Some interesting regional variations in the Swiss traffic behavior, according to a study which surveyed from 1997 to 2007.

Romandie = French speaking Switzerland (also: Westschweiz)
Deutschschweiz = German speaking Switzerland
Tessin = Ticino, Italian speaking Switzerland

The number of severely injured and killed dropped 21% in Deutschschweiz, 10% in Tessin and only 7% in Romandie

In Romandie, 35% of the fatal accidents was related to speed. In Deutschschweiz this was 21%, and 8% in Tessin.

DUI (Driving Under Influence), caused 20% of fatal accidents in Romandie, 19% in Tessin and only 11% in Deutschschweiz.

Seatbelt-usage is also low in Tessin, where 32% of the fatal accidents included a driver without seatbelt. This was 22% in Romandie and only 16% in Deutschschweiz.

Motorcycle traffic deaths were the highest in Tessin at 51%, against 33% in Romandie and 26% in Deutschschweiz.

Traffic safety was worst in Tessin, best in Deutschschweiz.
Why nobody cares of the mighty Graubünden? It's a German-Italian speaking Canton.

My video camera has two SD slots, very convenient. That way you don't have to buy those überexpensive 32 / 64 GB SD cards.

Well, I have about 4X 16GB SHDC Cards. I use them also for the DSLR Cam, and a other compact cam.

But the Battery only holds about 1:45h. And I dont can charge and use it at the same time...

The standard JVC battery lasts 2 hours and 30 minutes approximately. But they also have better batteries that are supposed to last 5 and even 8 hours.

about vignette: is it mandatory only for motorways and expressways, or for all roads?

here is what they say on official web-page: Das Fahren auf Nationalstrassen 1. und 2. Klasse ohne gültige Vignette bzw. mit einer missbräuchlich verwendeten Vignette wird mit einer Busse von 100 Franken bestraft. Zudem muss eine Vignette gekauft und am Fahrzeug angebracht werden.

but what are Nationalstraßen 1. und 2. Klasse?!

"Nationalstraßen 1. und 2. Klasse" are motorways (like A1, A2, ...) and motorroads (like part of the A4 and A13) respectively, these with the green sign.

http://autoroutes.suisse.free.fr/Types.htm

I don't know if the vignette is mandatory on the Gotthard and San Bernardino tunnels, that are the only link with the Tessin canton during winter (without counting the long and sometimes closed Lucomagno/Lukmaneir Pass road). But probably yes.

The Gotthard Tunnel now ranks third by length since another one opened in China: http://www.lotsberg.net/data/tun10.html

That's a nice way of recording a trip! I usually put it on a rubber-covered book, directly on the dashboard

I'm wondering about the suffixed A routes: A1a, A4a, A1.1, A1H, A1L, A3W.

From looking at photos on the web, I found that half of these (A1a, A4a, A1.1) are signed in the usual red hexagon so that travelers can refer to them.

But I couldn't find the other half (Zurich spurs A1H, A1L, A3W) on any sign in a web photo nor on the Swiss ASTRA web site. Yet they do show up on Google Maps, Yahoo Maps, www.autobahnen.ch, and http://motorways-exitlists.com/. Are these just internal designations not intended for the public? Would the average traveler know what A1L is?

Also, is there a difference in meaning between -a and -.1?

You are not alone...

There are two A1a in Genève and one in Lausanne.
