Should DUD grow then aerobridges will probably return in the future. They predict a passenger flow of about 1 million in 2015+ |

Ha ha Theville you crack me up, I don't think Dunedin locals are all that interested in hearing how 'superior' Townsville is. Love the pics btw, looks like a gorgeous city... from a surfer's perspective i'm thinking Dunedin looks a hell of a lot more attractive than shitty Townsville beaches with their complete lack of any waves above a ripple, not to mention jellyfish...

Agreed with most of what you said.I'm fairly pro-Australian cities as I think they're stunning, however, to write Dunedin off is by far the most stupid thing that Theville could do. Firstly, Dunedin has fantastic Scottish styled architecture, a really lively student base, a good pub scene and a mild climate with wonderful scenary only a few hours drive away. It is pretty much a gateway to antartica too with a fantastic albatross colony not too far away from it. Townsville on the other hand lacks heritage, has a climate that many would find rather oppressive (not me but I like the heat), and not much of a student vibe compared to Dunedin. Boasting about the number of domestic flights to an airport when the country is as low density and spread out as Australia is, is not really fair. Dunedin is a DRIVE from the south islands biggest city, Townsville on the other hand is hardly drivable from even Brisbane unless you really like long distance, so of course there will be more domestic travel. If you look at Europe, comparitively the domestic flights will be very low compared to Australia and why? DENSITY and rail travel. This doesn't mean that their airports are any less functional or important. If anything, I think it's far more impressive for an airport to recieve international visitors than domestic as it shows that the city the airport is attached to actually warrents international visitors. Don't spam the Dunedin thread simply to rant about how well Townsville is doing. I know that QLD is currently doing very well economically and migration wise, however, this isn't the be all and end all of making a good city. |

sorry about this guy everyone. Seems he creates havoc wherever he turns up. I think he's been kicked off now though - he's just gone spooky quiet. Anyway, Dunedin looks great. I'll be heading down that way for some holidays in dec - any recommendations from some locals would be cool. Is Oamaru worth a visit? |

Great panos there Spotz
I really need to go and visit Dunedin me thinks. I can't believe I haven't been there yet. Well, it is at the other end of the country to me, but still, I am a seasoned domestic traveller.
