Atlas sets up materials exposing site near Chennai

Atlas Weathering Services Group, a division of the US-based Atlas Material Testing Technology, has set up an outdoor materials exposing site at Uttiramerur, about 70 km from Chennai, primarily to serve Indian clients.

At such a site, materials ranging from plastics to metal are arranged in racks and left exposed to natural weather conditions for a few weeks to a few years. Through such exposure, products ranging from automobile parts to biodegradable bottles are tested for longevity and material wear and tear, prior to launching them in public.

“Weathering-related tests are key components in the specifications laid down by automobile companies and other industries abroad,” said Mr C.S. Ravi, General Manager, Atlas Material Testing Technology (India) Pvt Ltd.

But the action is on. River Side, a jumbo mall at Karapakkam near Chennai, when completed in the fourth quarter of 2008, would take up 11 lakh square feet of built-up space, including a mammoth parking area, according to industry sources. The mall is being set up at a cost of Rs 500 crore, with a Rs 100-crore loan from HUDCO. Marg Constructions, the project developer who has invested Rs 50 crore, is on the lookout for strategic investors to raise Rs 100 crore, and hopes to raise the rest through a mixture of debt and equity.

According to G R K Reddy, managing director, Marg Constructions, 30 per cent of the space at the new mall has already been booked. “The demand for organised retail in Chennai has been growing by leaps and bounds. Karapakkam is a good strategic location for our retail operations,” Reddy said.

Industry sources said the Fame Adlabs theatre chain, owned by Mumbai-based Shringar Cinemas, would start its south India operations with a four-screen multiplex at River Side.

Satyam, Inox and PVR, which have been operating theatre chains in Chennai, are likely to increase their footprint through these malls, along with new entrants such as Cinemax and Fame. While PVR is planning screens at the four lakh square feet Ampa Mall, Satyam is known to have leased space at the upcoming eight lakh square feet Express Mall, coming up on land formerly owned by Indian Express Group (Madurai). Westside is planning to set up flagship stores at both these malls once they become operational in mid-2008.

4th quarter 2008 is too ambitious for XXL river side mall. Not sure if they started construction. Any new photos on contruction side of river side?

Has construction started for any other mall in OMR. coromandal or arihant mall?

I doubt this would ever happen, not because it is impossible but there are other factors that play a role in this issue. And all govts. so far have tried to safeguard their vote banks at the expense of citizens. As improbable of shameful as it is, more than 50% of the educated mass do not vote, the vote mainly comes from the so called uneducated or lower class citizen. All govts. speak about eradication of this class but their measures are meagre, because they dont have the will. If everyone is educated and aware of law and order they cannot run their raj. Vested interests, selfish or party or caste centered interests have largely hampered the upliftment of poor. Its just my humble opinion

no pics, but yeah, the Riverside mall ha sdefinitely started work.. excavation is well underway.. 4th quarter 2008 may be a little tight, but definitely Q1 2009 is pretty likely..

Coromandel Plaza is quite far along - it's up to 3 floors now.. should be done by mid-2008 i think..

Satyam sets up R&D centre for auto sector

Satyam Computer Services Ltd has set up a Centre of Excellence here to undertake research and development for the automotive sector.

The centre will provide research support services (all in digital forms) in the areas of alternate fuels, hybrid engines, virtual test drive solutions and emerging areas such as infotainment. Every component of a car can be digitally tested and validated, Mr Subu D. Subramanian, Director and Vice-President, Satyam, told newspersons.

The collaboration design centre will enable Satyam to work simultaneously with multiple research and development institutions across the world. The company will have tie-ups with 25 leading institutions such as the Indian Institute of Science and Vellore Institute of Technology in India, and Purdue and Carnegie Mellon in the US, Mr Subramanian said.

The Rs 6-crore centre on the Rajiv Gandhi Road (Old Mahabalipuram Road), the information technology corridor, will be inaugurated in a month. It has a capacity to house 1,000 engineers in three years and to begin with, there will be around 50 engineers, he said.

For the Hyderabad-based software company, 12 per cent of its revenue (Rs 6,485 crore for fiscal ended March 2007) came from the automotive sector. It works with eight of the top 10 global automotive companies, he added.

Mr Subramanian said Satyam would create an eco-system to make India the “R&D super hub by 2010.” It will bring industries and institutions to work on research such as hybrid engine programme (such as two and three-wheelers to benefit the Indian market) and create a consortium management process to enable Indian companies and institutions to work together for large R&D programmes.

Satyam, in a CII conclave, announced that a consortium would develop an “India Car” called HERA fxV, which will be a digital framework that can be used by automotive manufacturers to build a car. Like Microsoft .Net or Oracle platforms for software applications, HERA fxV will be a platform for the automotive industry. It will take nearly 24 months to build the framework, he said.

Country's largest hotel planned in Chennai

http://www.hindu.com/2007/09/02/stor...0260731300.htm

Hoteliers flock to the South

Indrani Dutta

Country’s largest hotel planned in Chennai

Oberoi group plans new properties

ITC’s luxury hotel

in Bangalore

KOLKATA: Three southern States — Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka — have become attractive destinations for hotel projects and an estimated investment of Rs. 4,000 crore is set to flow into these three States in the next five years. In fact, the country’s largest hotel is coming up in Chennai, work on which will begin in a month. This is ITC’s first greenfield project in the State, according to Nakul Anand, head of ITC’s hotel business.

Of the Rs. 4,500 crore investment announced by P. R. S. Oberoi of the Oberoi group of hotels and resorts, a significant proportion would be spent on setting up new properties in the South.

Out of the five hotel projects lined up for opening by the group by 2009, three are in the South — two in Bangalore and one in Hyderabad. This would add not only rooms but also serviced-apartments, a relatively new concept which targets the long-stay corporate client.

The ITC group, which is focussing on its hotel business in a big way is setting up a luxury hotel in Bangalore, besides the one in Chennai. The Tatas too have their plans for this region.

An official of the Hotel Association of India, the industry apex body, said that from the tourism point of view, the South had very rich potential and was a popular destination.

According to Mr. Anand, the presence of a metro and two semi-metros like Bangalore and Hyderabad did enhance the lure of the southern region as a good business proposition for hoteliers. “Infrastructure in this region has developed very well, with the IT and the IT-enabled service segments such as call centres, as well as the automobile industry are generating a higher demand for hotel rooms,” he said.
Rs. 1,000 cr. project

Elaborating on the new hotel in Chennai, which will be called ITC Grand Chola, Mr. Anand told The Hindu that this would come up on an eight-acre plot in Guindy on the former Campa Cola land. Construction was expected to start within a month.

“We are trying to better the industry norm of 36 months,” he said. The Rs. 1,000-crore project will have 550-deluxe rooms. The project also encompasses 100 service apartments, retail space, besides conference and exhibition facilities.

This is ITC’s first greenfield hotel project in Chennai from where it started its hotels business in 1975 with the acquisition of the Chola Hotel.

Any reason why Oberoi doesn't want to setup shop in Chennai ? (Trident doesn't count). When they actually decided to take the plunge - they chose a partner (Balaji Hotels) and we all know how that went.

Thanks

Mumbai definitely has 2 - one long and one short..

MAA has 2 intersecting runways already, so maybe they mean 2 parallel runways including the new one..
