This project is another ghost project like our vandiyur lake project and will never take off. During the world tamil conference time (in early 80's), MGR announced setting up of Tamil University in tanjore and World Tamil Academy in Madurai. Only 30 years have passed and nothing moved.

2 engg colleges, 7 polytechnics, 11 arts colleges to come up in TN CM's boost for higher education

Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today announced that two engineering colleges, seven polytechnic colleges and 11 arts and science colleges would be started in Tamilnadu soon.

Making an announcement under Rule 110 in the Assembly, she said 11 arts and colleges were started in the academic year 2011-12 by her government to ensure that students in rural areas continued their studies after finishing higher secondary education.

'In line with this, this year, too, the government has decided to start new engineering colleges, polytechnic institutes and arts and science colleges,' she said.

Giving specific details, the Chief Minister said a government engineering college would be started at Chengipatti in Thanjavur block in Thanjavur district and another such institution would be set up at Chettikarai village in Dharmapuri block.

'A total of seven polytechnic colleges will be started at Sri Rangam in Tiruchirapalli district, Gandharvakottai in Pudukottai district, Sankarapuram in Villupuram district, Perundurai in Erode district, Ariyalur in Ariyalur district, Oothankarai in Krishnagiri district and Jolarpet in Vellore district,' she said.

She added that co-education arts and science colleges would be started at Edapadi in Salem district, Kanyakumari in Kanyakumari district, Vedachandur in Dindigul district, Modakurichi in Erode district, Thirumangalam in Madurai district, Thiruvottiyur in Thiruvallur district, Paramakudi in Ramanathapuram district, Kadayanallur in Tirunelveli district, Arupukkotai in Virudhunagar district, Nagapattinam in Nagapattinam district and Arakkonam in Vellore district.

Jayalalithaa has been giving special focus on school and higher education ever since she came to power in May last year.

A few months back, she announced that 210 Panchayat Union and Municipality middle schools in the State would be upgraded as high schools in the academic year 2011-12. She said that 3,550 graduate teacher jobs also would be created.

According to an official release, the Chief Minister allocated more than Rs 400 crore towards upgradation of facilities in over 700 schools.

As many as 710 schools would be upgraded in 2011-12. The Chief Minister directed creation of 3,550 vacancies for teachers besides others. This would cost the exchequer Rs 113.38 crore per year, the release said.

“It flowed for 7 to 8 months till 1965 and now for 3 to 4 months”

Court orders alone cannot prevent environmental degradation unless they are coupled with an emergence of a mass movement for educating the people on the need to leave behind a green planet for posterity, said D. Hariparanthaman, Judge, Madras High Court, here on Wednesday.

Delivering presidential address at a seminar organised by Madras High Court Bench Advocates Association (MBHAA) on ‘Conserving River Vaigai,' the judge said that lack of environmental education was one of the prime reasons behind the apathy faced by nature at present.

The judge appreciated MBHAA for organising a seminar aimed at a social cause. He listed a number of cases in which the Supreme Court had taken proactive steps to safeguard the environment besides formulating new concepts, principles and doctrines such as ‘polluters must pay.'

C.P. Rajkumar, a doctor by profession and also an environmentalist associated with Vaigai Association for Nature and Mountain Ranges (VANAM), a small time private organisation based in Theni district, was the resource person for the seminar.

According to him, the Vaigai dam was one of the prime sources of water for people living in Madurai, Dindigul, Theni, Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram districts. It was fed by water diverted from Periyar dam and River Vaigai which originated in the catchment areas at Meghamalai in the Western Ghats.

“While the water from Periyar dam accounted for 85 per cent, only 15 per cent was supplied by the Vaigai. In case in the future, the Periyar dam had to be decommissioned, then the people of five districts would have to depend only on 15 per cent of water received from the Vaigai,” he cautioned.

Stating that Vaigai is dying slowly but surely every day, he pointed out that the river which was flowing for seven to eight months a year till1965 was at present flowing only for three to four months. He attributed a number of reasons for such a pitiable situation including large scale encroachments upon the Meghamalai.

He said that only 269 sq.km. had been declared as Meghamalai Wildlife Sanctuary as of now and a notification on extending the sanctuary to 628 sq.km. was not issued on April 16 as expected. Extending the sanctuary would put an end to poaching and consequently preserve the forest area, he added.

Meghamalai was home to some of the rarest of animals, including the Lion Tailed Macaque, Nilgiri Tahr and Flying Squirrel, Dr. Rajkumar said and stressed the need for appointing an Indian Forest Service officer to administer the hills rather than deputing a promotee State Service officer.

Claiming that there had been no direct recruitment to the post of Rangers in the Forest Department in the last twenty years, he said that it was one of the most neglected departments.

It required young and energetic officers who could dedicate themselves to the cause of preservation of nature.

“Unless Meghamalai is protected, there won't be any water in the Vaigai which is already in the ‘Intensive Care Unit.' So, it all depends on us as to whether we are going to let it die or wake up from our slumber and take some proactive steps to save the pristine forests along with their flora and fauna,” he concluded.

Time to wake-up.. Meghamalai needs to be protected to save Vaigai..!! to both DMK & ADMK Govts. who think of only the northern TN.. If Govts. were serious in planning things for Megamalai, by this time, It would ve been an another Hill-resort place for TN like Kodaikanal, Ooty or Yercaud..!!

VC calls for a meeting of all study centre coordinators

The distance education wing of Madurai Kamaraj University here is to introduce MBA in aviation management.

Also, the varsity is identifying a private hospital in Madurai for tie-up to launch MBA in Hospital Management under distance education mode.

Various proposals of the Directorate of Distance Education of MKU have received ‘green signal' from the new Vice-Chancellor Kalyani Mathivanan who reviewed the academic and administrative matters of the university's distance education wing in the last two days.

A. Thanikodi, Director of Distance Education, MKU, told The Hindu on Wednesday that the university is in the process of identifying a few institutions which have expertise in the field of aviation management so that MKU can finally select one institution for launching the two-year MBA (Aviation Management) course from coming academic year.

“We had a positive discussion with the new VC on Monday and she is bearing a positive frame of mind. The Vice-Chancellor gave approval for introducing 27 new courses through distance education of which the MBA programmes in aviation management and hospital management have good potential for student enrolment,” the Director has said.

According to him, the VC has called for a meeting of coordinators of all study centres of MKU in the State on April 23 and the coordinators of 37 study centres were asked to come to Madurai for the meeting.

The curriculum for new courses will soon be finalised by the Board of Studies and the Academic Council.

Dr. Thanikodi has said that the financial position of Directorate of Distance Education was also reviewed at the Monday meeting and “the Vice-Chancellor has expressed satisfaction on the availability of funds.”

The institutions in private sector for collaboration will be decided by the university through official procedures based on infrastructure availability. The new courses will be offered from June session of new academic year.

Various administrative issues of the Directorate came up for a discussion and the existing revenue sharing pattern with private institutions/individuals is set to be revamped. More focus will also be given to enhance the credibility and image of the distance education wing and its courses.

This year's Chithirai festival at the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple here will have an added attraction – the band of Indo-Tibetan Border Police.

The band will perform near the east tower of the temple between 7 p.m. and 8.30 p.m. from April 27 to May 3. The event is organised by the Recruits Training Centre of ITBP, Iluppaikudi, in Sivaganga district, in association with the administration of Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple.

According to R. K. Pataria, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Recruits Training Centre, the band display will be part of the efforts to create an awareness of the service of ITBP to the nation during its golden jubilee celebration, which concludes on October 24. It will also help the ITBP to identify itself with the customs and traditions of the local population.

The ITBP brass band, according to a press release, was raised in 1973. It has been participating in Republic Day parades since 1977. The band has won top honours in all-India police band competitions.

already during MK time, he brought a bill and as per that, world tamil academy is supposed to come under tanjore tamil university. the land which is located near madurai law college and commerical tax offices measuring some 15/16 acres were to be transferred and registered in the name of tamil university. I cant recollect what all the govt mentioned that time. but nothing moved and even somebody went to the court asking for the status of the project. now this govt wants to do something. let us see whether they really do or another tiger coming, tiger coming story.

திருப்பரங்குன்றத்தில் முருகப்பெருமானின் அறுபடை வீடுகளில் முதற்படைவீடாக சுப்பிரமணியசுவாமி திருக்கோயில் அமைந்துள்ளது. இக்கோயிலுக்கு ஆண்டு முழுவதும் லட்சக்கணக்கான பக்தர்கள் வருகின்றனர்.

இப்பணிகளின் ஒருபகுதியாக, கோயில் அருகே வனப்பகுதியில் அரியவகையான நான்கு வெள்ளை மயில்கள் உள்பட நூற்றுக்கணக்கான மயில்கள் வசித்து வருகின்றன. இவற்றிற்கு போதுமான இரை இல்லாமல் இருப்பிடத்தைவிட்டு பல்வேறு பகுதிகளுக்குச் சென்று வருகின்றன.

இதனைத் தடுக்கும் பொருட்டு தற்போது பூங்கா அமைக்கும் பணியோடு மயில்கள் தண்ணீர் குடிக்க இயற்கையான முறையில் குளம் அமைக்கவும், இரைக்காக தானிய மேடையும் அமைக்கவும் நடவடிக்கை எடுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

மயில்களை பொதுமக்கள் பார்ப்பதற்கான வசதியை ஏற்படுத்தவும் நடவடிக்கை எடுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

இதுகுறித்து நிர்வாக அதிகாரி இரா.செந்தில்வேலவன் கூறியது:
