Thanks for sharing this MukeshWorld.

I think the future of Madurai growth lies along the ringroad near the Airport area..
with Rudradev township, Sahara Homes, Maangalya developers township, pearl infrastructure township & IT Park and the govt proposed SIPCOT industrial park SEZ, it would be bustling with activity few years down the lane..

Even few years back i was expecting future growth along the ring road closer to airport. The real surprise to me is growth along the MDU-Trichy NH, which hasn't materialised. Artificial price rise due to the developments such as Integrated bus stand, High court bench, Integrated market complex etc could have been the reason.

Ring road has been a good example on what a 27 kms of new road can do. We have half the ring now, connection north to south on one side. The road connecting west to south will be ready by March 2008. I hope they begin the work on the remaining stretch before the end of this year. If they get completed, that will be nearly 60 kms of 4 lane road surrounding the city.

The current NH to Othakadai will soon become SH, and the new alignment NH road between Othakadai and Pandi Koil could become new corridor of growth. The growth on the western part of the city will be based on how well the new bypass between Sholavandhan and Kappalur is further linked to the airport by access roads. Also Madurai-Theni NH neads to be 4 laned, currently its narrow with lots of bends.

Chennai, Sept 17: With the state getting a steady flow of investments, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today said his government was committed to providing world class infrastructure to support the growth of industry in general and the information and communication technology (ICT) industry in particular.

Inaugurating the seventh edition of CII’s ICT event ‘Connect 2007’, he said skill development was a priority area for the government and called upon the CII to partner with the state government for creating a model of inclusive development where access to jobs would not be the preserve of a few privileged institutions of those belonging to the elite groups but would be open to all.

“I am acutely conscious that the human resources of the state have to be further strengthened. On my initiative, the Union government is setting up an Indian Institute of Information Technology for Design and Manufacturing near Chennai. I have also requested the Centre to set up an additional IIT at Madurai, IISER at Tiruchirappalli and an IIM at Coimbatore,” he said.

The government had taken special steps to strengthen the system of technical education in the state, he added.

The State government is creating “corridors of excellence” all over Tamil Nadu to achieve inclusive growth. The initiatives are expected to take off within a month.

Talking to The Hindu on Monday on the sidelines of Connect 2007, Industries Secretary Shaktikanta Das said: “We are committed to developing every region in Tamil Nadu and not those located in and around Sriperumbudur. We are creating corridors of excellence in three phases. The first one runs from Chennai to Hosur through Vellore. The second one stretches from Coimbatore to Erode and between Madurai and Tuticorin.”

The first stage involves setting up of IT and industrial parks, followed by creation of other infrastructure. It would take at least three-five years to realise the benefits. As of now, the project is going on the right track. The setting up of SEZ in Virudhunagar is meant to spread the growth throughout the Madurai-Tuticorin region,” he said.

Chief Secretary L. K. Tripathy said the government was taking a number of initiatives to develop Tier-II cities.

Developing Tier-II cities does not mean creating IT hubs alone; we will create an eco-system for proper functioning of the automobiles, garments and leather and textile sectors. Madurai and Coimbatore is ready for take-off. Within a month, bhoomi puja will be held in other cities, including Salem and Tiruchi. Thereafter, the project will be flagged off,” he said.

New Delhi: Delhi and Greater Mumbai have been ranked as the leading cities in India in terms of the growth potential for economic and social development, according to a rating of 48 Indian cities by consultant Ernst & Young. The firm developed a rating methodology that assesses several cities on their potential for economic, urban and social development.
“The traditional method of evaluating city potential on the basis of limited parameters, such as population and per capital income, has outlived its utility,” claimed Ganesh Raj, partner and head of real estate practice at E&Y.
Evaluated on five indices, including prosperity, governance, business environment, infrastructure and quality of life, the rating ranks the cities, all of which are covered by the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.
According to a summary of the report, Delhi and Greater Mumbai have been ranked A++, while Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata are A+ cities. Pune and Ahmedabad get an A.
Surat, Chandigarh, Nagpur, Vadodara, Vishakapatnam and Jaipur get B++ cities ranking. Coimbatore, Lucknow, Bhopal figure in the list of B cities while Madurai, Patna and Srinagar have been categorized as C cities. Delhi is the leader in the infrastructure index with Chennai and Hyderabad faring well. Visakhapatnam and Nagpur have been ranked highly on both business environment and infrastructure index.
The Ficci-Ernst&Young report also undertook a survey of leading investors that suggested they believe that more than $5 billion would be deployed into Indian real estate over the next three years, with 20% saying the deployment would be over $20 billion.
Close to 80% of the respondents believe that in the short to mid-term (three to five years), India as an investment destination is ‘excellent´ or ‘very good´ compared with other Asian markets such as China, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand.
Also, more than 50% of respondents believe that high growth trajectory (year-on-year growth of 25%) would continue for the next two to three years

No, foundation stone has not been laid yet.

I feel ELCOT has no clear vision for developing TIDEL parks in Tier II cities. Earlier ELCOT and TN govt had announced that after CBE TIDEL park, the same would be developed in Madurai followed by Trichy and so on. It seems now that they are just following CM's schedule, where ever he goes they lay the foundation stone there. Foundation stone in CBE was laid in March and in Tirunelveli few months back and still nothing has happened.

We can expect foundation stone to be laid in MDU next month, as CM is coming to the city.

But after laying of foundation stone, ELCOT simply leave it.No progress or further follow ups.

As American recession of IT industries are catching up, there may not be requirement of tidel parks in other tier II cities

Paramount airways plans for a $40-60 million MRO facility in Madurai

Quote:
Madurai-based regional airline Paramount Airways Pvt. Ltd is in talks with aircraft makers Boeing Co. and Airbus Industrie to buy six wide-bodied planes with an aim of launching international operations by fiscal 2011.

The airline, which has so far restricted itself to southern India with an all-Embraer fleet of five leased aircraft, also plans to establish a new aircraft maintenance facility in Madurai in collaboration with Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Empresa Brasileira de Aeronáutica SA at an estimated $40-60 million (Rs161-242 crore) investment.

A new company will be floated for the maintenance, repair, overhaul (MRO) facility to take care of Paramount’s fleet of planes. The MRO is likely to be part of the agreement with Embraer for the 40 additional planes that Paramount plans to order for delivery by 2011.
http://www.livemint.com/2007/09/2001...ly-abroad.html

Quote:
The Madurai-based Paramount Airways is in talks with aircraft manufacturer Embraer for setting up the first maintenance, repair and overhaul centre in the Asia-Pacific region in India, the Managing Director, Mr M. Thiagarajan, said on Wednesday. “We are in discussion with Embraer and could sign the deal as early as next month. The project which involves an investment of $40-60 million could become functional by the end of 2009. We will hold a 51 per cent equity in the project. There is enough land near Madurai airport for the project,” Mr Thiagarajan told Business Line. The MRO project would be set up as a separate profit centre and not as part of the airline.

The management feels that the venture would be a profitable as at present most Embraer aircraft in the region including those operated by the Australian airline Virgin Blue and by several airlines in the Gulf fly to Portugal for maintenance checks. Paramount is also evaluating the option of picking up an equity in an airport although this was unlikely to happen in the immediate future. “We will concentrate on inducting the aircraft and in setting up the MRO. Investment in an airport is an idea we are open to but it is not something that would happen immediately,” Mr Thiagarajan said.

Thats a whopping 160-240 crore Rs investment. Looks like this project has the scope of attracting other foreign airline companies to bring their embraer aircrafts to Madurai for maintenance, repair and overhaul.

That's a great news. More than the amount of money invested, it is a high profile industry that is possibly coming to Madurai. I hope this thing materializes.
