It is the Outer Ring Road that has taken off. total distance of the ORR: 168 km.

the plan is to build this road so that is surrounds the entire city and connects to the interiors of the city through other interconnecting roads. a project that has been undertaken to improve the city's infrastructure, simply.

I have this persistent feeling that Hyderabad will get its airport before Bangalore. I don't know what it is, but the dynamics of this city tell me so.

L&T bags Rs 263 cr Hyderabad terminal project

http://www.business-standard.com/com...&autono=207254

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has won an additional order of Rs 263 crore for the construction of a passenger terminal building at the proposed Hyderabad International Airport.

The order, received from China State Construction Engineering (Hong Kong) Ltd — main contractors for a part of the airport project package — follows the Rs 495 crore order received by the company from Hyderabad International Airport Ltd (HIAL) in August for the construction of the runway and taxiway.

The new airport, to be located at Shamshabad, is promoted by the HIAL, a partnership initiative between the GMR Group, the government of Andhra Pradesh and Airports Authority of India (AAI).

The new terminal building, spread across 11.5 lakh square feet, is being built to handle an estimated 5 million passengers a year, and will conform to the standards at major global airports.

Twin wings of the central building will handle international and domestic traffic, while transparent glazing all around the building will provide an aesthetic sheen to the entire structure.

Other high tech construction features include insulated metal profiled curved roofing supported over structural steel truss, and tensile fabric roofing membrane covering 75,000 sq feet of the canopied hall.

Unhappy

29A.......................This is NOT New Hyd. Airport model images. Its actually new Dubai Airport model. I and other have already posted these images long long time ago. For some reason, there is some huge misunderstanding on the net. They are posting Dubai Airport rederings as Hyd. Airport. It has already been clearified by Dubai forumers here.

Hyderabad’s new airport will be bang on target

Extract from Deccan Herald

Quote:
Airport architecture may be an issue of debate in this part of the country but for the upcoming international airport in Hyderabad, the future comes by design, literally.

The Rs 5,500-crore greenfield airport in Shamshabad, about 20 km from Hyderabad, is getting set for an early 2008 opening and the promoters are swearing by the airport’s look. Airport architecture is almost as, if not equally, important as the services offered. This aspect has been well addressed in the Hyderabad airport, says Mr Bruce Benjamin, Head Project Management, Hyderabad International Airport Limited (HIAL).

On the sidelines of Aerodrome India 2005 on Thursday, Mr Benjamin agrees that the eventual functionality of the airport is of great importance too, but reiterates how the overall look projects the airport as one with global standards. If you look at international trends, the design factor is getting a lot of focus. The ‘dressing up’ part is indeed an important aspect in building airports, he says.

The Hyderabad Airport will start with an increased passenger capacity of seven million per year (the initial estimate was of five million). The number of check-in counters will be increased to meet the requirement.

Connecting links

Mr Benjamin is also expecting good connectivity to Hyderabad city to be in place by the time the airport gets operational. We are working with the Andhra Pradesh Government on linking the access roads to NH7. There are plans for an elevated road from the centre of Hyderabad to the airport. Rail connectivity is also on the agenda, but roads are what we are looking at right now, he says. HIAL is promoted by the GMR group and has an estimated budget of Rs 1,760 crore.

SELLING THE EXPERIENCE

Mr Benjamin, head, project management, HIAL, says, it has become important to address airports as commercial undertakings in the modern context. Airports are no longer about just a mode of transport. It’s important to involve the private sector, bring in more commercial focus and create a better environment for business opportunities, he says and points at the Hong Kong International Airport as a successful model on this count.

This trend will soon prevail in India too. The future of airports depends on how they create the infrastructure, offer services and ultimately, deliver an overall experience, he adds. He is also hopeful of collaborations with Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) in terms of implementation of facilities.

Expressway from City to new airport

Looks like the state govt is desperate to kick off this project, but does not look like sufficient planning has been done. I hear various proposals in the last two weeks. For me, this project is in still talks phase.

1. First HUDA was supposed to auction the lands around the highway to raise money
2. Second they said they will not auction but take loans from the banks.

3. Now it looks like they are inclined to hand over the adjacent land to the expressway builder.

I just hope the project takes off and does not get into litigations..

ORR for early finisher: CM

Hyderabad, Dec. 28: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy on Wednesday said that the Rs 4,000-crore Outer Ring Poject would be offered to any reputed Indian or foreign agency that promises to complete it early. The Chief Minister met a six-member Japanese delegation from the Pacific Consultant International (Asia Partnership Fund), a major international developer, which made a technical presentation on the project.

The Chief Minister made it clear that the government wants the 21.9-km ORR phase-1 project from Gachibowli to the upcoming Shamshabad airport to be completed within 24 months and the 138.1-km Phase-II by June 2008. He asked the Japanese delegation to submit a detailed project report by end-January.

Earlier, Huda had proposed to sell land to raise money for the project but abandoned it following opposition from its officers and employees. Subsequently, it planned to take loans but withdrew that proposal as well. Now, Huda will offer its land to the agency building the ORR to develop. Huda owns 4,000 acres in and around the proposed ORR corridor. Explaining how it works, Huda vice-chairman Jayesh Ranjan told this newspaper that the developer selected for the project will need to invest the money.

We will offer Huda or government lands to the agency for cluster development and establishment of knowledge corridor. It can develop townships, commercial complexes, IT parks, or any other development on the land. This will ensure that the executing agency will get its money, he said.
The other day, i saw a telugu TV channel report which says "The local politicians along with local officials possess land near the highway and desperately want to change the intersection of the International Airport and Bangalore higway, as they get to lose the land to the govt at nominal rates. The intersection per the plan was to be built near the 18.1KM milestone. As they cannot alter the ORR plan, they thought of a novel way to achieve it. They displaced all the milestones(KM marked indicators) by a certain distance so that the intersection is not built in their lands".

The unthinkable, unimaginable etc can happen only in India, most of them not on the positive side !

Part of the new series called 'Future Republic' in the Indian Express. Do visit the site and check out the great projects all over the nation and the great men and women working on them.

Dream Hyderabad airport takes wings

Quote:
HYDERABAD, R-DAY EVE:At Shamshabad, 20 km from the city, India’s first truly international airport is taking wings, two years from landing. Yesterday was an unexpected break from work for some 2,000 workers building Hyderabad’s GMR International Airport over 5,500 acres.

A worker had been electrocuted early morning and one of the three main contractors implementing the Rs 1385-crore project had imposed safety restrictions at the Air Side and Land Side (ALS) work site.

Aware that a co-worker’s death had briefly halted work—they normally do eight-hour shifts for average wages of Rs 112 a day—they cast aside their safety helmets and relaxed.

“This is one of the biggest projects we have worked on. It involves laying 40,000 square feet of false ceiling. Ever since we left home three years ago, we have been travelling across the country. We came here some 10 days back,’’ says Manish Kumar, a 21-year-old from Muzaffarpur in Bihar, one of the two sub-contractors supplying labour for false ceiling work at the airport project site.

Manish has supplied nearly 25 hands, all from Muzaffarpur, aged between 18 and 25, for the airport project. Before he landed here, his labour force had been working at Cyberabad’s Hi-Tec City.

“We are being paid per square feet of false ceiling. It is decent money. We save most of it to take back home. Our food expenses are taken care of when there is work at large projects like this,’’ says Kishan, one from Manish Kumar’s labour force.

“We are brought in by 9 pm. Once work starts, it will stop only for lunch. The same pace is maintained after lunch. We are taken back by 6 pm,’’ says K Veeranna, a construction worker and painter from Mahboobnagar in Andhra Pradesh. He’s on a year’s contract to work at the site.

“Today I went out to meet my family after a long time because my son called me on my mobile. I also had a small drink on the way back because once work starts, we will not be allowed to go out for another 10 days at least,’’ says Anil Kumar, an “air-con” worker and daily wager from neighbouring Shahpur.

Work is still in the very early stages at the site. The first concrete pour for the passenger terminal building, being built by China State Construction Engineering (Hong Kong) Co Ltd, happened on October 10 last year.

The passenger terminal building is being built at a cost of Rs 615 crore and is spread over one-lakh square metres. A Rs 45-crore airside and landside works contract is being implemented by Larsen & Toubro Ltd.

How it has taken off

• GMR International Airport to give India’s tech-centre first truly international experience
• Located at Shamshabad, expected to be ready by early 2008
• Rs 1385-crore project is spread over 5,550 acres
• Some 2,000 workers do 8-hr shifts for an average Rs 112 a day
• Project being implemented by GMR Group, Malaysia Airports Holding Berhad, Andhra government, Airports Authority of India
• Passenger terminal building being built by China State Construction Engineering (Hong Kong)
• Airport will have annual passenger capacity of 20 million
• To offer world class shopping experience, relaxation, entertainment
