The inaugural run of the "Bicol Express" was conducted yesterday, reviving the 400+km rail line after more than 5 years of suspended operations due to typhoons that destroyed major sections of the line... the service uses sleeper coaches donated by Japan...

Bicol Express now runs daily
Quote:
MANILA, Philippines - Here’s good news for Bicolanos and tourists planning to visit Naga City to celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Penafrancia this month.

The Philippine National Railways (PNR) announced that it has resumed its operations and now offers daily trips at special fares from Manila to Naga and vice versa as part of the celebration. The feast of Penafrancia has become a yearly tourist attraction in the Bicol region.

PNR general manager Junio Ragragio Jr., said the Bicol Express resumed its Manila-Naga City operation since early last week. “The temporary halting of operation during the month of August was in part to prepare the PNR to ensure that our commuters who wish to travel to Naga City to celebrate the feast of Penafrancia can avail of our train services,” he explained.

This system is still a far cry from Thailand's and Malaysia's railway networks.

DOTC Mar Roxas NorthRail

http://dotc.gov.ph/index.php?option=...atic&Itemid=55

Latest update from DOTC website, Mar Roxas. Based on this article my estimate is re-start of construction first half of 2013, if we're lucky.

But at least there is still hope because it is a priority project of PNoy.
