UPDATE OF MADURAI RAILWAY JUNCTION MODERNISATION

NEW LOOK: A retiring room at the Madurai railway station.

Quote:
Mundane ambience, worn out mattresses, untidy bedspreads… All these are things of the past when it comes to railway retiring rooms. As part of the ongoing modernisation programme, Southern Railway has sanctioned funds for renovation of retiring rooms at par with industry standards.

In Madurai Division, the frontline managers seem to have taken star hotels as the benchmark. Retiring rooms here will now be a passengers’ paradise what with modern furniture, twin AC units, television, elegant interiors and catering services linked with the food plaza’s multi-cuisine restaurant — all this for just Rs. 750.

“We have taken up this project as a passenger amenity improvement scheme. Twenty-two retiring rooms in Madurai will be upgraded at an estimated cost of Rs.28 lakh. Intercom facility with connectivity to restaurants, security and other services will be available,” Divisional Railway Manager Hemant Kumar said on Saturday.

Retiring rooms in other major stations in the division will be taken up for renovation in a phased manner. The main corridor of the retiring rooms will be covered by surveillance cameras linked to the closed circuit television network of the Railway Protection Force to prevent entry of unauthorised persons.

“We want to make no compromise in the quality of service. The tariff fixed for this ambience is perhaps the cheapest in the city,” he added.

Apart from this, a meditation room for engine drivers has been constructed in the Railway Colony.

Outstation drivers coming to Madurai on duty can use the meditation centre, which also has a music system.

The facility created as per the Railway Board’s directive is expected to manage the stress level of drivers.

A.P. Mishra, Southern Railway Additional General Manager and Director of Public Grievances, visited the renovated retiring rooms and meditation centre on Saturday.

He also held discussions with senior railway officials on the performance of the division on various fronts

Nasscom identifies Madurai for growth prospects..

Quote:
Nasscom identifies Pune, Chandigarh, Mysore, Madurai and Tiruchi for growth prospects
Availability of ‘A’ category commercial

real estate space is important

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CHENNAI: It is not just the IT and ITES sectors that are growing and need to expand to smaller cities and towns. The development of industrial clusters, corridors, estates, hubs and a whole lot of units in the services sector has virtually choked the State capitals and their suburbs. Both States and the private sector recognise the need to shift to Tier II and Tier III towns to prevent further congestion in major cities and to propel the growth of smaller cities and towns.

The National Association of Software and Service Companies (Nasscom) has already identified a list of second tier cities and towns where development must take place. They include centres such as Chandigarh, Pune, Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Mangalore, Mysore, Kochi, Coimbatore, Madurai, and Tiruchi. Some of these towns, including Pune, Mysore, and Coimbatore, are already being crowded with new industries and IT/ ITES units. The pressure on these towns has begun to show, exposing once more the inadequacies of the systems, and the inability of the private sector and the government agencies to act in tandem to promote new investment centres.

What is it that the industry or the investor expects in emerging centres? A cross section of captains of industry and trade has some common demands as well as expectations peculiar to a particular sector.

Industry expectation

In general terms, they want better physical and social infrastructure in these towns. “Some industries and sectors have tried the SEZ type of development, but there appears to be a mixed response. Employees and their families do not want to be out of a town or thrown into a closed gated community. Though they welcome residential colonies, they still prefer to be an integral part of a town or society — not to live by themselves. They do not want to see the same faces day in and day out,” says a senior official of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI). Nowadays, such colonies and townships have become even more difficult to build, because acquiring land becomes a Himalayan task. Which is why, industry looks to government and its agencies to assist in this process. Physical infrastructure will include roads, transport, services, housing, air and rail connectivity, while social infrastructure should provide for educational institutions, health services, recreation facilities, and hotels.

Driving expansion

Since IT and ITES have been driving this expansion to second tier cities, it may be useful to get its perspective on this development. Cognizant’s Managing Director and President R. Chandrasekaran says: “The primary reason for the IT industry to be attracted to a Tier II city or a Tier III city is its educational infrastructure and the resultant quality talent pool. The second important criterion is infrastructure. Availability of ‘A’ category commercial real estate space, preferably with SEZ notification, good roads, airport with good connectivity, and good hotels, is important. Even if one or more of these may not exist initially, visible efforts to develop them in parallel become important. Otherwise, the initial enthusiasm will die down and companies may not grow in these locations.”

He suggests that State governments can even set up advanced R&D facilities in collaboration with the local universities so that technology skill base can improve in the long run.

But others who have been looking at Coimbatore now either find it difficult to get land, or that it is too costly to make it viable. Confederation of Indian Industry’s (CII) Coimbatore zone Chairman K. Thangaraj says: “We need a city where growth comes without much pain — growth where quality of life is not affected for any section of the society. The growth we have witnessed may only be the tip of an iceberg. Cities such as our’s must focus on a vision for the future. We should look at a Greater Coimbatore, inclusive of the suburbs, where land is still available. Horizontal growth can be planned, with specific areas earmarked for particular uses, and provided good connectivity."

Unless industry, government, and the local body work together to evolve a broad framework of infrastructure development in Tier II and Tier III towns, they will run into problems before long. Planning and its implementation hold the key.

MADURAI - A SUB-CAPITAL OF TAMILNADU.

TamilNadu Womens Federation's 3rd Meeting was held in Thamukkam Grounds of Madurai, a few days ago , as a part of NEW ENTRANT of THAMUKKAM - KOODALARANGAM - a fully classical & Tamil show cum exhibition.....

In that meeting , The womens federation of TamilNadu had proposed a demand to the TN Chiefminister to announce the TEMPLE CITY-MADURAI as Second Capital ( or ) Sub-Capital of TamilNadu. They also explained that it will be great if the TN Government establish here a SECRETRIAT Buiding Branch and holding the Assembly meetings for 6 months in MADURAI.They also told that it will be more helpful in the development of the southern districts like MADURAI , RAMNAD , SIVAGANGA . THENI , DINDIGUL , TIRUNELVELI , VIRUDUNAGAR , KANYAKUMARI , TUTUCORIN , KARAIKUDI , TRICHENDUR etc.,

They quoted : It's not impossible because a few days ago ,Karnataka had announced BELGAUM as its second capital & now establishing a VIDHAN-SOUDHA there for holding 6-months assembly-meeting. As already Madurai is having the HIGH-COURT Building , Establishing the TamilNadu Secretrait & holding the 6-months Assembly meeting in MADURAI will pave the way for INDUSTRIALIZATION and other Developmental activities in the South.....

It is to be noted that MADURAI is considered as the CAPITAL-CITY of Southern districts according to the Mediapersons and Merchants.

Bio-diesel plant to be set up in city

MADURAI: A bio-diesel plant will be set up in the city at a cost of Rs.25 lakh under the aegis of the Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology, according to Member Secretary S. Vincent.

He told The Hindu here on Saturday that the plant — the first of its kind in the State — would be established in association with the Madurai Kamaraj University and a non-governmental organisation.

Efforts would be taken to identify suitable agricultural land where Jatropha could be cultivated. Once the plant functioned successfully, similar ones would be set up in other districts also. In all probability, the bio-diesel plant would come up in three months.

Dr. Vincent said the council was trying to create a network of research scientists to help in its endeavour to provide scientific intervention to problems faced by the district administration. Hence, with the help of the Government, it had instituted awards for scientists and was in the process of collecting profiles of promising scientists.

The council was now evolving a new science and technology policy for the State Government and it would consult them in the exercise. The main thrust of the policy would be on creation of an application-oriented curriculum for students.

Satellite town is the correct terminology, and not Subcity.

Bus Bay means a dedicated space for the buses to be parked. I guess, there would have been incidents of traffic jams / accidents as buses were parked in the middle of the road, and Dinamalar would have demanded for a bus bay here, not sure though.

You are right. That's what exactly happened. In fact, they should plan for more bus bays on this road which has enough space to do that. The service roads in this entire bypass is being wasted with shops and other vehicles parked in it.

Site to be identified for dental college

The Collector had been asked to identify a suitable land for setting up a Government dental college in Madurai, K. K. S. S. R. Ramachandran, Health Minister, said here on Tuesday. A few sites had been identified by officials and a decision on the location of the proposed college would be taken soon.

He was talking to presspersons after conducting a three-hour review meeting with district health officials and doctors at the Collectorate. He said that the authorities concerned were directed to expedite construction work at primary health centres, Government hospitals and Government Rajaji Hospital/ Madurai Medical College in the city.

Over Rs.2.5 crore would be spent towards construction of buildings at the 100-bed Government hospital at Usilampatti and another Rs.1.2 crore for a 24-bed hospital at Tirumangalam.

For the 25-bed hospital at Melur, the Government would construct building at a cost of Rs.1 crore and for the Peraiyur hospital at Rs.1.2 crore. He said that buildings were also coming up at Sholavandan hospital at a cost of Rs.60 lakh.

He said that the Government had sanctioned Rs.2.6 crore to construct new hostels at the Madurai Medical College and the GRH authorities had been asked to ensure that the work started soon.

The MDU-CBE highway is 2 lane except between MDU-Dindigul were 4 laning works are going on. Im not sure about the quality of the road now. Four laning works are going on in MDU-Dindigul(NH 7), MDU-Tuticorin(NH 45B), MDU-Virudhunagar(NH 7) and MDU-Trichy(NH 45B). NHAI will soon take up 4 laning of MDU-Rameswaram under NHDP IIIB. The only two NH's left out from 4 laning are Madurai-Theni and Tirumangalam-Rajapalayam.

Unfortunately there has been no update on the runway expansion in any of the print media for a long time. Anyone in Madurai please update us on the current status. I hope they complete it by this month as said before. Unless they complete it, it would be difficult to operate international flights. There were previously news that some international airline companies were interested in operating flights out of MDU after the completion of runway expansion works.

Madurai-Trichy and Madurai-Dindukal are different projects?
I thought,Madurai-Dindukal comes under Madurai-Trichy 4 laning work.that is ,Madurai-Dindukal-Trichy.

Madurai-Coimbatore route is not NH?
