HYDERABAD, APRIL 22:
The Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Hyderabad has been adjudged India's third best airport this year by airline customers at the Skytrax World Airport Awards held in Vienna.

The World Airport Awards are given in recognition of quality for airports across the world, based on the annual Skytrax airport passenger satisfaction survey, covering 388 airports from over 160 countries.

The airport customer survey measures satisfaction across a range of 39 services and products such as airport accessibility, public transportation facilities, availability of luggage trolleys, terminal comfort, ambience and seating facilities.

Mr Vikram Jaisinghani, CEO, RGIA, said, “An airport's foremost responsibility is to improve facilities for passengers and offer them a convenient and comfortable transit.”

Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), which is also operated by the GMR Group, has won twin accolades by Skytrax as the world's most improved airport and number one airport in India.

The Hyderabad airport was commissioned in March 2008, with an initial capacity of 12 million passengers a year and 150,000 tonnes of cargo handling capacity a year. The Project has the flexibility to increase capacity to accommodate over 40 million passengers a year and will be developed in a phased manner.

HYDERABAD, APRIL 23:
Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) has contributed 0.45 per cent to the Gross Domestic Product of India and 13.53 per cent to Delhi's Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) in 2009-10.

A study by the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), concluded recently, the airport, run by GMR group, directly contributed Rs 4,200 crore through air transport and airport services, Rs 7,700 crore indirectly through supply chain.

“The induced impact through tourism and investment resulted in a gain of Rs 17,400 crore,” Mr P.S. Nair, Chief Executive Officer (Corporate-Airport Sector) of GMR group, said.

Mr Nair told Business Line that the Council had recently concluded the study commissioned by the group to assess the impact of aviation activity in Delhi on national economy.

“A similar study on impact of Hyderabad airport too is on the anvil,” he said.

By 2020, the overall economic impact of Delhi airport is pegged at Rs 90,900 crore, forming 0.7 per cent of the national GDP and 22.2 per cent of Delhi GSDP.

During the construction phase, it contributed Rs 6,800 crore, or 0.10 per cent to GDP and 3.13 per cent to Delhi's GSDP. It created 64,000 jobs and 4.52 lakh jobs through supply chain activity, Mr Nair added.

“Results shows how aviation sector plays the role of a catalyst in national economy,” he said.

Cargo volumes projected to grow 10%

HYDERABAD, APRIL 25:
The Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad is expecting a flat growth in passenger flow to the airport this fiscal, especially on the domestic front. The airport, run by the GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd (GHIAL), may not see growth in domestic passenger traffic, given the challenges being faced by the Indian carriers. On the other hand, it expects some increase in the flow of international passengers this year.

INCREASED TRAFFIC

The airport ended 2011-12 with a passenger traffic flow of 8.6 million, up about 16 per cent from last year's traffic of 7.63 million. While domestic passengers increased from 5.7 million to 6.7 million, international passenger traffic was almost flat, at 1.9 million.

Airport authorities believe that, this fiscal, it will be the other way round. While international footfalls will increase, there will be a smaller number of domestic passengers flying out from the airport. The airport has the advantage of being well-connected to 15 international and 30 domestic destinations. Figures show that air traffic movement has increased from 83,292 to 99,658 last fiscal, with 11 foreign and six domestic passenger airlines flying to 45 destinations.

FLAT CARGO GROWTH

On the cargo front, the growth was flat, with the airport projecting a higher growth of 10 per cent for the current fiscal.

It handled 81,475 tonnes of cargo last fiscal, as against 80,777 tonnes and 66,480 tonnes in previous two years.

“We are developing an additional 250 acres as an integrated logistics park with multi-modal connectivity and supply-chain integration,” Mr P.S. Nair, CEO-Corporate, Airport Sector, GMR Group, said during a recent presentation at the Project Management Institute in Hyderabad.

Cathay Pacific to expand cargo service to India
HONG KONG -(MarketWatch)- Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd. plans to expand its air cargo services to India by launching a twice-weekly freighter service to Hyderabad and adding a third weekly freighter flight to Bengaluru, both from May 17, the Hong Kong-based carrier said Tuesday.

The plan will give shippers more choice and flexibility in connecting to the airline's international cargo network through the Hong Kong hub, the blue-chip carrier said in a statement.

"Hyderabad is one of the major hubs for the manufacturing of pharmaceuticals in India, accounting for around one-third of the country's drug production," said Cathay Pacific Director Cargo Nick Rhodes.

The Hyderabad service will operate on a Hong Kong-Delhi-Bengaluru-Hyderabad-Hong Kong routing on Thursdays and a Hong Kong-Chennai-Hyderabad-Hong Kong routing on Sundays, it said.

The third weekly flight to Bengaluru will operate via Mumbai on Saturdays, in addition to the current flights every Monday and Thursday.

Besides luxury malls and international airports, Montblanc is looking at high street locations to expand its retail presence in India. The company feels its presence in India is small at present compared to its market potential.

“Apart from entering new cities such as Kolkata, we are planning to open more stores in cities where we are already present. The prime focus of my visit to India is to explore and look for suitable locations. As we don’t have enough boutiques, we are not sufficiently tapping the potential here,” Montblanc president-western hemisphere Karl Handke told Financial Chronicle,

Besides a network of jewellery shops and pen stores, Montblanc has 15 exclusive boutiques in India. “We don’t have a specific number in mind for the outlets we are going to open, but we are definitely looking at every luxury mall that is opening here,” Handke added.

The firm will soon open its exclusive store at the Hyderabad airport and is also looking at Delhi and Mumbai airports for such exclusive outlets. Montblanc already has a duty-free store at the Delhi airport.

In India, boutiques of luxury brands came into being 15-20 years ago. Since then, their presence has largely been limited to five star hotels, that too, at select locations. “Today our presence is very much focused on malls and hotels as 10-20 years back, these were the places where luxury shopping used to happen. But now we are also looking at high streets for our expansion,” he said.

According to Handke, even though the Indian luxury market is growing faster than Europe’s, the duties here are taking a heavy toll on the company’s sales.

The brand launched its Grace De Monaco collection in India on Tuesday. The collection includes limited-edition jewellery, writing instruments and timepieces for women.

Cathay Pacific launches freighter service from Hyderabad
Quote:

The Cathay Pacific Director - Cargo, Mr Nick Rhodes, addressing a meet in Hyderabad on Thursday.
Hyderabad May 17:

Cathay Pacific on Thursday commenced its new freighter service from Hyderabad, connecting the city to 44 destinations world wide through Hong Kong.

The service will initially be twice a week. It will operate on a Hong Kong-Delhi-Bangalore- Hyderabad- Hong Kong route every Thursday and a Hong Kong-Chennai-Hyderabad- Hong Kong every Sunday.

This is the airline's fifth air cargo port in India, after it connected Bangalore last month and before that Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai.

The airline sees India as a potential cargo hub in this part of the world after China, as it evaluates other potential domestic airports that could be linked to its global network.

Mr Nick Rhodes, Cathay Pacific Director (Cargo), said the airline's revenues from cargo operations in India contributed to 28 per cent of its total revenues from the country.

“We see India as an emerging cargo market. To start with, we are increasing the frequency of our Bangalore service to thrice a week from next week,” he told media persons here.

Globally, the airline carries about 1.2 million tonnes of cargo annually, with the throughput from India being about 54,000 tonnes (only export cargo). It has a fleet of 25 Boeing 747 freighters.

“We are adding five 747-8s to our global fleet, the first of which will be delivered in July this year. While another two will be delivered later this year, the other two will join our fleet next year,” Mr Rhodes said.

He said the airline was evaluating new air cargo routes from India, with Ahmedabad being next on its radar.

The Hyderabad service is expected to help export of pharma products from here, as it connects the Hong Kong hub, where the airline is developing its own terminal at a cost of $ 750 million.

The Hyderabad international airport has a modular integrated cargo facility designed to handle 1.5 lakh tonnes of cargo annually, apart from India's only dedicated pharmaceutical handling facility that offers ‘truck-dock to airside temperature controlled environment' for handling these products.

HYDERABAD: The GMR Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) is fast becoming a high-street shopping arcade. Expanding its already sprawling retail zone by another 150%, the airport has now made way for close to a dozen top-notch retail brands, both from the city and outside. An additional 5,000 square feet (sft) has been earmarked to house multi-cuisine restaurants apart from fast food joints. From books and stationery chains to apparel and jewellery outlets, the airport has roped in a range of stores to enhance its commercial space.

GMR officials believe that the retail focus will improve the profitability of Shamshabad airport. In fact, over the next few months as many as 22 retail outlets and gaming and entertainment zones will be accommodated in the domestic terminal. "While the first and major phase of the (retail) project has been rolled out in May this year, the second phase will be completed by September. The last phasewill be over by the year end," an official spokesperson of RGIA said.

In the last few months, roughly six new brands have made a smooth landing at the Hyderabad airport. These include city-based Karachi Bakery, WH Smith Bookshop, boutique jewellery group Krishna Pearls and Jewellers, eatery chain Taste of India, handicrafts store 'Anuva' and Hyderabadi Bangles. Also in the transit are luxury brands such as Mont Blanc and Swarovski and food chains KFC and Barista.

Apart from the new entrants, existing retailers are expanding business in the airport. Shoppers Stop for instance, has expanded its retail space from 3,200 sft to 6,200 sft now. Similarly, Crossword has gone from occupying just about 700 sft to 1,500 sft.

Explaining the economics of this retail overdrive, a source in the know of things said, "The passenger traffic at the airport has not improved as per expectations. While it was believed that the footfall would cross the 7 million mark in the first two years of operation and hit a double-digit growth soon after, it has barely touched 8 million in four years. The increased emphasis on retail is to bridge this revenue gap."

Also, keeping in line with the model followed by most international airports, RGIA is striving towards a 60:40 design (60% revenue from non-aero operations and 40% from aero operations), the source added. Currently, the ratio at the city airport is 40:60.

That perhaps explains the steep rentals within the airport premises. Rough estimates suggest that commercial space here is nearly four to five times higher than that prevailing within the city. While a leased area within Hyderabad works out to about Rs 100 (that too areas such as Jubilee or Banjara Hills) per sft, retailers setting shop within the airport terminal pay nothing less than Rs 400-500 per sft, sources say. To top it, they add, that the initial deposit also is as much as Rs 10-15 lakh, at least twice the rate prevalent in the city. "Further, as RGIA follows a revenue sharing model, about 12-16% of the sales go to the airport's coffers," said a leading retailer from the city.

RGIA officials, however, maintain that the new retail project is not aimed at improving revenues alone but also for enhancing passenger facilities.

Cavotec will modernize four remote cargo aircraft stands at Rajiv Gandhi Hyderabad International Airport

The Cavotec global engineering group will expand the airport’s cargo apron and modernize four remote cargo aircraft stands at Rajiv Gandhi Hyderabad International Airport.

The group will deliver, install and commission 180kVA 400Hz electrical power converters, 400Hz hatch pits from Cavotec Fladung, and supply 50Hz and 400 Hz cables. This is the very first time that Cavotec will supply aircraft electrical converter systems to the Indian market.

Both the projects at Hyderabad Airport are scheduled for commissioning in October this year. This is the latest phase of the airport’s extensive modernization program that will see another 12 positions delivered in 2013.

“This is our first order in India not only for Cavotec INET converter systems, but also for Cavotec Fladung pit units. We anticipate further opportunities for similar orders as this sector resumes an upswing in activity,” explains Nicklas Pihl, Managing Director Cavotec India.

The most recent figures published by Hyderabad International show that the airport handled some 76 million passengers between April 2010 and March 2011, making it India’s sixth busiest airport.

In other news, the group won a major order for advanced ground support equipment at Memphis International Airport.

Cavotec is to supply fuel hydrant pits, vault access covers and valve isolation chambers for aircraft stands at Memphis Airport. The project is divided into five separate phases, and Cavotec will deliver its element of the order throughout the year.

“We’re delighted to have delivered the winning proposal for the Memphis project. We look forward to continue working with our valued partners on these and other projects going forward,” says Gary Matthews, President Cavotec Dabico US Inc.

These orders follow several recent projects for Cavotec at airports in Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Cavotec ground support equipment has already served airports in India for a number of years. For example, Cavotec fuel hydrant pit systems are installed at Mumbai’s Chhantrapati Shivaji International Airport, and the Group is due to install additional units of this type at the airport.

Cavotec’s airports offering was significantly strengthened by last year’s acquisition of US ground support equipment manufacturer, INET. In addition to Cavotec INET, the Group’s Airports market unit includes Cavotec Fladung, Cavotec Meyerinck and Cavotec Dabico. Between them, these companies have pioneered several GSE technologies that are now in use at commercial and other applications all around the world.

Cavotec is a leading system designer and integrator for the global airports sector. Working closely with airports, airlines and industry bodies, the Group manufactures a diverse range of advanced GSE including systems for 400Hz power, pre-compressed air (PCAir), fuel and wet services, connectors, towbars, caddies and pantographs.

Will there be a new terminal built to handle the International Air traffic?

Currently the HYD Airport is a single large terminal split into Domestic and International. As the new runway is operational, are there any plans of constructing a new terminal for the international passengers.

I strongly believe, that an expansion is required as early as possible before they run out of time and end up doing catching up job!

Also, I continously keep shuttling between Bangalore and Hyderabad twice a month! But trust me, Bangalore airport is in a pretty bad shape when it comes to maintenance and is always over crowded! To top this nonsense, they have so many birds littering the food courts and passengers who have their food have always had a nightmare with this!

I hope, this is the right chance for HYD to start increasing its ground space...
Is there anyone who is with me here?

Ummm Hyderabad has a built up capacity for 12 million pax and the current number is hanging around 8.5 mil. I think they will start thing abt it when it reaches 10 to 11 mil level. Even then I think they will first try to expand the current terminal to 15 mil level (There is scope for that) and then think of a new terminal. Also the Telangana issue and eventual slowdown in Hyderabad business growth has slowed down the traffic growth.

I don't know if this has been posted before but makemytrip.com is offering cash back offers on air tickets(International and Domestic) that are booked via Hyderabad from April 12th. I guess its an extension of "GMR's Fly via Hyderabad" program that was previously being given to travel agents before.. I don't know if other websites are giving the same discounts..

Applicable for tickets booked to/from Ahmedabad, Bhubaneswar, Indore, Mangalore,Bhopal, Goa, Raipur, Cochin, Nagpur, Coimbatore, Pune, Trivandrum, Aurangabad and Madurai.
