No construction pics yet
I visited the airport construction site, but could not get any pictures for the forum. Work is at very early stage, but the employees seems to be bullish on the 24 month construction deadline followed by three month trial run.
There is lot of confusion regarding the access to the airport. Everyone is banking on the Outer Ring Road Project to provide access to the airport from the city. But the ORR project seems to be in trouble for lack of funds. Will keep you posted with any updates.. |

I wonder if there was any controversy before this project started. Otherwise, this will be a unique one :-)

![]() HYDERABAD AIRPORT ISSUE http://pd.cpim.org/2004/1226/12262004_cpimpc.htm The CPI(M) opposed the UPA government decision of sanctioning a new Rs 1,385 crore greenfield airport in Hyderabad, saying it totally compromises national interest. Nilotpal Basu said that as per the information received by him, this would entail closing down of the existing Begumpet airport, which was worth Rs 900 crore. He saw no reason why this should be done, particularly when the private investment in the proposed new international airport is just Rs 200 crore, with the rest coming from AAI, government and public financial institutes. He quoted from a central government report which stated that with the present trends, the existing airport in Hyderabad would be able to service passengers till another 11 years. |

But from what I hear, there is a lot of accelerated contruction activity. The approach roads are being laid; the ground levelling for the runway, and taxiway is almost complete; and work on the terminal and control tower has started. Even the most sceptical Hyderabadis now believe that the airport would start functioning sometime in 2008. |

Work on new Hyderabad airport progressing rapidly
Hyderabad: Work on the new international airport at Shamshabad near here is progressing rapidly and its promoters are confident of completing it by November next year so that commercial operations can be launched in 2008.
Fifteen percent of the work on the passenger terminal building, including the air traffic control tower, and eight percent of the work on airside and landside have been completed. Exactly a year after the foundation stone for the $390-million project was laid, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy Thursday visited the site to review its progress. Officials of Hyderabad International Airport Limited (HIAL) briefed Reddy about the developments. "The progress is quite remarkable and the promoters are confident that they will be able to complete the work by November next year," he told newsmen. After the completion of work, all statutory tests will be conducted and licenses will be obtained in three months, and commercial operations will be launched from April 2008. The airport, coming up on 5,000 acres at Shamshabad, about 20 km from the city, will be capable of handling seven million passengers and over 10,000 tonnes of cargo a year in the first phase. The runway, with state-of-the-art features, will have a length of 4,260 meters, compatible for Airbus A-380 aircraft. HIAL managing director Kiran K. Grandhi said the deadline for completing construction would be met. National Advisory Council chairperson Sonia Gandhi had laid the foundation stone for the project being built by HIAL, a joint venture of GMR Group (63 percent), Malaysia Airports Holding Berhad (11 percent), Airports Authority of India (13 percent) and the Andhra Pradesh government (13 percent). The project achieved financial closure Aug 23, 2005, while work began Oct 10. Construction major Larsen and Toubro Limited, as part of its $110 million contract, has taken up airside and landside works including runway, taxiway and aprons. China State Construction Engineering (Hong Kong), which bagged a $136-million contract, is building the passenger terminal building and installing baggage handling, IT, electrical and mechanical systems. In an effort to provide faster connectivity from the city to the airport, the chief minister Thursday laid the foundation stone for an 11.5-km elevated expressway. The four-lane expressway, claimed to be the longest in India, will connect Mehdipatnam in the city to Aramghar crossroads on the Bangalore national highway leading towards the airport. GMR, which had mooted the idea for the Rs.6-billion project, will also file a tender. The chief minister announced that work on the 160-km Outer Ring Road, which will provide connectivity to the airport, would begin in three weeks. He said the Hyderabad Urban Development Authority would start the work pending finalisation of a developer for the project. |

Hyderabad set for new-look airport
Tuesday, March 28, 2006 (Hyderabad):
The new Hyderabad International airport is slated to take off in the first quarter of 2008, with a long-term vision to handle over 40 million passengers. Its 4260 metre-long runway, one of the longest in the country, and the airport will have the capacity to handle a traffic of 7 million passengers a year, up from 4 million at present, as soon as it launches. Spread over an area of 5400 acres, the airport project will cost Rs 1760 crore in the first phase. Growing traffic The project is a joint venture company promoted by the GMR group, with Malaysia Airports and the state and the Central governments as co-promoters. The GMR group has bagged the rights to develop the Delhi airport as well. The promoters project the traffic to grow up to 20 million passengers every year in the next decade, which will necessitate a second passenger terminal. "The growth rates in excess of 20 per cent are easily sustainable. As a private airport owner, we are going to drive this business and provide partnership synergies to the airlines," said T Srinagesh, COO, Hyderabad International Airport. The project promises to deliver a dream airport that will offer a never-before flying experience. An airport village will cater to the passengers' relatives and friends so they don't have to wait outside the airport. In more good news for the passengers, the 60 check-in and 18 immigration counters will hopefully make long queues a thing of the past. |
