I'm loving this deluge of photos from Dunedin! I should ask my other half very kindly whether or not I can borrow her recent shots of the city to put up here...

Dunedin looks pretty nice, used to be the largest in the country before like 100 years ago I think.

Indeed. Dunedin was NZ's largest city untill the end of the 19th century. Dunedin's prosperity at the time was due to the gold rush in Central Otago. As a result Dunedin opened NZ's first University and stock exchange aswell as having NZ's first cable cars and trams.
Dunedin's population reached a peak in the early 1960's and has remained more or less stagnant since (with the exception of an ever increasing student population)

I will definitely go to Dunedin next year on my NZ trip.Unfortunately, I may only spend one night there. What kind of places could I cover in one day?I would love taking scenic pics of the city and pics of the city from an observation hill. Hope this post is not considered a spam.

It depends on whether you want wildlife or culture:
For wildlife, you could do the Otago Peninsula in one day taking in the Royal Albatross Colony, Penguin Place (Yellow Eyed Penguin colony), Larnach Castle. Assuming you have a rental car take the coastal peninsula road one part of the trip and the hilly road on the other.
For culture, visit Dunedin Public Art Gallery, Otago Museum, Otago Settlers Museum, check out some of the stunning architecture such as the Railway Station, First Church, Olveston, University Registry and the new Chinese Garden.
Other standard tourist options include the tours of Speights Brewery and Cadbury's chocolate factory, walking up Baldwin Street (world's steepest street).
Being hilly there are plenty of options for panaromic city shots. There is a proper viewing area at the top of Signal Hill, which provides a great outlook of the city. If you can brave a worse road Mt Cargill provides an even more sweeping view of the city. Other options might include city views from Roslyn or Waverley.
The Dunedin City Council website has a link to the local i-site, www.dunedin.govt.nz

Ok not photos but a 7 min promotional video of Dunedin city and surrounds apparently sanctioned by the DCC for immigration advertising. Looks to be about three or four years old. Some beautiful shots ...

Thanks Scafie...

You can't deny it - Dunedin is one BEAUTIFUL city set in a very BEAUTIFUL setting.

With all the little developments and the BIG ones in the planning, building or pipeline - I'm sure our great 4th city will go from strength to strenght.

think that it is the science building at the uni or somewhere around the science building. Hilton (Old post office) is to the right of the photo.

I love Dunedin, agree such a beautiful city!!
I usually spend most of my time photographing the coastline and waves/surfing here, but manage to get some city shots too.
