Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Minister for Livestock, Hidayatullah Khan, on Thursday, said issues faced by residents of Swabi would be addressed through various development projects to be initiated at a cost of Rs10 million.

Addressing a public gathering at ANP district office in Swabi, he said that the projects include setting up of a veterinary hospital and upgradation of schools in PK-34. The law and order situation has improved in K-P and measures are being taken to ensure permanent peace and writ of the government, he added.

He asked party workers to come forward to resolve peoples’ problems and help the government address their grievance.

MANSEHRA: Syed Qasim Shah, special advisor to Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani on Saturday said the New Balakot City would now cost Rs14.2 billion against the earlier estimate of Rs12 billion owing to delay in launching the project.

Talking to reporters here on Saturday, he said: “The government had got $6.5 billion from the international community by showing pictures of corpses and the flattened houses in Balakot, but it is a pity that the survivors have been living a miserable life in small shelters for the last seven years.”

He said the completion of the New Balakot City, which could address 70 percent miseries of the people of Balakot, was nowhere in sight.

“I don’t know who is wrong and who is right but I do know the cost of project has risen to Rs14.2 billion, which was earlier Rs12 billion because of the inordinate delay in the completion of development work,” he added.

Qasim Shah said that like Balakot, Muzaffarabad, the capital of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, was also declared “red zone” by a team of international geologists and seismologists.

He said that universities, colleges and buildings had been reconstructed in Muzaffarabad but the people of Balakot were deprived of even basic health services.

“The people of Balakot are deprived of health and education facilities just because the city was declared part of the “red zone” and due to relocation of old Balakot to the New Balakot City but even after the lapse of seven years the people couldn’t be relocated at the new city and are still living a miserable life in small makeshift houses,” Qasim Shah said.

Sheikh Khalifa Bridge opens in Pakistan May 27, 2012

ABU DHABI: UAE Ambassador to Pakistan Essa Abdullah Al Pasha Al Noeemi inaugurated on Friday the $12.6 million Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Bridge over the Swat River in Pakistan which would greatly help in the development of the area.

The inaugural ceremony was held in the presence of General Ashfaq Kayani, Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, Abdullah Khalifa Al Ghafli, director of the Emirati Project to Assist Pakistan, and a number of senior Pakistani officials.

Al Noeemi emphasised that human dimension is an essential component in the foreign policy of the UAE.

He said that the completion of Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Bridge, funded by Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan for Humanitarian Works, would fulfil the needs of the people of area.

Reduced distance

The bridge will contribute to reaching other areas in a short period of time, pushing the wheel of economic development and improving living standards across the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

“The achievement of the UAE project to help Pakistan is a result of continuous efforts and co-ordination between the Pakistani government authorities, civilians and the project management.” Al Ghafli said in a speech that the opening of the bridge on the Swat River is the translation of the generous initiatives and instructions by the UAE leadership to support developmental assistance to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

The bridge is one of the most important and essential bridges in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

It is also regarded as one of the main crossing points for the people of the area and a central connection to the main road in the province.

The bridge would serve a population of around 70,000.

Its length is 330 metres with a height of six metres and the capacity is more than 5,000 vehicles per daily.

All the materials of the bridge were made in the UK and it has special technical and engineering specifications, which were applied during the construction process and according to international standards.

It is resistant to earthquakes and floods. Along the walls of the bridge there is a block resisting a water length of up to 900 metres.

The concrete used in the bridge is resistant to erosion, corrosion and humidity. The lighting system is operated by solar energy.
