I am hoping that Ukrainian system is enough powerful to survive in these hard times and continue with developments, even limited amount of them

What about Donbass area, is it getting much urban 2X2 routes or E50 motorway towards Luhansk (Rostov ?) will be the only main road there ?

Hi All,

I don't know how things are now as I've been away from Ukraine for nearly 3 years but the picture of the Patona Bridge in Kiev is typical of a busy rush-hour! My wife and I have an apartment in Kniazhyi Zaton, not far from the bridge and it could sometimes take over an hour to get over it!

As to other Ukrainian Roads...

I drove from London to Kiev many times and, because my car was UK registered, had to drive it out of Ukraine every six months - so I got to know the E40 very well!!

Kiev - Rivne OK - with some parts a very good standard, especially closer to Kiev.

Rivne - Lviv - a real test of endurance, stamina (and suspension!). Parts of this road were being repaired when I first drove over them - with a thin crusting of tarmac that disintegrated during the its' first winter! Later repairs seemed to last a bit longer but when I last drove over this section, the ruts and pot-holes were back in force!

The Ring Road to the West of Kiev was always an 'interesting experience'! When busy, drivers would use the Central Reservation, the pathway, or even the opposite carriageway to get to where they wanted to be. Great fun!!

When all's said and done though, I miss Kiev and can't wait to be back there again!

No, it won't be a motorway. It's just national road 'magistrale' 2X2

Future motorway E50 will be a main east west axe

I think "M" does not mean motorway. It's probably similar to Hungarian numbering where the most important roads get "M" numbers no matter whether they are motorways, expressways or 2x1 expressways.

BTW I can't wait to see how many kilometres of M roads will be finished before EURO 2012.

'M' probably stands for magistral'.

Yeah I think so. There is also a new class called N roads (H in Cyrillic).

I think so as well. Interestingly, in UK M stands just for motorway, M as a combination of national road/motorway/expressway is in Ukraine as well as Russia.

As far as I know Ukraine has;

M-roads Magistrales, most important roads, can be up to motorway specs
N-roads National, secondary network, mostly parallels the M-roads.
P-roads Regional, secondary network for rural regions and small towns.
T-roads Regional, tertairy network for local and regional importance.

M-roads have one or two digits, as do N-roads. P-roads also has one or two digits, T-roads have four digits, as in T00 00 with a space. (For instance the T18 06). As far as I know, single digit numbers are preceded by a "0". Like M05.
