HAMBURG - One rainy day...

Ich geh durch die Strassen
im Inneren der Stadt
und fühl mich als wär ich
grad aufgewacht

alles ist hell
und doch scheint das Leben
der Gänge und Wege
erloschen zu sein

die Kreuzungen schlafen
kein Laut kommt vom Hafen
der Flugplatz am Friedhof
scheint ausser Betrieb
nichts wird den Himmel heute stören

Ich überquere die stummen
Autobahntrassen
Adern aus Licht
Verteiler der Angst

geh durch die leeren
Gärten und Parks
erleuchtete Lungen
im Herzen der Stadt

Es ist als wär jede
Bewegung erstarrt
der Wind ist vertrieben
die Schatten der Nacht
sind aus den Strassen verscheucht

Vor meinen Augen
beginnt es zu Flimmern
ich hab keinen Schimmer
wo ich hier bin
ist das die Stadt
aus der ich kam
ist das der Ort
an den ich will
oder nichts von alldem

Nichtmal die Geister
bewohnen die Trümmer
die schweigenden Schächte
der verlassenen Baustellen

die Häuser sind Leichen
verblassender Träume
bleiche Ruinen
von möglichen Räumen

die Plätze versteinern
die Bühnen verfallen
ein endloser Tag
liegt wie bleierner Schlaf
über dem Inneren der Stadt

Vor meinen Augen
beginnt es zu Flimmern
ich hab keinen Schimmer
wo ich hier bin
ist das die Stadt
aus der ich kam
ist das der Ort
an den ich will
oder nichts von alldem
Hamburg,...

-Kante, "Im Inneren der Stadt"

After Munich, Hamburg is the second German city I had the pleasure of spending a day in this year.

Approach from Vienna, already revealing that this was not the perfect day for a city trip...

On the U-Bahn:

Jungfernstieg in the rain:

Where's Rihanna when you need her? FOR ONCE?

You start to appreciate the huge number of shopping arcades and centers:

This really reminded me of home:

View from Michel (Michaeliskirche):

Towards the harbor:

What a day...

Speicherstadt and an U-Bahn (Hochbahn, rather) train of the line U3:

Michel from the ground:

Contemporary hanseatic architecture blends perfectly with the cityscape:

I take the opportunity to praise HH's extraordinary public transport system. The only thing that's missing is a direct link to the airport. But I heard that's about to change, right?

Landungsbrücken:

The Elbe:

I was the only one who dared to get outside on the boat to take pictures. I really feared for my camera in that nasty wet weather.

Getting off in Altona, this looks exactly like Vienna's main library:

Mmh... Commie blocks...

Mmh... classic cars...

The sheer size of Hamburg's harbor is breathtaking for me, coming from a landlocked country. You could say, I'm easily impressed. But I'm not!

At that point, the rains set in really hard.

Very low tide:

Speicherstadt / Hafencity:

Reminding me of Berlin:
(Or better,... to please all Hamburgians: There are places in Berlin that remind me of Hamburg :biggrin

Typically, the sun came out by the time I had to return to the airport...

Goodbye Hamburg!

All in all, I can say that I kind of fell in love with Hamburg. Beautiful location, intriguing architecture, very friendly people. I'll return, that's settled. It's hard to imagine for me just how nice this city would be in sunshine.

PLEASE COMMENT!

PS:
If you enjoyed these pics, stay tuned for Copenhagen. I'll be leaving on Thursday and returning on Sunday.

Lovely pics.
Did you eat Franzbrötchen in Hamburg? I don´t know if you have those in austria, I guess not because i didn´t see it in other german towns neither. It´s made of pastry and is almost like a flat sweet croissant with cinnamon. Very delicious. Typical hamburg cuisine...maybe the only one without fish

Well done, buddy! Really enjoyed the depressing atmosphere caused by the perfect weather

Have u visited any museums or stuff like that? Did u made a boat-trip (what a term) through the harbour and/or the Speicherstadt? I did so and I really appreciated that decision. Hamburg's wonderful

"Reminding me of Berlin:

You are very diplomatic!!!

In fact your admiration for Hamburg harbor doesn't suprise us...It's one of the largest ports in the world, isn't it? By the way the weather, I think, gave us an ideia of this nordic city atmosphere! You know, I have in my pc the Microsoft Train Simulator. And one of the routes I like most is that from Hamburg Hauptbanhof to Berliner Zoo. Man...more than 2 hours of journey through northern Germany!!! It's great!!!!! Thanks for the pictures!!!

I loved this thread. The sidewalk cafés make an interesting place to sit and watch the world go by in the rain. Nothing is as sexy as rain and urban landscape (in my opinion).
