Hotels’ offer to tourists during Chithirai fete

MADURAI: Several star-class hotels in the city are offering special tariff discounts for tourists, both foreign and domestic, during the coming Chithirai festival season.

Fortune Pandiyan Hotel, GRT Regency and Hotel Germanus will offer 50 per cent discount on the published tariffs from April 27 to May 11 to promote tourism, K. Muralidharan, general manager, GRT Regency, and also the vice-president of Travel Club, told The Hindu here on Thursday.

Gateway Hotels, Heritance Madurai, Royal Court and Sangam have also agreed to give special discounts for this period. This initiative, launched last year by the Travel Club, is intended to popularise the festival among tourists, he said.

It also aims to enable them witness its three main events of ‘tirukkalyanam’ (celestial wedding), car festival and the entry of Lord Kallazhagar into the Vaigai, said G. Vasudevan, past president of Travel Club and Director of Fortune Pandiyan Hotel.

A brochure containing a calendar of events was also circulated in the International Tourism Bourse (ITB) through Travel Club officials to create awareness among foreign travel operators and ensure they include the events in India in their itinerary, said Mr. Muralidharan.

ITB, one of the world’s largest travel trade shows, is held annually in Berlin, Germany.

“This year we are expecting 100 foreign tourists for the festivals and have requested permission for domestic tourists also as it will generate more domestic tourist movement to Madurai,” he said.

Dr. Vasudevan said that the Chithirai festival, which sees thousands from south India congregate in Madurai for 15 days, could be a major attraction among tourists.

“A majority of the foreign tourists want to experience different cultures and heritage. Such a mega event being held every year could be a major draw among foreign tourists,” he said.

The feedback from the last year’s tourists who saw the event was phenomenal. He also quoted the feedbacks received last year.

CII to setup textile, rubber, chemical and food processing SME clusters in Madurai

Quote:
As part of the industry cluster initiative for the small and medium enterprise sector, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII)’s southern region is planning to launch 15 new clusters across south in 2009. The industry body had started the initiative in 2004.

Chairman of CII Southern Region C R Swaminathan said so far around 93 companies from the southern states benefited through the cluster approach, which was launched to improve the internal competitiveness and gain sustainable advantage in the business. It has generated recurring savings to the tune of 70 crore every year in the region.

In Tamil Nadu, the CII is planning to set up a cluster in Madurai for textile, rubber, chemical and food processing. Around 23 companies have evinced interest, he said.

Similarly, two clusters each in Tiruchy and Erode and one in Puducherry would come up.

In Andhra Pradesh, the focus will be on original equipment manufacturers and in Kerala it would be on rubber units. CII is looking at launching the clusters in three months, said B T Bangera, chairman, cluster forum, CII-SR.

The SMEs encounter stumbling blocks in accessing competent cost-effective training programme on an extended time basis of 15-18 months. It is this aspect that makes cluster approach a viable tool as the handholding sessions provide group learning, which automatically results in sharing the training cost among the members to a very viable level.

Automobile components manufacturers, machine tool manufacturers, special purpose machines manufacturers, foundries, tool and die makers, and food industry are some of the sectors of the clusters.

B T Bangera, chairman, cluster forum (CII-SR) is actually the MD of Hi-Tech Arai Ltd, Madurai. Its good that we have a representative (chairman) in cluster forum (CII-SR) from Madurai.

Nh7 is fully finished within our district limits on both directions(north and south)...It's a great pleasure to drive at high speeds...But sometimes this traffic is irritating as the Local people are coming on opposite lane......Though it's opened to traffic on both sides.....Forgive me if it was already discussed...

The 4-track OverBridge across railway track in Samayanallur is still not over. The concrete beams across the railway tracks are not yet in place. May be this part will be done by Southern Railway.

The bridge across the River Vaigai is yet to complete.

But if we start from Madurai city, the 4 track towards South appears complete (except toll gate) as the 4 track starts only from Thoppur, and in the north the 4 track from Samayanallur to Dindigul is nearly over (with very few 'take diversions' to run on 2 tracks).

There were many instances of airline companies (both from India and other countries) showing interest in Madurai. But, it looks like some vested interests in AAI is against to it, probably in the interest of the other places. Its a shame that we have to live with the filthy policies or administration.

Yes, for the last so many years we are hearing stories about Air Lanka, Malaysian airlines, Air India express etc interested in starting International services and nothing happened. Every time, they give some excuse and say soon it will start. Even the planned Helicopter service linking madurai with Kodai, Rameswaram etc not happened. For this no need for any special facility etc., Still nothing moved in this matter also.

Somtime back, they talked of July 09. But after that no noise from AAI officials as well as politicians. So I think it would be ready only by October 09 and probably intl services may start in Jan/Feb 10 and not before
