Another set of graphics, but don't worry, they are the last ones...

(all are vehicles per day, buses included except in the last graphic)

There may be more precise statistics somewhere on the government's website, but I don't know if it is really worth to search for them.

I didn't expect the Gran San Bernardo tunnel to have caught up with the Monte Bianco tunnel already.

Monte Bianco and Frejus tunnels have many more trucks, however.

people, i am planning something and i would like to know about those horrible jams at Gotthard tunnel: when do they happen? and what do you think about them in the week between 20th and 26th June?

Usually friday afternoon-saturday southbound, sunday afternoon northbound. The same for San Bernardino.

Alternatives like the Lukmanier (pass) or the Simplon-Lötschberg (train shuttle) may be quicker.

there is no way for alternatives because i wanna pass right through the tunnel. i am thinking about trip in that week and that's an opportunity to go through Gotthard. i'll still see it. thanks for information.

What about the Gotthard Pass? Is it congested when there is a queue before the tunnel?

The Gotthard Pass may be an alternative if you quit the motorway well before the tunnel (then in 44 Biasca-43 Faido from the south, 38 Amsteg-39 Wassen from the north). You can also quit the motorway some exits before the tunnel and re-enter the motorway just before the tunnel in Airolo or Göschenen, but these entrances are sometimes (especially Göschenen) closed when there is much queue. In any case the pass road is quite fast, on the southern side it is similar to the southern ramp of the San Bernardino (but without the third lane for slow uphill vehicles). I suggest you to take the pass, the tunnel is just...a tunnel.

The pass has less queue than the tunnel as all German and Dutch toutrists prefer to wait for hours rather than looking for alternatives...but also here traffic can be intense.

Tomtom's are great

Funny, I was just about to ask the same question about the Gotthardtunnel. Coming from the North this summer on the 15th of july. Any trouble?

A while ago I was at a gas station, and an older lady came to me, said she didn't understand her TomTom. She was trying to navigate to an aunt. Instead of the address, she typed "aunt Lydia" in her GPS.

I bet many tourists simply insert their vacation address on their GPS and simply follow it no matter what. The age of preparing a journey is kind of over. I remember when my parents got those free maps, and marked their route with a marker on the map, and also considered alternates. Nowadays it's so bad people hear about a traffic jam on the radio but have no clue whether it's on their route or not.

well, i have a road-geek fetish on tunnels (and toll stations)

about navigations - i also have TomTom on iPhone and it works excellent so far.
in company's car i use Mio Moo, not bad, it has much better translation onto Croatian, but somehow i prefer TomTom.

Friday 15th July? Go the North Sea instead.

(or book a combined Kandresteg-Iselle shuttle, it's more expensive but faster)

@x-type: go on the Luzzone dam then

There are also the Munt la Schera, the train shuttles, and certainly other public tunnels near hydroelectric power plants.

Or...Gotthard tunnel-Furka tunnel train shuttle (you travel in your car, unlike the Tauern shuttle)-Grimsel pass (a few tunnels)-Susten pass (also here)-A2 Wassen-Flüelen (tunnel-bridge-tunnel series)-A4 Flüelen-Brunnen (series of short tunnels along the cliff)-then...I don't know. If you like tunnels try also a train shuttle (except the Vereina, as it has closed wagons) boarding the train first (so as to travel in the first wagon, that has no roof), I assure you it's worth.

this is what I said

exit in Faido and enter again in Airolo

in the other direction this is not possible as Göschenen is closed on peak days (Airolo is often but not always opened)

or travel outside the weekend
