Power Plants need huge quantity of cooling water to condense steam from Turbines for recycling. Cheapest source of water is Sea and in a water starved state like TN, they necessarily have to be near the the Coast. Also transporting Coal and letting out flyash becomes easy.

The joint venture will start operations in 2008 and hire more than 1,500 workers by 2010, they said in a statement.

The move comes as carmakers have begun looking into the possibility of introducing low-priced cars for the hotly-contested Indian market.

There seem to be problems like settlement in one of the sections near Le Meridien - Airport side. Reinforcement is being done.

Cloverleaf areas can not be done unless the extra areas are acquired for the same. Only in HTL and HIET sides, Acquisition process is over.

With this i think Kathipara flyover also joins the ever increasing list of never completing projects. Governments will change and so will the deadlines. MRTS, IT expway and now Kathipara the list goes on and on

I pass through that every other day, kathipara flyover would most likely be completed in Aprl 2009.

I dont have much complaints with Kathipara. By indian standards it is an ambitious projects given the fact it is located close to the city. The non technical aspects seem to be the biggest hurdle in these projects. However MRTS & OMR though ambitious are way too much drag. I agree with you on that.

I pass through all the major infrastructure projects-the IT expressway, the Kathipara flyover, the elevated portion of Chennai Bypass phase 2 in Ambattur Estate and the Padi flyover- everyday.I can tell you that the Padi flyover was in a much advanced state than Kathipara five months back(It still could be) but over the last three months, construction has slowed down in Padi and speeded up in Kathipara. In the Padi rotary flyover, the stretches over the four sides are around 75% complete but at the centre rotary portion just the pillars have been laid. Also, there could be delays in construction over the railway line as I think that the railway operations in the Villivakkam-Anna nagar stretch are still on.I feel that both that the progress of Kathipara and padi grade seperators are satisfactory by Indian Standards and honestly the ongoing constructions haven't caused great difficulty in the last two years I have been using them.

The progress of the elevated stretch of Chennai bypass is also going on.Work goes on everyday. The earlier deadline for the project was a very Ambitious Nov 2007 but now it has been revised to April 2009 and I think that this deadline would be met atleast for the stretch over Ambattur estate. This project too does not cause much hassles as the construction is going on in new stretches without greatly affecting the existing ones.

Now, we come to the IT expressway.I don't think that this project could be compared in scale to the Bypass or the MRTS which are really huge projects comprising long portions of elevated stretches.IT expressway(not really an expressway ) was a project to lay twenty km of six lane roads and when the project had started this stretch was not as crowded as today. This project has gone way behind schedule.Even today, the average density of traffic on this road (taking into account the whole day) is far less than any other road in Chennai and even then the traffic snarls during its construction have been long and irritating.I feel that this project should be used as a case study for a subject like "What not to do in constructing Roads". . The approach to road laying followed here(completely ignoring the hardships to the commuting public) cannot be justified by any thing.
Sorry for the long post..Just Could not stop myself

Chennai, Sep 7 : Pearl Academy of Fashion plans to build a new and bigger campus at Sriperumbudur near Chennai. The academy has identified a three-acre plot and will begin construction soon.

The Pearl Academy is promoted by Little People Education Society, which in turn is floated by the New Delhi based House of Pearl Fashions Limited.

"The new campus will be spread over 150,000 sq. ft, similar to our campuses in Jaipur and Delhi. We will be shifting the Chennai centre to the new campus next year," A.K.G. Nair, group director (National & International) said.

Moser Baer plans Rs 1,000-cr unit near Chennai

Optical disc manufacturer Moser Baer India is likely to set up a 100-acre manufacturing unit located in the special economic zone at Oragadam, near Chennai.

According to reliable sources, the project is likely to involve an investment of about Rs 1,000 crore. However, it is not clear what the unit will manufacture — CDs, DVDs or wafers used to produce solar cells. Earlier this year, senior company officials had told Business Line that Moser Baer was exploring the possibility of setting up a thin film solar fab unit at the Noida SEZ for wafer manufacturing that would in turn be used to produce solar cells.

This April, the company’s subsidiary, Moser Baer Photo Voltaic, acquired 40 per cent equity in Slovenia-based Solarvalue Proizvodnja with an aim to produce solar cells at competitive prices. Moser Baer also has a home entertainment business called Moser Baer Entertainment.

It is understood that, as per government policy, a minimum investment of Rs 1,000 crore in a semiconductor manufacturing facility that includes solar cells and storage devices is entitled to incentives of up to 25 per cent of the project cost.

When contacted, company officials said discussions were ongoing with the Government and “nothing is finalised”.

Soon Medical Park near Chennai

Quote:
"We are soon starting the first public Medical Park in Chinglepet, 40 km away from Chennai. It will be a vaccine and medical devices park," he told reporters at the launch of a joint venture between Trivitron, a Chennai-based medical equipment company, and Japan's Aloka for manufacturing high technology ultrasound equipment in India.

"I want Indian and global companies to come together to come out with medical equipments and devices which will be first used in India and if they manufactured in excess could be exported, a policy followed successfully in China," he said.

Nestronics to invest 85 cr for expanding EMS facility

http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/...0850920400.htm

Quote:
Electronics manufacturing services (EMS) provider Nestronics India Pvt Ltd plans to invest about Rs 85 crore in setting up 12 assembly lines at its Chennai facility.
The expansion plan, extending over three years, also involves an addition of about 80,000 sq ft of manufacturing area to the company’s existing 20,000 sq ft, and ramping up headcount to 450 from the present 120.
Domestic operations

The company, a wholly owned subsidiary of Singapore-based Nestronics Ltd, assembles printed circuit boards and currently operates two lines, each capable of assembling about 80,000 components an hour.

A third line is expected to be operational in a few months. The facility makes products for the telecom tower equipment industry and has recently commenced pilot testing of medical equipment assembly.

We plan to have 15 assembly lines in India by 2010 and will add 1-2 lines every quarter to reach this target,” said Mr P.N. Mathur, General Manager, Nestronics India. The expansion will be funded through external commercial borrowings and internal accruals.

Low manufacturing cost

Eventually, all manufacturing activity would be moved out of Nestronics’ Singapore facility (currently operating four lines) into India, including lines catering to biotechnology and oil and gas industries, he said.

Government to import cement
CHENNAI: The Centre has permitted the State Government to import cement in a bid to control its prices, Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudy announced on Friday.

A notification for the procurement was issued on Friday, he said in a statement. A Union Commerce and Industry Ministry communication, sent a few days ago to the State Government, stated that the State could import up to 1.5 lakh tonnes a month. The Tamil Nadu Cements Corporation will import the cement. The Union Government’s approval follows the State Government’s efforts to find a solution to the prices increasing in recent months. (At the all-India level, the prices went up by about 45 per cent between January 2006 and July 2007). About 10 days ago, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi told at a function organised by the Builders’ Association of India that he had written to Union Minister Kamal Nath to permit the State to import cement.

The official said that as a follow-up to the Chief Minister’s letter, Mr. Ponmudy visited New Delhi and discussed the matter. During the Budget session of the Assembly in May, Finance Minister K. Anbazhagan said the government was considering import of cement.

Nearly three weeks ago, the Centre announced that the MMTC had been mandated to import cement from those foreign manufacturers. The exemption from the standard mark would be applicable for 150 days from the date of recording of their applications or till the grant of regular licence by the BIS, whichever is earlier. After the extension of the deadline till the end of last month, the Corporation received responses from several companies...
good for the construction projects
