uur vanwege de vrachtwagendosering even verderop.
image hosted on flickr

Continu stoppen-optrekken bergopwaarts. Óh wat goed voor de luchtkwaliteit... Zwitserland is goed in vrachtwagentje pesten.
image hosted on flickr

37. Daar gaan we dan... 17 kilometer.
image hosted on flickr

It's also good to connect central-western Switzerland (including Bern) with the French A36 motorway. Berne and Paris are now badly connected.

Nice pics of A2! The part in the Leventina Valley (between Gotthard and Bellinzona) is like driving through a rain forest.

A8 is one of the most beautiful Swiss expressways/motorroads. The Giessbach Tunnel is special though. In winter (when it's cold outside), the tunnel is so warm and humid that dew immediately starts covering your car's windows. As the tunnel is quite long (> 3 km), you must open your windows in order not to crash. It was completely unexpected, so at first I thought something was wrong with my car (rather unlikely though, Peugeot 406). When I came out of the tunnel on the eastern side, an open expressway starts, with frequent plane flights accross it (you can see the sign at 0:03), but I didn't notice the sign. Of course a plane came very lowly and was making a horrible noise, so now I thought my car was f***ed completely!

Official website with a lot of photos and plans: http://www.a16.ch/

Dotted parts are tunnels: http://www.a16.ch/A/071130_%20A16carte-generale.pdf

Planned opening dates: http://www.a16.ch/A/A16_info_03-2008.jpg (red = yet in service)

This motorway costs about 3,9 billion euro, or 45,6 millions/km.

A5 in Neuchâtel: http://www.ne.ch/neat/site/jsp/rubri...jsp?DocId=6952 (FR)

Artificial tunnel opened on one side, with the motorway below and the national road (used now for local traffic) above:

Noise barriers in Bissone:

The mayor wanted an artificial tunnel, because the motorway cut the village in two. Where a tunnel is really justified, they don't build it...

Why? Tunnels are expensive, but The Netherlands is absolutely flat...

Does this A4 run in a densely built up area?

No, it runs on a path that's been cleared since 1960.

However, environmentalist actions and NIMBY's of the Schiedam municipality have caused this road to be constructed underground partially. However, it's still a ridiculous pricetag for 7 km of 2x2 motorway.

Awesome pics. I drove the same way last year. It was very rainy though. Why the Dutch commentary actually?

Crossing the lake is my favorite spot on Swiss motorways. Tell me something, Coccodrillo: one building in "Mini Switzerland" in Melide is there just for fun, isn't it? I never saw it anywhere in Switzerland.

Chris, did you see the Trümmelbach Falls?

Which building?

There is a replica made with wood of the Duomo, Milan's Cathedral, but it is placed outside the main scenery, between the toys for children.

If you like the lake exit in Bissone (or Mendrisio) and follow the national road instead until Lugano. Outside rush hours it isn't congested and takes only few minutes more.

Not now, but I have been there in the 90's. The advertorial pics were still the same black-and white pics....

I can't believe I didn't recognize it. You're right:

But it's from Italy, so I didn't think of it.

I sadly never took the old road (except between Lugano and Bellinzona, good road), I was in Morcote though, very lovely (and in Campione d'Italia).

Reopening the Gotthard road: http://www.funiforum.org/funiforum/s...ead.php?t=6221

The first photos were made on the 7th May. There are also photos of others alpine roads.
