Manila Bay

Manila Bay
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

image hosted on flickr

Manila Bay is one of the finest natural harbors in the world which serves the port of Manila (on Luzon), in the Philippines. The entrance is 19 km wide and expands to a width of 48 km. Mariveles, in the province of Bataan, is an anchorage just inside the northern entrance and Sangley Point is the former location of Cavite Naval Base.

On either side of the bay are volcanic peaks topped with tropical foliage: 40 km to the north is the Bataan Peninsula and to the south is the province of Cavite.

Across the entrance to Manila Bay are several islands. The largest is Corregidor, which is 3 kilometers from Bataan and, along with the island of Caballo, separates the mouth of the bay into the North and South Channels. In the south channel is El Fraile Island and outside the entrance, and to the south, is Carabao Island. El Fraile, a rocky island some 4 acres (16,000 m²) in area, supports the massive concrete and steel ruins of Fort Drum, an island fortress constructed by the United States Army to defend the southern entrance of the bay. To the immediate north and south are additional harbors.

The bay was the setting for the Battle of Manila Bay in 1898 and the siege of Corregidor Island by invading Japanese forces in 1942.

Atienza optimistic waters in Manila Bay ‘could still turn blue’

By ELLALYN B. DE VERA

Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Jose Atienza Jr. expressed yesterday optimism that the waters of Manila Bay "could still turn blue" with the help of the local government units (LGUs) in Metro Manila.

"I would like to initiate efforts to improve the condition of the waters of Manila Bay. It’s one of the priorities that I would like to pursue (by exerting) really serious efforts on these bodies of water," Atienza said, recalling how he enjoyed watching the waters of Manila Bay from the Roxas Blvd. (formerly called Dewey Blvd.) seawall during his younger days.

"The waters of Manila Bay could still turn blue. The bay has a way of reactivating itself. That’s Mother Nature," the DENR chief said.

Atienza admitted that the cleanup of Manila Bay was one of his frustrations during his stint as Manila mayor.

He said the cleanup of Manila cannot be done by the Manila city government alone, adding that as the present chief of the DENR, he will seek the help of other LGUs in Metro Manila in cleaning the bay.

Atienza attributed the lack of a systematic waste disposal system in Metro Manila as one of the culprits in the pollution of the waters.

"We have to address the sewerage system in the metropolis because if we don’t have proper sewerage systems, water waste will go directly into the bay, and that further pollutes it," he said. "Metro Manila still does not have a waste disposal system based on the law that will give a solution to its waste problem. We have a law, but it’s not being (fully) implemented," he said.

Atienza also said that addressing the problem of pollution in Manila Bay is not impossible because Filipinos are already aware of their responsibilities to Mother Nature and the environment.

"Money is not even a problem. There are a lot of groups and individuals willing to fund projects involving the cleanup of Manila Bay."

I think this is a good thread since Manila Bay encompasses the shorelines of Metro Manila, Cavite, Bulacan and Bataan..... and since Manila Bay is as important as Pasig River since this are the bodies of water to which Manila has grown from...

we should have shots of the sunsets here..

Yep everyone, take note that Manila Bay is not just Baywalk. It would be nice to see photos of the portions of Manila Bay in Cavite, Bulacan and Bataan as pau mentioned.

I think Lim did the right thing...BUT I'm not in favor to his attitude of total abolishment of nightlife activity along Roxas Blvd.

DENR chief calls for Manila Bay cleanup

Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Jose "Lito" L. Atienza Jr. has called for the cleanup of Manila Bay as he announced the holding of a conference on this subject involving local government units (LGUs) surrounding the bay.

"In a couple of weeks, a conference will be conducted. We must (reach out to Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim) to host the conference in Manila. We have to get the LGUs to cooperate," Atienza said.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) chief said the conference will device ways of cleaning up the Manila Bay and installing wastewater treatment facilities.

"When I was still a local official of Manila, I was waiting for a direction from the national government for this project. But now that I’m in the national government, I can now go about the project," the former Manila mayor said.

He said LGUs in Bataan, Navotas City, Caloocan City, Manila, Pasay City, Parañaque City, and Cavite, where water treatment plants are not yet established, will be called to join the conference.

Water concessionaires Maynilad Water Services Inc. and Manila Water Co., local water utilities, and the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System would be invited to participate.

The DENR is also seeking the support of international financial institutions such as the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank that are willing to improve the environment by funding the cleanup.

Atienza said the cost of the project has not yet been established, but he estimated that it could cost billions of pesos.

He said water from sewer lines of houses and business establishments should be treated at wastewater treatment plants before it goes into the bay.

As such, Maynilad and Manila Water should take part in the treatment of wastewater going to the bay by installing wastewater treatment plants, Atienza said.

"In our water bills, there’s a portion (allotted) for the construction of treatment facilities. Have they been using this fund for the construction of this treatment plant, the Manila Bay can be cleaned up," he said. "Aside from Maynilad and Manila Water, local water utilities, LGUs, and the MMDA should also join in the treatment of wastes," he added.

The DENR chief said that in other countries, investors spend for the installment of wastewater treatment facilities which, he said, eventually results in economic gains.

He said Sydney in Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, and major cities in China have progressed after they conducted the clean up of their bodies of water.

"China cities Xiamen and Shanghai, for example have improved their economy since they cleaned up their rivers and other bodies of water," Atienza said.

"In 10 years minimum time, we will be able to clean our waters. If you talk about cleaning your environment, you also have to know how to clean up your river and other bodies of water," he said. (Ellalyn de Vera)

i'm not saying this can't be done.

but if they've spent so much and accomplished so little in bringing life back to pasig river, how can it be done to a bay?! what pollutes the bay in the first place? it's the river.
