I probably shouldnt be talking about this subject, but I must admit the introduction of a dry zone in Adl City, has seen a huge drop in drunken groups abusing people (for no reason) over the last 4 years, in the squares.
Look Im not trying to be nasty, I know its the minority who ruin it for the aborginal reputation, and the major cause is alcohol abuse. We are a wealthy nation, and much more needs to be spent on curbing alcohol related violence by a group of people that are simply lost in a society that was forced on them. Aussie Rules football is about the only thing that connects aboriginals to non-aborginals, and this needs to be further worked on. But really, no ones knows the answer
What's the 'dry zone'? I'm guessing it's an area where alcohol can't be sold/drunk? Or is it just a place where no public drinking is allowed?

That's a pretty drastic law to implement. Over here the government introduced a curfew that meant anyone under 18 wasn't allowed in Northbridge (the main clubbing area) after 10pm if they didn't have a parent or guardian with them. This rule basically only applied to young aboriginals, as they were the only unsupervised youth there.

They also bought in a 'move along' law, where police could ask anyone to move, even if there was no real reason. It gave police the power to move Aboriginals from parks and streets.

Of course, there was a big up roar about it being racist. I'm not entirely sure they aren't.

Further disruption to train services

Further disruption to train services
October 10, 2007 03:00pm
------------------------

TRANSPERTH train services will be disrupted tomorrow when railcar-driver members of the ARTBIU attend an authorised stopwork meeting in Perth.

The disruption will not affect peak services and will be covered by replacement buses.

The meeting of ARTBIU (Australian Rail, Tram and Bus Industry Union), to discuss the EBA bargaining schedule, will run from 11am to 1pm.

Train services on the Armadale, Thornlie and Midland lines will be affected from about 10am until 2.30pm, allowing time for the drivers to travel to and from the meeting.

The Joondalup Line will be affected from about 9am until 3.30pm – a bigger travel-time allowance is needed because the line is closed from Leederville to Perth this week in the Shutdown to link the northern and southern lines.

The Fremantle Line, which is closed altogether because of the Shutdown, is unaffected because it is already fully operated by replacement buses.

Public Transport Authority CEO Reece Waldock today paid tribute to the outstanding support of the bus drivers employed by Transperth’s three main contractors, who had agreed to step into the breach.

“These drivers are already working overtime to help us cover the loss of train services due to the shutdown and have agreed to take on an even greater load during tomorrow’s meeting,” Mr Waldock said.

City-thing, yes the dry-zone means a ban on the consumption of alcohol in public places. The entire City of Adl is a dry zone. Its been amazingly successful. Up until 5 years ago, very few people would walk through the middle of Victoria Sq because you were guaranteed abuse by about 20 of them, who were blind drunk, and fighting every single day of the year. Now Vic Sq is very safe and happy, with people sitting on the grass eating lunch, and tourists watching the fountain.
Alice Springs has just introduced it, and most SA towns have it

Auckland too has vast swathes of the city with blanket bans on public alcohol consumption.

You can in Queensland. You can't drink alcohol in any public place.

Street drinking is the consumption of alcohol in a public spaces. In WA it is illegal and police are allowed to dispose (pour it on the ground) of the alcohol being consumed and can fine you up to $200. Though I don't think they would fine anyone unless the perpetrator refused to allow them to dispose of the drink.

that glass looks pretty thick, with the amount of transit and cctv i doubt itll happen, you don't see the central station vandalised so don't just assume it'll happen.
