Northrail construction 'accelerated'

CLARK FREEPORT -- North Luzon Railways Corporation (Northrail) chairman Edgardo Pamintuan said the massive construction work on the 82-kilometer Northrail Railway Project is now accelerating at a steady pace following the resumption of work in early this month.

Pamintuan reported to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo during the Cabinet meeting here on Tuesday that "every aspect, which would contribute to faster construction work, will be explored and employed to cover for the delay of project, which now runs to five years."

He said 10 board piles have already been built and faster build-up is expected as work accelerates. The NorthRail Engineering Team, he said, had accomplished 38.95 percent of the needed embankments, which was all classified as Good for Construction (GFC).

Others are medium and minor bridges, framed bridges, passenger tunnel and stations which total 0.58 percent were also constructed, according to Pamintuan.

"One of the measures adopted for faster project completion is the hiring of more Filipino subcontractors," he said.

Moreover, personnel of Sinomach, the project contractor formerly known as China National Machinery and Equipment Corporation, has expressed willingness to join their Filipino counterparts to work on a 24/7 basis.

"We have been prodding the Chinese and Filipino contractors to work harder because our countrymen, especially those residing in Central and Northern Luzon, have already waited too long to enjoy the comfort and benefits of a world class railway system," Pamintuan said.

He added that Northrail's engineering, executive, and administrative and support staff are now reporting to an office closer to the project site for better and faster coordination and improved work efficiency.

"Transferring our offices to Guiguinto, Bulacan may appear as a small matter but it represents part of Northrail mission: to disperse the working and student population of Metro Manila to decongest the metropolis and usher growth and development in the countryside," he said, adding: "We now only maintain a satellite office in Manila with skeletal personnel."

Pamintuan explained that problems about design and other engineering details, which contributed to project's delay, have already been threshed out following "harmonization workshop conducted among a group of Filipino engineers and their Chinese counterparts during a three-week session in Tanjin, China last December."

The five-year delay was also caused by right-of-way disputes and "the sustained effort by some individuals to derail the project through a systematic disinformation campaign," Pamintuan said.

I've seen renders of the LRT-2 and the PNR DMU and they ended up getting these models. I'm sure it will be the same for Northrail

it will not, initially.. electrification will be the planned next once the operation beings; have to settle with DMU's for now...

Good to see the Philippines rebuild its rail system. It will benefit the country, the environment, and give me a reason to visit as a railfan. Some of the pictures of the old, run-down stock are heartbreaking. Kudos to the government for actually building something- in my native California, we just bicker among ourselves trying to build a high speed rail line, I wonder if it will ever actually get built before I die...

Thanks...it's really encouraging that this current gov't is pro-railways including MRT/LRT....

If I heard it right, it might be similar. Unless what I really heard was the PNR clearing train that came after it.
