It's good to see that this SIPCOT is not thrown to the dust due to the government change. Let the genuine land acquisition take place and let the work start on building the infrastructure there. Hopefully they build this place closer to the railway line.

Earlier proposal was to build it on both sides of the railway line and got rejected for the same reason. This time, let us hope they plan it on one side.

I hope government doesnt just stop with acquiring land and put fence. If they are really serious about south TN development they have to encourage the industries with much more incentive than what is being given now if they put up industry in south TN be it in madurai or tirunelveli. Just acquiring land wont serve any purpose. Take the example of IT park near pandikovil. Building is ready but no takers. If Govt doesnt give incentive why should IT company come to madurai IT Park or Tirunelveli IT park? They will stick to madras even if it is going to cost little more. Same will happen for this industrial estate also and companies will continue to set up their factories near madras area only. So what is really needed is big incentive to those who are ready to come and set up industries.

Ananth, a big incentive is already given to eight southern districts. Videocon occupied a big space in Manamadurai SIPCOT and good occupancy is there overall in Manamadurai and Nilakottai SIPCOTs. But road infra is bad in every SIPCOT in TN they say. But industrial complexes occupancy is good. IT we know what happened though.

dear mk, i knew incentives are given for industries coming up in southern parts. But if you look into how many co's which have come up in the last 4 years after the incentive announcement practically nothing except videocon. whatever U see in manamadurai and nilakottai are old industries except few. That is why, i am emphasising this additional benefits or incentive factor

U just compare how many big industries have come up in north TN and south TN in the last 4 years that is after incentive announcement also, U will find the gap. I am not starting a region-wise argument. All I am saying is, the incentives whatever announced are not enough to encourage big industries. One big automobile factory can lead to 300 ancillary units. We need to get something like that alteast one then ancillary units will come and growth will take place. For such big industry to come to south TN, u need much more incentive than what is offered atpresent. This is what I am trying to say

Madurai district inching closer to filariasis-free status

With no fresh cases reported in the past three years, Madurai district is well on the path of eradicating filariasis (called as ‘yaanai kaal' in Tamil).

A sustained surveillance by entomologists and health officials in pockets prone to filariasis has yielded good results as not a single fresh case has been reported in the district.

The only village where persons with filariasis are living is Puliampatti in T. Kallupatti block and officials have taken steps to cut the vector transmission.

“We have carried out mass drug administration in Puliampatti on April 29. This is the only pocket endemic to vector borne filariasis,” Latha Freeda Joan, District Malaria Officer, told The Hindu on Wednesday. She said that intensive campaign has been taken up across the district as part of the State Government's drive against the disease. While the total population in Puliampatti is 1,079, the public health enumerators had identified 755 as ‘target population' for mass drug administration and free tablets were given for persons from 2 to 60 years of age. “Filariasis is not a life threatening disease and it will not cripple a person if specific treatment is given early. There is a surgical option too available for serious cases,” Ms. Joan said.

After tablets were given in Puliampatti last Sunday, health officials carried out door-to-door verification to identify those who missed the coverage. It was found that only one family did not get the tablets and it was covered on Wednesday. The District Malaria Officer expressed confidence that Madurai will be filariasis-free soon as the micro filarial rate is now nil and fresh cases have not been reported in the last three years. “The target of Indian Government is to eradicate filariasis by 2015 and the World Health Organisation's target for complete eradication is 2020. Our district is well on that path.”

According to her, there are 16 affected persons in Pulaimpatti who are now being motivated to go for surgery but somehow they are hesitant.

Trauma Care Centre to be ready soon

Operation theatres in Trauma Care Centre of the Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) here will be ready by the end of this month.

Fumigation of theatres and the entire premises started on Wednesday as part of mandatory checks to be done before performing surgeries in operation theatres.

“The microbiology department of Madurai Medical College will have to certify that the new facility is pest free. We have to get three reports stating that the bacteria or pest presence is negative after the structural fumigation is done,” Dean A. Edwin Joe told The Hindu on Thursday.

Fumigation would have to be done thrice before the operation theatres could be put to use. The entire process should be over in the next three weeks and preparations are under way to ensure that the entire trauma care complex is fully functional by May-end.

Dr. Joe said that the first priority was to start performing surgeries in the emergency operation theatre situated in the ground floor. Medical equipment and other infrastructure for the trauma care building were being mobilised. While the emergency operation theatre was on the ground floor, there were two more theatres on the first and second floors for elective surgeries. Focus was also given for surgeries and treatment to be provided to patients under the Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme, he said.

Meanwhile, the hospital authorities are also geared up for the complete shifting of Orthopaedics Department from GRH main building to the Trauma Care Centre. “We are ready for shifting anytime now.

Since the government too wants the orthopaedics department to be shifted to a new building, the exercise will be carried out after the fumigation/culture reports,” V.Pugazhendhi, Head of Department of Orthopaedics, GRH, said.

Already, out-patients were being attended to at the new complex and the moment operation theatres were certified for safety norms, the entire trauma care/orthopaedic surgeries would begin in the trauma care centre.

Free clinic for elders in Madurai

An exclusive free clinic for senior citizens is getting ready in Madurai. Taking advice from the International Federation of Ageing — Voluntary Global Forum for Elders Rights — a 42-year-old tailoring teacher in Madurai, B. Muralidharan, and his wife Sumathi, 37, are engaged in building this clinic with donations from their neighbours and friends.

The couple runs an oldage home at Nagamalai Pudhukottai neighbourhood with 35 inmates, three of them above 95. “We have decided to arrange a vehicle, which would pick up sick elders in the neighbourhood to the clinic for free,” said the couple.

Explaining the project Muralidharan said, “Many elders need doorstep treatment. It’s tough for some of them to go to hospitals using public transport.

This clinic would provide them the access to healthcare with free transportation.” He mentioned that loneliness is the major ‘health’ problem faced by many elders and this clinic would double up as a meeting place for them.

Ms Sumathi said that two doctors who heard about their initiative have agreed to work in the clinic for free. “So far we have spent `7 lakh for the construction. We need Rs 15 lakh to complete this clinic.

To start with, basic health check-up and counselling for 50 elders will be provided everyday,” she said. She said the hospital premises would be elderly friendly with textured flooring, hand rails and an airy environment. “We have planted saplings to make our clinic green,” she added.

Tamil Nadu senior citizens association general secretary S.M. Chellaswamy, 75, said that the government should come forward to open similar clinics in remote places.

“Though Muralidharan and Sumathi have started this clinic in a small way, this model will get popular soon,” he said.

Thoppur was the better choice but because it was finalised by different govt, they changed the location to MMC. Madurai is suffering. Thoppur one was supposed to be a 50+ acre campus for future expansion. Here the built up area is going to be less than 6 acres. This is not going to be super speicality hospital but another extended wing of Rajaji hospital like the one which has come up now. That is it. What a pity state of affair

The Tiruparankundram ECO Park came in today Dinamalar. Park landscape is good. Same is the case for the park surrounding the Tirumalai Nayak Palace and surrounding the Meenakshi Amman temple. It will be good as long as they don't let the public in. Hope they will continue the same.

A master plan to wipe out mosquitoes in the city

CRME to submit a model plan for mosquito eradication in Madurai city

A master plan for mosquito eradication in Madurai is ready and it will be submitted to the Corporation authorities soon.

The Centre for Research in Medical Entomology (CRME) here, a premier laboratory of the Indian Council of Medical Research focusing on vector-borne diseases such as dengue, malaria and chikungunya, has prepared a ‘feasible plan with practical solutions' to reduce mosquito menace to a substantial extent in the Madurai Corporation area.

“We will be submitting a background paper on mosquito breeding scenario in our Corporation area to the authorities concerned in the next few days. The master plan, we are confident, will become a model for other cities and towns,” B. K. Tyagi, Director, CRME, told The Hindu on Sunday. He said that the plan had incorporated scientific documentation of mosquito breeding habitats and how to eliminate breeding sources/disease transmission in the city and surrounding areas.

Dr. Tyagi stressed that the objective of evolving a specific plan was to reduce mosquito menace and thereby the burden of vector borne diseases. A team of scientists and entomologists of CRME had worked in great detail for preparing the master plan.

“We are offering practical solutions based on historical evidence. With the administrative will of Corporation officials and public health authorities, certainly we can tackle mosquito menace in Madurai city,” he said.

The anti-mosquito master plan calls for multi-sectoral cooperation of various departments, including Public Works Department, agriculture and health. All the stakeholders will have to work in tandem.

Dr. Tyagi informed that the plan adequately focused on critical aspects like waste disposal, recycling of waste and preventing water stagnation in residential areas which was very important for prevention of mosquito-borne diseases. The infrastructure required for implementing the plan was also explained in the background paper.

“We will try to impress upon the Madurai Corporation authorities to implement our model and CRME too will participate in its implementation. The proposed master plan will also be submitted to the Directorate of Public Health of Government of Tamil Nadu,” he said. Once the Madurai model is studied in detail, it can be replicated in other places.

Smart cards for pensioners launched in Madurai district

MADURAI: For Pushpam and other 146 beneficiaries of Sivarakottai village, social security schemes like old-age pension, destitute pension and widow pension, the concept of biometric smart cards is new, as they were told that they can use the cards to draw their pension money directly, unlike the earlier method of getting them despatched through the post offices.

They can also draw the necessary amount and keep the rest as savings instead of receiving Rs 1,000 at one go.

Though they are yet to get familiarised to the cards, the idea has thrilled many as they need not tip the postman anymore. Many of them agreed that they used to pay Rs 20 to 30 to the postman as tip out of Rs 1,000 pension they get from the government.

"We are going to be given some card and they told us it has got lot of benefits," Seethammal, a villager said.

On Tuesday, Madurai district collector U Sagayam officially commenced the distribution of biometric smart cards through Canara Bank, in 22 villages and Sivarakottai was one among the beneficiaries.

K M Lakshmipathy Kumar, deputy general manager of Canara Bank told media persons that the bank has identified 160 villages with a population above 2,000 in Madurai district. Through this method, all the social security schemes from the state government will be distributed through the bank with a business correspondent selected from the native village. The beneficiaries will collect their old age, widow and destitute pensions.

"Out of these 160 villages, 29,000 beneficiaries have been identified and accounts were opened for 20,000. On Tuesday, smart cards were distributed to 4,000 beneficiaries in 22 villages.

Before the end of June 2012, 100 villages will be covered and by July end all the 157 villages will be distributed with the smart cards," Kumar mentioned.

Sagayam, who addressed the beneficiaries, said that the smart card system will be beneficial to them. He urged the revenue officials to implement the social security measures wholeheartedly and identify all the deserving persons from the villages.

Rooftop solar panels for MKU buildings on anvil

VC to submit proposals to Union Ministry for funding

Solar mission is being aggressively pursued in Madurai Kamaraj University and plans are afoot to set up roof top solar panels in at least 10 buildings on the campus.

The ‘go solar' drive has been taken up following a keen interest shown by the Vice-Chancellor, Kalyani Mathivanan, who has asked the School of Energy, Environment and Natural Resources to prepare proposals for the solar energy project.

“Our university is now focusing on ‘go green' campaign. As a part of that initiative, the Vice-Chancellor had a meeting with us in which she asked us to prepare proposals to be forwarded to the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy,” A. Sundaram, Head and Chairperson, School of Energy, Environment and Natural Resources, told The Hindu on Saturday.

He said that the university would be ready with proposals in the next 10 days for submission to the Ministry to get Government subsidy.

Prof. Sundaram informed that the varsity was planning to cover about ten buildings and generate at least 10 KV of power through solar panels. “The solar panels will be north facing so that radiation can be tapped to the maximum. Total cost of this solar project will be around Rs.30 lakh,” he added.

A one KV solar plant with eight solar panels was inaugurated on the MKU campus last month by the Union Minister of State in Prime Minister's Office V. Narayanasamy during a three-day international workshop and conference on renewable energy.

“Once the university starts tapping solar energy in a big way, it will definitely lead to substantial savings in electricity bill. The life of solar panel is 20 years and it requires only periodical maintenance,” Prof. Sundaram said.

‘Go Green' panel formed

The Vice-Chancellor of Madurai Kamaraj University, Kalyani Mathivanan, on Sunday said that she had formed a special committee to prepare proposals for the ‘Go Green' initiatives on the varsity campus.

It was said that members of the special committee will soon come out with proposals for various projects that could be undertaken on the university campus, including setting up of solar panels to tap solar energy. “I am following this closely and the committee will recommend some proposals. These proposals will be submitted to funding agencies such as the University Grants Commission for assistance. Also, they will be taken to the attention of State Government,” the VC said.

The VC said she had no idea of submitting a proposal to have solar panels to the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.
