At the Google map it looks like this at the border:

https://www.google.se/maps/@49.95603...0645,16z?hl=sv

But is that correct now? Or is it rebuilt so it is the motorway that is going over the border?

The satellite image reveals how its built:

The main carriageways extend directly to the Ukrainian border, seemingly built for the unlikely event Ukraine would join the Schengen area. Apparently it's mostly used as a training area for emergency services.

That was only one year ago. And the picture at the top is how it looks like today. You can see its same place.

But are they soon going to open that new road? Or why did they built it if they are not going to use it?

Don't you see that there are still no checkpoints? Or they are so naive to achieve free movement... Or...

I think they should be built soon. Here's a short article (in Polish) that I found: http://wschodnik.pl/ukraina/item/435...s-remontu.html

Interesting! Here is one more article about the same, but this one is in Ukrainian.

http://loda.gov.ua/news?id=20056

The articles are from end of January and begin of February. So I think something has happen since 1 February. Its interesting, it looks like the new checkpoint is going to be only for cars and for bus. Lorrys are going to use the old checkpoint. So they are going to separate them.

So they are going to open the new checkpoint quite soon?

last pic: We had a expressway like this in Bosnia, near Banja Luka, and it's not proved to be a good solution. Over the years there is happened a lot of traffic accidents with fatal injuries. Now, the carriageways are physically separated by New Jersey barriers and since than no dead people in traffic accidents.

It does not look as general 2+2, where you need to keep on the right.

Looks like the side lanes are for slow traffic and the middle lanes are for general traffic.

Thanks for asking Theijs. We just got back from what was a rather big road trip a couple of days ago. Essentially, the trip was:
1. Belgrade-Odessa (via the route ukraroad very helpfully suggested).
2. Odessa-Mamaia/Constanta (RO) via Chisinau to collect a friend from the airport in Chisinau.
3. Constanta-Belgrade (via Bucharest)

Belgrade-Odessa was more or less uneventful, UNTIL entering the Ukraine at the Palanca border. 2 hours waiting at the RO-MD border at Albita and some absolutely horrible Chisinau by-pass roads were a minor inconvenience (Note - if you're driving through Chisinau, just drive into the centre and out in whatever direction you need to go).

We entered Ukraine at Palanca at around midnight. As I mentioned, my choice of cars for this trip (I have 3), wasn't the best. 2010 Alfa Romeo 159 3.2 V6 4-wheel drive

The road from there to Odessa is, quite simply, the WORST road I have ever seen or driven on in my life, and I've lived in Africa and travelled extensively around South America as well. Considering how low my car is to the ground, with the lowest point being the differential drive shaft for the 4-wheel drive system, I couldn't drive any faster then 30/40km/h without risking tearing the car into 2 pieces. The fact it's better then the road from Palance to Reni really tells you something! The fact it was dark didn't help obviously. On the return trip back to Chisinau, it was daylight which helped, so I took a few pics:

The only section being re-paved, approximately near Myrne - about 2km long section.

Here's the border as you exit Ukraine and declare that you're not continuing on the M15 but rather turning north into Moldova - perhaps the most unique border configuration I've ever come across.

Here is the queue to enter Moldova from the M15 (if you're remaining on the M15 into Ukraine, you veer off to the left

Perhaps better illustrated here:

Fortunately, only one warning light came on near Cahul in Moldova just before entering Romania after hitting one hump in the road, but it turned out to be nothing upon closer inspection back here in Belgrade at the Alfa Romeo garage. Minor miracle the car survived these roads!

Next time, I'm flying to Odessa

(PS - Apologies for small image size, had a lot of trouble uploading these somewhere that I could link to this site - if anyone has any advice on how to do this, please PM me)

Well, M15 is yet the worst-quality M-road in Ukraine, especially Tatarbunary-Izmail, but H11(whole length) is just a horror film to M15.
The govts allocated 1.1 bln hryvnia(45$ mln) onto reconstruction of M15.
And, Groysman said yesterday that(attention!) by spending 1.19 bln hryvnias($49 mln) the Ukravtodor liquidated humps on 60% of all M, H, H and T roads(not repaved!). Sounds pretty weird, because there were a lot of humps and there is 170000 km of such roads.
So on 1 km of repairs they spent 11226 hryvnias(450$) per kilometer. It's super-budget!

Robertkc, izvinite, there was no other good road. You know, in Chisinau some people lit candles on the roadholes, filled with sand. I think we soon would do the same(якщо в лісі щось велике не здохне).

Hi Robert, Thank you for sharing your experience. I was wondering: shall I take a (mini)bus Chisinau-Palanca-Odessa, or make it by bus or train via Tiraspol mid-October...

Unless someone knows that some bad sections of the M15 will improve this summer, I might better opt for a transit via Transdjinstria.

Govts say the M15 will be ready by late autumn, if everything goes fine, of course.
About trains: there is one through Tiraspol from Odessa. It goes 5h 13 mins. Here you are. Prepare your passport!

ukraroad - no apology needed. In fact, a huge thanks because I know you recommended the only reasonable way to go, and the best out of a bad choice

I really can't comment on the train option to be honest. A mini-bus or bus would probably be ok on the M15 section from Palanca to Odessa as the ground clearance is sufficiently high (unlike my car!)
