World's First Remote Controlled Bat Watching System Launched In Mulu

MULU, April 21 (Bernama) -- Prince Albert II of Monaco launched the world's first digital remote-controlled bats monitoring system at Deer Cave, one of the many caves within the national park here Sunday.

The RM800,000 system, also known as the Mulu BatCam, was another innovative ecotourism development implemented by the state government that utilised five remote controlled television cameras and infra-red lighting inside the cave to show spectacular details of the bat colonies there, said the park's manager, Brian Clark.

Speaking to reporters after the launching ceremony, he said the system, which was developed by an Australian company, enabled visitors to observe the bats regardless of the weather conditions.

He said the project was expected to spur greater interest to visit the cave, particularly among researchers from overseas to study the bats species there and eventually contributing towards fauna conservation.

The Deer Cave has the largest cave passage in the world and is the only known place in the world to have 12 different species of bats.

Meanwhile, Albert II said the project was one of the many evidences of the Malaysian government's efforts to promote and conserve its rich biodiversity.

He added that the project could serve as a scientific and educational tool to educate visitors who came to the park, declared a world's heritage by the United Nations Education, Science and Culture Organisation (Unesco) in 2000.

Albert II's visit here was part of his three-day official tour of Sarawak that started last Saturday in Kuching.

He left for Miri today en route to Singapore where he is scheduled to receive the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)'s Champions of the Earth prize in a special ceremony Tuesday.

Champions of the Earth is an international environment award established in 2004 and since then has been presented each year by UNEP to seven outstanding environmental leaders.
