Somw news about Vestas RRB in Madurai

...............................Speaking at the occasion, Rakesh Bakshi, Managing Director, Vestas RRB India Ltd has called for more imaginative fiscal sops to popularize renewable sources of energy, which is carbon free and does not lead to global warming. The accelerated depreciation, which is presently granted on equipment and plant for renewable sources of energy, was not adequate, since the initial capital cost for installation is higher in renewable space.

He said that wind energy would continue to drive the renewable energy sector, since India was mostly suited to tap that resource. He however, added that renewable energy sector in India lags considerably behind compared to other countries like Germany and Sweden. Referring to the forward linkages of the wind energy, he added that the entire belt where his company has set up the wind energy plants, off Madurai in Tamil Nadu, has developed. ...............................

Theatres in small cities get facelift; multiplex culture catching on

I was shocked when I went to a theatre in Coimbatore (in Tamil Nadu)—it was as swanky as any Mumbai multiplex. The screen was digital so the picture was really clear, the seats were new and there was caramel popcorn in the canteen! There was even organized parking,” says Arumugam Panneerselvan, a 22-year-old engineering student from Mumbai.
People such as Panneerselvan will likely continue to be shocked—or surprised—by changes in single-screen theatres in cities such as Coimbatore. Some of these are being converted into multiplexes to tap rising demand in such cities as well as tax incentives provided by the local government—box office takings are exempt from tax for up to five years in some cases. Others are being converted, as the theatre Panneerselvan visited likely was, into swankier versions of their former selves, replete with digital projection systems and high-end sound systems.
According to a study by the local arm of audit and consulting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers, India’s film industry was worth Rs8,450 crore in terms of revenue in 2006, and could grow to Rs17,500 crore by 2011. The study also says that India currently has around 12,000 single-screen theatres and 325 multiplexes, and expects the number of multiplexes to increase by 907 by 2011. Meanwhile, the concept of large single-screen theatres that can accommodate more than 1,000 viewers is also catching on.
Small is big: E-City’s new theatre, Talkie Town, at Miyapur in Hyderabad. E-City, which spearheads the Zee group’s cinema exhibition business, aims to bring around 1,000 single-screen theatres into the digital fold. Each such screen conversion can cost Rs15-20 lakh.People in the entertainment business say that most of India’s 12,000 single-screen theatres are located in semi-urban and rural areas. Companies looking to develop such theatres include UFO Moviez, a unit of Apollo International Ltd, E-City Ventures, Cinemax India Ltd, PVR Ltd, and Adlabs Ltd. The cities and towns that will likely see action on this front include Coimbatore and Madurai in Tamil Nadu, Nagpur and Latur in Maharashtra, Gwalior, Indore and Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh, Lucknow, Kanpur and Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh, Guwahati in Assam, Ahmedabad in Gujarat and Mysore in Karnataka.
“Around 80-90% of the movie-going clientele in India goes to the single screens, so we can hardly afford to ignore them. And as most of them are in semi-urban areas, we have to go there,” says Rajesh Mishra, chief executive officer of UFO Moviez.
UFO is looking to bring 900 such screens under the digital fold over the next five years while E-City Ventures, which spearheads the Zee group’s cinema exhibition business, is targeting around 1,000 screens.
“India is still an under-exhibited country—for a population of our size we have only around 12,000 single screens and around 300-350 multiplex screens,” says TimmyKandhari, national leader, media and entertainment practice, at PricewaterhouseCoopers. “That leaves a large part of the country unserviced. We see a lot of growth in the sector, especially in the small cities,” he adds.
Opportunities in entertainment are attracting unexpected entrants such as BPCL
Given India’s population of more than one billion, that is almost 83,000 people being serviced by a single screen.
While Kandhari is reluctant to put a number to the opportunity in the sector, AtulGoel, chief executive of E-City, says that while converting a single screen into a digital one can cost Rs15-20 lakh, converting it into a mulitplex could cost up to Rs1.5 crore.
The opportunity is not limited to “screen conversions” (as industry executives term it), says Goel.
“We are also looking at other opportunities like developing retail malls at many of these sites where there is extra land or commercial parking lots wherever possible,” he adds.
According to Goel, developing malls is “a limited business opportunity” as not many single-screen theatres have enough land.
Most opportunities for this, he says, are in South India where, typically, most theatre complexes have more than one screen. Goel prescribes an ideal site size of 50,000-60,000 sq. ft for a commercially viable retail operation.
The growing opportunity has attracted some unexpected entrants including Bharat Petroleum Corp. Ltd (BPCL), the country’s third largest state-owned oil marketing company.
“As incomes rise and the standards of living rise in the smaller cities, spends on entertainment have begun to rise and people are looking for entertainment options,” says Ashok Sinha, chairman and managing director of BPCL.
“We already have the land and a certain assured footfalls in terms of our existing petrol stations. We think we can persuade these people spend more time at these destinations if we offer them quality entertainment options,” he adds. These theatres will be built at petrol stations on the outskirts of cities, Sinha said.
BPCL plans to roll out two pilot projects by next year to gauge the response to its plans. “The other thing that should keep our theatres in business is that we plan to release the movies on the same day that they are released in the metros,” says Sinha.
Usually, movies are released in smaller cities with a time lag of two to three weeks.
Amid the boom in single-screen theatres, a new format has emerged—the mini-digital single-screen theatre such as Broadway at Navi Mumbai’s Ghansoli area. These theatres have small screens and a capacity of 75-100 people.
“In a place like Ghansoli or Bhiwandi, a 75-seater is a good business option and you can a build a theatre on 2,000-3,000 sq. ft of space. With two new movies running, the chances of losing money on the theatres is minimized,” says Laxmichand Shah, who has built two theatres in Bhiwandi and Ghansoli

Happy to see APOLLO , PVR , E-city , UFE-Moviex etc., are eying MADURAI to setup their multiplexes in addition to ADLABS and CINEMAX

Transport minister K N Nehru on Saturday said the Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) across the State would soon be computerised.

Addressing the gathering at the inauguration of the office of brake inspector at Thiruverumbur here, he said the computerisation works executed at a cost of Rs 2.5 crore would be completed in three months.

Detailing the projects being taken up by the Transport Department, he said unit offices were established at 10 places across the state at a cost of Rs 94 lakh after the DMK assumed power.

Unit offices at places like Thondiarpet, Triplicane, Perundurai, Sankagiri and Marthandam were also upgraded as regional transport offices.

This apart, new buildings were also sanctioned for Tiruchy, Tirupur, Salem, Madurai, Tiruvannamalai, Tiruchengode and Pudukkottai and works have commenced at a cost of Rs 15.45 crore.

RTOs at Salem and Tirupur have also been bifurcated for better administration.

Admitting that 92 percent of road accidents occur due to negligence of drivers, Nehru said testing tracks would be laid at Pudukkottai, Cuddalore, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Kovilpatti.

Initiatives were also taken to fill vacancies in the department, he said.

In Kumbakonam division, 3215 buses were being operated in 1649 routes, he said, adding that 383 new routes were introduced and 466 routes extended after the DMK came to power.

Transport Commissioner C P Singh was present. Nehru also inaugurated a veterinary pharmacy at Keezhamullakudi, a community hall at Pappakurichi Kattur and renovated the meeting hall in Thiruverumbur union office.

“Education system should necessarily relate to requirements of industry”

MADURAI: The education system had not been able to relate to the requirements of industry, which lead to unemployability.

Some courses being taught in educational institutions were designed over 30 years ago, the Industries Commissioner and Director of Industries and Commerce, Rajeev Ranjan, said here on Friday.

He was addressing the inaugural session of a two-day State-level convention on industrial collaborators and community colleges of Tamil Nadu organised by Indian Centre for Research and Development of Community Education (ICRDCE), Madurai District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association (MADITSSIA) and Tamil Nadu Small and Tiny Industries Association (TANSTIA).

Inputs must come from the industry as the same problem existed with formal education also. “Tamil Nadu has the largest number of engineering colleges in the country. Over 6.5 lakh engineering students graduate every year in India. Despite having the infrastructure, a mismatch existed leading to industries facing a manpower crunch as students lack soft skills,” he said.

To bridge the gap, collaborations were required between industry and educational institutions and such conventions were a step in the right direction, he said.

Government alone could not cope up with the surging demand for skilled labour and public-private partnerships were needed.

Mr. Ranjan said that about one crore people came out of the stagnant agriculture sector and entered the job market every year. They should be absorbed into the manufacturing sector.

B.T. Bangera, Managing Director, Hi-Tech Arai, said that the country’s biggest problem was how to sustain its present level of high growth.

“Corporates have a responsibility towards the society and must give a part of their profits back to it,” he said.

Director of ICRDCE, Xavier Alphonse, said that the response of the industry to community colleges system was positive.

President of TANSTIA, A. Shanmugavelayuthan, said that almost every industry in Chennai faced manpower shortage despite a huge population.

President of Federation of Associations of Small Industries of India, S. Rajagopal, said that the federation was ready to sign a memorandum of understanding with ICRDCE at national level.

Good news for the people from southern districts. Expecting more good news in the form of super speciality hospital with medical college planned by Mr. Pugalagiri of Vadamalayan hospitals and the Nadar communities.

With Madurai attracting nearly 2.5 lakh foreigners in just 10 months of this year, there is a good chance of making Madurai a medical tourism hub. Already leading hospitals in Madurai are attracting patients from different parts of the world.

Yes VEERAN ! Initially they had planned several places including KANYAKUMARI from MADURAI ... But now I don't know how KANYAKUMARI was plucked by TRIVANDRUM ...... First of all - the efforts on HELI-TOURISM was planned byTamilnadu tourism dept., But a kerala town is taking part in it....Shet ! TRIVANDRUM is soclose to Kanyakumari and visitors opt cars to reach it But MADURAI is the suit place for heli-tourism to Kanyakumari......Maybe they thought in this point - the Places between Kanyakumari and Trivandrum are so cool to visit - Mountains, waterfalls,Indian Ocean, Arabian sea , Hills & valleys etc., But the region between Madurai & Kanyakumari lacks it......Anyway If they start it between MDU-KDKL by atleast this FEB-2008 , It'll be better.

More agri-clinics, business needed

MADURAI: The concept of Agri-clinics and Agri-business centres has helped farmers in Madurai get timely expert services on cropping practices, technology dissemination and crop protection from pests/diseases.

Scope exists for establishing one such unit in each block of the district, according to the Potential Linked Credit Plan prepared by National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) for Madurai district for 2007-08.

Launched by the Union Ministry of Agriculture in 2002, the scheme is implemented by National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management (MANAGE) — an autonomous society established to assist State and Central Governments in effective management of their agricultural extension services — and NABARD. Voluntary Association for People Service, a Madurai-based non-governmental organisation, is one of the Centre approved bodies for providing the training programmes free of cost.

It conducts programmes for unemployed agriculture graduates from Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Employability

Besides dissemination of market trends and providing prices of various crops and clinical services for animal health, the centres provide self-employment for technically trained personnel.

Assistant General Manager of NABARD, R. Srinivasan, said: “Farmers need quality inputs such as certified seeds, fertilisers and pesticides along with help in irrigation techniques and marketing.”

The extension services of the Government, which provided these inputs, were not adequate to cover the entire farming sector. “The gap is being filled by Agri clinics,” he said.

Apart from contributing towards reduction in immigration of labour to urban areas, these units also bring about a market-led agricultural cropping pattern, he added.

S.A. Arul, nodal officer for VAPS training centre, said, “We have trained 413 graduates in Tamil Nadu since 2004, of whom 170 have set up units. In Madurai district, 108 have received training so far of which 50 established centres.”

P. Subramanian, technical consultant, said that the training included interactions with banks, scientists, veterinarians, successful ‘agripreneurs,’ and field visit to research farms and stations. They would also be taken to dairies, poultry units, vermi compost units and cold storages, he said.

Government Rajaji Hospital to install display boards

MADURAI: The Government Rajaji Hospital has planned to install display boards at all wards to make people aware of the ban order on smoking in public places, according to its Deputy Superintendent, S.M. Sivakumar here on Saturday.

Super speciality hospital

It may be noted that as a super speciality hospital, GRH on an average receives around 8,000 outpatients every day with more than 2,000 persons as inpatients and there is every chance of the premises getting polluted.

Successful implementation

Recently, the hospital administration displayed boards in all the wards emphasising the prohibition order in force for plastic products on the premises. It helped people to know about the ban.

Though an order for smoking was in force not many knew about it. Hence, a display board would help the administration effectively curb smoking inside the premises, he said.

Additional facilities

Dr. Sivakumar said that the Department of Cardiology would soon get a 3-D Echo Colour Doppler equipment worth Rs.77 lakh, a treadmill worth Rs.13 lakh, a Holter monitor worth Rs.6 lakh and two ventilators worth Rs.12 lakh, for which supply orders had already been sent to the companies, he added.

Very useful device

“A Holter monitor, termed as an ambulatory electrocardiography device, is a portable device that helps in effectively monitoring the electrical activity of the heart for 24 hours or more. Its extended recording period is useful for observing occasional cardiac arrhythmias that will be difficult to identify in a shorter period of time,” said S. Palanichamy, Professor and Head, Department of Cardiology.

Nice to see that Madurai is getting a good share of investment under the non-metro airports development. Finally AAI is considering the potential of Madurai airport. When the above projects get completed by 2010-11, Madurai airport would boast of good infrastructure.
