Podanur-Pollachi-Dindigul section closed for gauge conversion

Quote:
Coimbatore (PTI): The metre gauge railway line between Podanur-Pollachi-Dindigul will be closed for gauge conversion work from May 26.

Consequently, there will be no train service in the Podanur-Pollachi and Pollachi-Dindigul sections, a southern railway release said on Friday.

Train No.771 Podanur-Dindigul passenger on May 25 would be the last train in the MG section, the release said.

The section would be converted to broad gauge, it said, but did not mention the time frame for completion of the project.
http://www.hindu.com/thehindu/holnus...0905221382.htm

Lets see how many years they take to complete this stretch. Its unbelievable to know that two big cities in TN (Madurai and Coimbatore) next only to Chennai do not have a direct BG line between them.

How about Palaghat-Pollachi is it also part of this gauge conversion ?. We could see a drastic reduction in distance and time from Madurai to north and central coastal towns in Kerala apart from Coimbatore.

When the above section and Kollam-Tenkasi section gets completed then Madurai and south TN will get better connectivity to Kerala. Currently both rail and road connectivity is very poor between those regions.

Azhagiri might get Chemicals and Fertilisers Minister post

Quote:
DMK leaders M K Azhagiri, A Raja and Dayanidhi Maran will get Cabinet portfolios, but Union Shipping Minister T R Baalu will be dropped from the government. Baalu will be accommodated as Deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha, sources tell CNN-IBN.

Sources say Raja will retain the Communication and Information Technology Ministry and Maran will be given the Textiles Ministry. Azhagiri will be made the Chemicals and Fertilisers Minister. Kanimozhi, the party’s face in New Delhi, is likely to be Minister of State. The party will also get four ministers of state in the government.
http://ibnlive.in.com/news/3-ministr.../93262-37.html

If at all Azhagiri puts in a good effort, how useful would the "Chemicals and Fertilisers" minister post be for the development of Madurai ?. In south TN, I guess Tuticorin which is known for chemical and fertilizer industries could benefit. I think even Madurai has small and medium sized chemical industries.

If he become Chemicals & Fertilisers minister, he should try to start back the SPIC plant since it is in shutdown for long time.
SPIC is a ricebowl for tuticorin area..

Azhagiri after sworning in...

Quote:
In a brief interaction with reporters at Tamil Nadu House, Mr. Azhagiri said, “I thank the people of Tamil Nadu, the Chief Minister and the DMK chief (M. Karunanidhi) for giving me an opportunity to serve the people of the State.” He said, “I will serve the people of this country in general and Tamil Nadu in particular. Madurai will be given preferential treatment, because I am elected from there.”

http://www.hindu.com/2009/05/29/stor...2950280100.htm
Wish he translates those words into actions. It is very uncommon for a cabinet minister to blatantly state like this.. If this thought stays alive atleast at the back of his mind, Madurai could see some development..

I too have the same opinion. Let him do well for the whole country from his ministry and let him do good things specifically for Madurai in all the areas (not just chemicals and fertilizers) as an MP. I hope that's what he meant and hope he does that.
