For students interested in studying biological sciences, it is destination Madurai. That is the premier position attained by this temple city, primarily due to the pre-eminent status achieved by the School of Biological Sciences of Madurai Kamaraj University.

With its leadership in life sciences and cutting-edge biotechnology courses, the university is one of the most sought after higher education institutions in the country for all related disciplines — be it biotechnology, genomics, plant sciences and so on.

From being just a post-graduate extension centre of the Zoology Department of University of Madras in the 1960s, the university has now reached a stage where it is identified for its unparalleled strengths in biological sciences. Students and researchers flock to Madurai every academic year to get an opportunity to work in its well-equipped laboratories.

“The speciality of MKU is that here biology is taught as an integrated discipline,” says P. Gunasekaran, Senior Professor and Head of Department of Genetics. Credit should go to Prof.S. Krishnaswamy who conceived the idea of teaching biology as an integrated discipline at a time when life sciences was compartmentalised into botany, zoology, microbiology and so on. Prof. SK felt that the totality of the living state is more important than studying animals and plants in isolation. So, he founded the Department of Biological Sciences as the country's first integrated department when the university was started in 1966, says Dr. Gunasekaran.

Due to its sustained success since then, the School of Biological Sciences of MKU has established itself as a ‘Centre for Excellence in Genomic Sciences' and has also been designated as a ‘Networking Resource Centre for Biological Sciences' in the country.

Genomic sciences

In the area of genomics, the university has been offering University Grants Commission (UGC)-supported programmes for advanced genomics research and education. Major focus areas in genomics are microbial genomics, metagenomics, environmental genomics, human genomics, immunogenomics, cancer genomics and computational genomics.

“We have expertise in all these fields. In the last 10 years, the Centre for Excellence in Genomic Sciences has turned out about 175 M.Sc.(Genomics) and 50 Ph.D. students. They are now well placed in different institutes,” says Dr. Gunasekaran.

Here, M.Sc. (Genomics) is being offered with UGC support since 2002. A maximum of 16 students are admitted each year of which 40 per cent seats are reserved for students from other States. This course has been upgraded as an M.Sc- Ph.D integrated course.

As a Networking Resource Centre, the MKU has arrived at the national scene with a bang. With the support of UGC, a state-of-the-art infrastructure facility has been established where 20 researchers can be trained at a time in genomics, molecular biology, microbiology, human cell culture, computational genomics and so on.

Integrated Course

Since last year, the School of Biological Sciences of MKU is offering five-year integrated M.SC - Ph.D with financial support from the Department of Biotechnology. Only 24 students will be admitted every year through a national-level screening test. Selected candidates would be supported with a monthly scholarship of Rs.1,200 for the first two years. After two years, the university will confer M.Sc. (Genomics) degree to students.

Thereafter, top 15 meritorious students get admission for Ph.D in Genomics with a monthly fellowship of Rs.14,000. Of the total 24 seats for the integrated programme, 40 per cent of seats are reserved for students from other States. Microbial Gene Technology

The Department of Microbial Technology offers M.Sc.(Microbial Gene Technology) which is a self-supporting course. Most of the students who passed out are working on various projects in different countries. Also, another postgraduate course called M.Sc Biochemical Technology is offered as a self-supporting course.

School of Biotechnology

Another major strength of MKU is its School of Biotechnology which also has national-level research laboratories.

Here, M.Sc.(Biotechnology) is offered with support of Department of Biotechnology, Government of India. Students are admitted through an all-India entrance test. This programme of MKU is rated very high in the country and in fact it was adjudged as one of the best teaching programmes by Dr. Kumar Committee which reviewed the M.Sc Biotechnology programme of various universities.

Trade bodies, industrial associations are keep to take up joint venture with the corporation

“It was a Saturday. A family of four planned to go out for dinner at a famous vegetarian restaurant near Vilakuthoon. However, after moving at a snail's pace along Kamarajar Salai, they finally chose a different joint, somewhere near the district court, as there was no space for parking their newly bought luxury car.”

This is just a sample. Parking woes are aplenty. The government agencies – particularly, the police -- are finding it extremely difficult to handle the burgeoning vehicle population. Officers say, “Our first priority is to decongest traffic and ensure smooth flow. Next is prevention of road accidents and then comes parking."

Recently, the traffic police made changes in and around Goripalayam junction by providing exclusive way for vehicles proceeding to Panagal Road and thus making the stretch easy for vehicles bound for Alagarkoil Road.

The need of the hour is to identify encroachers and evict them. This gives ample carriage space on the roads. Following heavy congestion experienced on roads like North Veli Street and West Veli Street, parking of four-wheelers has been banned. Though this new arrangement is welcomed by motorists, some of the shopkeepers in the vicinity feel the heat. The rise in number of vehicles, both two-wheelers and four-wheelers, in the temple city has compelled the law enforcing agencies to take such firm actions.

Vehicle users feel that it is high time the Madurai Corporation authorities took some pro-active steps by identifying vacant spaces and prepare them as parking zones.

Many suggestions have come up from the readers of The Hindu and motorists in the city.

1. Corporation-run school grounds and a few college grounds situated in city limits could be given a thought for being used as car parking slots after school/college hours and on holidays.

2. Trade bodies such as Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry or Tamil Nadu Foodgrains Merchants Association or Confederation of Indian Industry or the Madurai District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association may be offered these vacant sites owned by the Corporation in busy locations, wherein multi-level car parking lots could be built as a joint venture.

3. A portion of the Tamukkam Grounds may be converted as car parking space for shoppers visiting the American College shopping complex. Instead of parking in front of the shops, the four-wheelers may be given ample space at the Tamukkam Grounds. Thus, the bottleneck experienced near Thevar statue could be removed.

4. Dilapidated kalyana mandapams belonging to the Madurai Corporation, situated in the commercial zones, could be converted into vehicle parking slots.

5. Multi-level car parking could be constructed at the railway station (both sides) for people, who plan to go out of station. Also, those visiting the Town Hall Road can park their vehicles here and thus give relief to the stretch.

6. The huge space near Meenakshi Temple, where the wholesale vegetable market was once functioning, could be converted as a car park. There is a proposal, but it is a non-starter.

7. Certain locations, like the space around the Meenakshi Temple, may be kept free from vehicular movement and instead battery cars be operated free of cost as an alternative. This service is already available along the Chithirai Streets around the temple. The concept of drop and drive, like in airports, could be introduced on select/busy points.

8. Public toilets run by Corporation authorities can be demolished and in that space multi-level vehicle parking facilities can be built. The basement can have toilets/bathrooms, all on payment.

9. The temple administration can consider operating small (mini) buses to and from Meenakshi Temple, Tirumalai Nayak Mahal, Alagarkoil, Gandhi Museum, et al, by which use of private cars and vans can be avoided. The luxury coaches operated can even be charted by private groups, as done by many airline companies.

10. Vehicle parking fee can be fixed by the Corporation and the rent can be used for infrastructure building of the schools/colleges. Congested locations should be declared as ‘no parking' zones like the one announced recently along the North-West Veli Street for four-wheelers.
BOT pattern

Motorists opined that the Corporation, district administration and the police should jointly identify college/school grounds and in the event of a “no objection” from the school and college managements, an exclusive space may be earmarked for vehicle parking. The parking fee collected may be shared by the educational institutions and the operators (who could be the trade bodies or the Corporation) for maintenance and infrastructure development fund.

According to Corporation officials, there are about 65 Corporation schools in the city limits (big and small) and whichever among them has playgrounds can be considered for parking. The Corporation could undertake a pilot project on busy pockets like Vilakuthoon, East Masi Street and Vengalakadai Street in association with industrial associations, said Sharmila Siraj. Echoing similar views, Rehamath Syed, a resident of K. K. Nagar said, “Instead of parking on narrow roads and going for shopping, parking in schools/colleges or in multi-level parking slots will be safer,” she added.

MADITSSIA model

The MADITSSIA model in Madurai is a success story. According to the members, the joint venture with the Corporation of Madurai about a decade ago has now come in for appreciation. Apart from the auditorium, they have also rented out space within the campus to a public sector bank. A trust formed for this purpose meets periodically and reviews the functioning and it has a representative from the Corporation. On these lines, the local bodies may identify and rope in trade organisations and chamber of commerce for effective and better use of the land. Instead of leaving the land available in the city to unproductive use, the local bodies, which were starved for funds, could examine the modalities, MADITSSIA members opined.

With 100 wards in pocket, the Worshipful Mayor V.V. Rajan Chellappa and team should take the lead and give a feel of ‘better living' for its residents in all aspects, say tax paying citizens.

மதுரை : மதுரையில் கிடைக்கும் குப்பையை பயன்படுத்தி, மின்சாரம் தயாரிக்கும் திட்டத்தை மாநகராட்சி செயல்படுத்தினால், மின்வெட்டிற்கு தீர்வு கிடைக்கும்.
மதுரை நகரில் நாள் ஒன்றிற்கு 400 டன் திடக்கழிவு (குப்பை) உற்பத்தியாகிறது. விழாக்காலங்களில் 500 டன் வரை குப்பை சேகரிக்கப்படுகிறது.
இவற்றை மாநகராட்சி பொறியாளர்கள் பிரிவு மூலம் சேகரித்து, வெள்ளக்கல் குப்பைக்கிடங்கிற்கு கொண்டு செல்லப்படுகிறது.

திடக்கழிவு மேலாண்மை திட்டத்தை செயல்படுத்த மத்திய அரசின் நகர்ப்புற மேம்பாட்டு அமைச்சகம் மதுரை மாநகராட்சிக்கு ரூ.74.29 கோடிக்கு ஒப்புதல் வழங்கியது. இத்திட்டத்தின் கீழ் நாள் ஒன்றுக்கு 350 டன் குப்பையில்இருந்து உரம் தயாரிக்கவும், மறு
சுழற்சி செய்ய இயலாத குப்பையை விஞ்ஞான முறைப்படி குப்பை கிடங்கில் சேகரிக்கவும் மாநகராட்சி திட்டமிட்டது. இத்திட்டத்தை மதுரை மாநகராட்சி இன்னும்
பயனுள்ள வகையில் மாற்றலாம்.

மதுரையில் கிடைக்கும் "பயோமாஸ்' எனப்படும் இக்கழிவுகளை முறையாகப்பயன்படுத்தினால் இவற்றிலிருந்து மின்சாரம் தயாரிக்கலாம். ஒன்று முதல் ஒன்றரை கிலோ குப்பையை எரித்தால் ஒரு யூனிட் மின்சாரம் தயாரிக்கலாம் என எரிசக்தி துறை நிபுணர்கள் கூறுகின்றனர். எரியக்கூடிய தன்மையுடைய குப்பைகளை, "கேஸிபயர்' மூலம் எரித்து கிடைக்கும் வாயுவை
ஜெனரேட்டரில் செலுத்தி மின்சாரம் தயாரிக்கலாம். அதிகபட்சம் 5 லட்சம் யூனிட் வரை தயாரிக்கலாம். நார்வே, ஸ்வீடன், இத்தாலி போன்ற நாடுகளில் குப்பையில் இருந்து அதிக மின்சாரம் உற்பத்தி செய்யப்படுகிறது. நம்நாட்டில் ஆந்திரா, கர்நாடகா, டில்லி, குஜராத், மகாராஷ்டிரா போன்ற மாநிலங்களில் குப்பையிலிருந்து மின்சாரம் தயாரித்து, உள்ளூர் மின் தேவை பூர்த்தி செய்யப்படுகிறது. ஆனால் தமிழகத்தில் எந்த மாநகராட்சியிலும் குப்பையில் இருந்து மின்சாரம் தயாரிக்கும் திட்டம் செயல்படுத்தப்படவில்லை.

மதுரை முன்னோடியாக மாறலாமே: மதுரை மாவட்டத்தில் நாள் ஒன்றிற்கு மின் உபயோகம் சராசரியாக 50 லட்சம் யூனிட். தற்போது மின் தட்டுப்பாட்டினால் அறிவிக்கப்பட்ட 2 மணி நேர மின்தடையை தவிர அறிவிக்கப்படாமல் 3 மணி நேர மின்தடை உள்ளது. மதுரையில் கோடிக்கணக்கான ரூபாய் செலவழித்து சேகரிக்கப்படும்
குப்பையை மண்ணில் போட்டு மூடி வீணாக்காமல், மின்சாரம் தயாரிக்கும் திட்டத்தை மேயர் ராஜன்செல்லப்பா செயல்படுத்த வேண்டும். இதன் மூலம் மதுரை மாநகர
மக்களின் மின்தேவை தன்னிறைவு ஏற்படுவதுடன், மாநகராட்சிக்கு வருவாயும் கிடைக்கும்.
குப்பையிலிருந்து ஒரு மெகாவாட் மின்சாரம் உற்பத்தி செய்ய ரூ.5 கோடி வரை செலவாகும்.இதற்கான நிதி மற்றும் மானியஉதவிகளை தமிழக அரசின் "டெடா' அளிக்கிறது. மத்திய அரசின் மரபுசாரா எரிசக்தி துறையின் கீழ் செயல்படும் "ஐ.ஆர்.டி.இ.ஏ."வும் கடன் மற்றும் மானியங்களை அளிக்கிறது.கையில் வெண்ணையை வைத்து நெய்க்கு அலையாமல், மாநகராட்சியில் குப்பையில் இருந்து மின்சாரம் தயாரிக்கும் திட்டத்திற்கான சாத்தியக்கூறுகளை ஆராய்ந்து நடவடிக்கை எடுக்க வேண்டும்.

MADURAI: King Thirumalai Nayak, the architect of present day Madurai, was remembered on Tuesday on the occasion of his 429th birth anniversary celebrations here. Thirumalai Nayak, the most notable of the 13 Nayak kings, ruled from 1623 to 1659 and had constructed various important structures that now stand testimony for Madurai.

"More than the architecture, the important decision he had taken to move the capital from Trichy to Madurai during his period, has earned the political significance Madurai enjoys today," says V Vedachalam, an archaeologist from Madurai.

The Nayaks ruled their dynasty from Trichy, unlike the Pandya kings, who held Madurai as their capital. It was Thirumalai Nayak who moved the capital to Madurai during his rule and subsequently constructed various structures like the towers for Meenakshi Amman temple, other halls inside the temple like Astasakthi, Meenakshi Nayakar, he said.

'Pudumandapam' (New Hall) adjacent to the temple is a sculpture treasure itself where the finest of sculptures stand till today. "He was the patron of art and culture during his period and social, religious harmony thrived during his regime," Vedachalam said.

"For an instance, he combined Meenakshi's celestial wedding from Saivaite rite with and Alagar festival of Vaishnavite rite, thus ending the long rivalry between these two rites. Earlier, Alagar festival was held somewhere between February to March, while Meenakshi celestial wedding festival was held in April. He combined both and formed the Chithirai festival, which is celebrated till date," Vedachalam said. Further, these festivals brought both rural and urban communities together thus creating a social harmony among his citizens, he added.

Another significant contribution of Thirumalai Nayak is his palace, which is as significant as the Taj Mahal in North. "The palace is one among the oldest palaces withstanding the time. It is older than most of the palaces in Tamil Nadu, thus leaving an architectural monument of his time," Vedachalam added.

To mark his 429th birth day celebrations, Tamil Nadu Naidu and Nayakkar Association and its youth wing organised day-long celebrations at the Thirumalai Nayak Mahal. They paid floral tributes to his statue situated in the palace premises, as well as his other statue situated in Arapalayam Cross Road.

Later in the afternoon, a mass rally was taken out by these associations from Kattabomman statue to the palace, where they anointed the statue with 21 pots of milk. People from surrounding villages where the particular castes live converged in large numbers. A public meeting was followed by the rally in which AIADMK's organizing secretary, Sulochana Sampath attended.

During the meeting, the associations passed a resolution urging the state government to celebrate the birth anniversary of Thirumalai Nayak as a government festival like earlier, when it was stopped in 1996. They also asked the government to rename the palace road opposite to the mahal, as Thirumalai Nayak road. They also sought the airport to be named after the king and the stone statue in front of palace be replaced with bronze.

As per one report which was published almost 10 years back, more than 270 TMC of water goes into sea from kerala side every year since they are not in a position to utilise it. The above schmeme envisages just diverting 5 TMC of water. Contrary to this report, kerala never accepted this plan and they always claim they are in need of water etc etc., In such a scenario, this project will never be a reality.

On the contrary, kerala may say we accept this plan and you accept our plan for new periyar dam. At the end, neither we will get periyar dam water nor kallar plan water.

மதுரை மாட்டுத்தாவணி, மேலூர், திருமங்கலம், உசிலம்பட்டி, வாடிப்பட்டி, டி.கல்லுப்பட்டியில் ஒழுங்குமுறை விற்பனைக் கூடங்கள் உள்ளன. இவற்றின் திறனை அதிகரிக்க ரூ.பல கோடி நிதி ஒதுக்கீடு பெறப்பட்டது.

ஒழுங்குமுறை கூடங்கள்:
மாட்டுத்தாவணியில் 1500 மெட்ரிக் டன் விளைபொருட்களை பாதுகாக்க முடியும். இங்கு இடமில்லாததால் விரிவுபடுத்த இயலவில்லை. மேலூர் உழவர் சந்தையிலுள்ள கூடத்தை, விநாயகபுரத்தில் 2 ஆயிரம் மெட்ரிக் டன் திறனுடன் அமைக்க இடம் தேர்வு செய்யப்படவுள்ளது. திருமங்கலத்தில் தற்போது ஆயிரம் மெட்ரிக் டன் திறனுள்ள கூடத்தை, ரூ. ஒரு கோடி மதிப்பில் கூடுதலாக 2 ஆயிரம் மெட்ரிக் டன் திறனுள்ள கூடமாக மாற்றப்பட உள்ளது. உசிலம்பட்டியில் தற்போது 2 ஆயிரம் மெட்ரிக் டன் திறனுள்ள கூடம் உள்ளது.
இதனுடன் மேலும் 2 ஆயிரம் மெட்ரிக் டன் விளைபொருளை பாதுகாக்கும் வகையில் நபார்டு உதவியுடன் கட்டடம் கட்டப்பட உள்ளது. வாடிப்பட்டியில் தற்போது 400 மெட்ரிக் டன் கூடம் உள்ளது. இங்கு மேலும் ஆயிரம் மெட்ரிக் டன் கூடம் ரூ. 36 லட்சம் மதிப்பில் கட்டப்படுகிறது. டி.கல்லுப்பட்டியில் தனியார் வாடகை இடத்தில் செயல்படும் கூடத்தை, பேரையூருக்கு மாற்ற நடவடிக்கை மேற்கொள்ளப்படுகிறது. இதன் மூலம் இப்பகுதியில் விளையும் விவசாய பொருட்களை கூடுதலாக பாதுகாக்க இயலும்.
கோல்டு ஸ்டோரேஜ்: மாவட்டத்தில் இரு இடங்களில் "கோல்டு ஸ்டோரேஜ்' (குளிர்சாதன கிடங்கு) அமைக்கப்பட உள்ளது. திருமங்கலம், மதுரை அண்ணாநகர் உழவர்சந்தையில் தலா 25 மெட்ரிக் டன் திறனுடையவையாக அமைக்கப்பட உள்ளன. வாடிப்பட்டியில் விளைபொருட்களை ஏலமிடுவதற்கென "ஏலக் கூடம்' அமைக்கப்பட உள்ளது. மாட்டுத்தாவணியில் உள்ள ஒழுங்குமுறை கூடத்தில் தற்போது இந்திய அளவில் விளைபொருட்களின் விற்பனை விலை விபரத்தை அறியும் வகையில் இன்டர் நெட் உதவியுடன் செயல்படும்
"டிஜிட்டல் டிஸ்பிளே' உள்ளது. திருமங்கலம், உசிலம்பட்டியில், "சாட்டிலைட்' வசதியுடன் "டிஸ்பிளே' அமைக்கப்படும்.
கடன்வசதி: விற்பனைக்குழு செயலாளர் பாஸ்கரராஜ் கூறியதாவது:
விவசாயிகள் தானியங்களை ஒழுங்கு முறை விற்பனை கூடத்தில் 180 நாட்கள் வரை பாதுகாக்கலாம். அவற்றின் மீது பொருளீட்டுக் கடன் வசதி தற்போது ரூ. 2 லட்சம் வரை அதிகரிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. இதற்கு முதல் 15 நாட்களுக்கு வட்டி இல்லை. மீதியுள்ள 165 நாட்களுக்கு 5 சதவீத வட்டி வசூலிக்கப்படும். இதற்கு சிட்டா அடங்கல், ரேஷன் கார்டுகளை கொண்டு வரவேண்டும். வியாபாரிகளும் இங்கு விளைபொருட்களை 90 நாட்கள் வைக்கலாம். அவர்களுக்கு 9 சதவீத வட்டியில் ரூ.ஒரு லட்சம் வரை கடன் வழங்கப்படும், என்றார்.

Good response to collector's proposal for a free library

MADURAI: A free library plan exclusively for aspirants of public service examinations proposed by the district administration has seen a good response with books being contributed by many donors.

District collector U Sagayam had proposed a free library for public service aspirants. The initiative was proposed since many candidates could be seen studying at the Madurai corporation campus and Gandhi museum premises. The candidates who gather at these venues are found studying in groups and share their books. After considering their plight, the district administration proposed a free library for them so that they can get important books. After the appeal, many persons started donating books and the number crossed 1,000 after K Ramesh from Chennai donated 503 books worth Rs 3 lakh. With the number of books increasing, the district administration is searching for more suitable places for the library. Sagayam in his press statement asked the public to donate books to the free library after expressing his gratitude to whoever donated them. Every book donated will be given a receipt and they will be safeguarded in the library. Persons from any field and government officials who have utilised competitive examination books can donate them for the public cause, he had stated.

Jayasingh Gnanadurai, personal assistant to the collector (Agriculture), said the district administration was looking out for a good place to set up the library. "We are looking for a good place with a lot of space to accommodate candidates. A number of places were proposed and will be decided shortly," he said.

K Ramesh over telephone said he came across the appeal a few months back. "I felt like contributing the books because of the various good activities of the district administration reported in many papers. I believed the books will find good use and benefit many aspirants. I donated a section of my personal collections as well," he said. The books sent by Ramesh include more than six sets of encyclopaedia on nature, science, countries, world history, mankind etc. Besides, the collection also includes many valuable books on computers, medicine and other topics.

The agriculture office at the district collectorate collects the books and safeguards them at present. Agriculture Officer Manoranjitham, who is in-charge of the book collection, said after the announcement from the collector, many started donating books. "A doctor has donated a lot of medical books. A woman brought very old Tamil literature books that were her father's collection. She was hesitant to part with the books and insisted she donate them because she felt it was a good initiative," she said.
