Land for Alappuzha Cargo Terminal

Dennis Marcus Mathew

The project is part of 205-km National Waterways-3 from Kollam to Kottappuram.

ALAPPUZHA: The Alappuzha Cargo Terminal project of the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), which was hanging in balance following land acquisition hassles and protests from the public, will finally take a step forward this week when the government hands over the required land.

The project, which is part of the IWAI's plan to develop the 205-km National Waterways-3, which includes the much-talked about Kollam-Kottappuram stretch, was stalled after the district administration found it difficult to acquire the land and to hand it over to the IWAI and also due to strong opposition from the public, environmentalists and political parties to the terminal itself.

However, according to District Collector P. Venugopal, the district administration had finally sorted out the bottlenecks over land acquisition and would hand over the 5.63 acres required for the terminal to the IWAI on September 24.

Once the land was taken over by the IWAI, procedures to begin work on the terminal would be initiated, IWAI officials told The Hindu. This, they said, would hopefully speed up the work to develop the NW-3 as the country's first waterway having 24-hour navigational facilities on the entire stretch.

The development of the NW-3 had 11 terminals as part of the action plan. Seven of these, at Kottappuram, Aluva, Maradu, Vaikom, Thanneermukkom, Thrikkunnapuzha and Kayamkulam, were over while that at Kollam was nearing completion. Two were under construction at Bolghatty and Willingdon Island to connect the NW-3 to the upcoming international terminal at Vallarpadam.

Cargo movement

Cargo movement along the NW-3 which was 1.17 million tonnes in 2005-2006 had fallen to a mere 0.76 million tonnes in 2008-2009 with one of the main reasons being the obstacles in the path of developing the 76-km Alappuzha-Kollam stretch, which is the narrowest and also the longest on the entire waterway. Once the developmental work is completed, the projected cargo movement along the waterway is 7.17 million tonnes by 2020.

The Alappuzha terminal, which will come up right opposite the Nehru Pavilion of the Nehru Trophy Boat Race at the Punnamada Finishing Point, was also opposed by various quarters on counts of possible environmental pollution and the possibility of the boat race facing hurdles. The opposing voices, despite the land acquisition being over, are yet to die down.

Cancer centre makes headway in palliative care

Radhakrishnan Kuttoor

PATHANAMTHITTA: The District Cancer Centre (DCC) at Kozhencherry is making much headway in palliative care, drawing the attention of health agencies at the national and international level.

Established as a subsidiary of the Regional Cancer Centre under the National Cancer Control Programme in October, 1999, the Pathanamthitta centre has been identified as a model project by the World Health Organisation (WHO) five years ago.

The Mobile Pain and Palliative Care Unit launched by the centre in its 10th year of service has been doing a praiseworthy service since the past few months.

The four-member mobile unit led by K.G. Sasidharan Pillai, centre director, has been extending palliative care to as many as 167 poor terminally-ill patients in different parts of the district every week.

Aelamma, senior staff nurse; Soumya, staff nurse; and Hanson, helper; are the other members of the unit.

The unit visits patients registered with it every week. Bed-ridden patients are given palliative chemotherapy and other treatment free of cost. The centre is run by the District Cancer Centre Society (DCCS) chaired by the District Collector. The centre attached to the District Hospital complex at Kozhencherry was one among the five centres opened in the State 10 years ago.

The centre has recently introduced a scheme to extend monetary assistance to poor terminally-ill patients.

The society has deposited Rs.25 lakh as fixed deposit to make use of its monthly interest worth Rs.15,580 for disbursing an endowment of Rs.300 each among 50 terminally-ill patients every month.

Dr. Pillai says the endowment is for the patients to meet their incidental expenses like food, milk and so on. It is noteworthy that both the WHO and the Union Ministry of Health have recommended implementation of the ‘Kozhencherry-model' in all other districts too.

According to Dr. Pillai, as many as 68,386 persons have been screened at 226 cancer detection camps organised by the centre in different parts of the district during the past 10 years. As many as 428 new cases have been detected, besides providing follow-up care to 3,498 patients and palliative care to 1,372 terminally-ill patients during the period, he says.

Almost all the terminally-ill patients attended by the mobile unit are elderly people.

‘‘The very sight of the doctor and his team is a solace to me and I feel my pain is relieved a little bit during their weekly visits,'' said a woman patient.

The DCC mobile unit team has been doing the duty without claiming any special incentive, taking it a service to society, said Dr. Pillai.

Extension of monthly puja period mooted

Radhakrishnan Kuttoor

To ensure easy darshan at Sabarimala Ayyappa temple

PATHANAMTHITTA: The Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) is exploring the possibility of extending the duration of the monthly puja period at the Sabarimala Ayyappa temple to ensure smooth darshan for all pilgrims.

Sabarimala Devaswom Executive Officer V.S. Jayakumar has proposed that the board extend the monthly puja period from five days to 10 days and extend the Makaravilakku festival by 10 days.

A month ago, a Division Bench of the Kerala High Court had directed the board to consider the possibility of keeping the Ayyappa temple open throughout the year. The court's suggestion was aimed at easing the pilgrim pressure during the two-month annual Mandalam-Makaravilakku festival season.

Mr. Jayakumar is of the opinion that the board will not be in a position to keep the temple open round the year owing to its unique ritualistic traditions and practices.

The board and various government agencies have been facing difficulties in arranging permanent pilgrim facilities at the Sannidhanam as the temple remains open hardly for 140 days a year.

Mr. Jayakumar feels the temple can be kept open for at least half the year by extending the monthly puja period to 10 days and the temple closure date after the Makaravilakku festival to January 30.

Many pilgrims too have said that extending the monthly puja period would enable them to undertake the pilgrimage at their convenience.

Mr. Jayakumar feels extending the puja period by at least 50 days a year will help the board and the government departments to do away with the ad hoc arrangements and establish a permanent mechanism for providing better pilgrim amenities.

The Melsanthi (head priest) at both the Ayyappa temple and Malikappuram Devi temple have to stay at the Sannidhanam all through their year-long tenure.

BSNL to roll out 3G service in Sabarimala soon

Pilgrims can buy 3G data cards at Sannidhanam

Recharge coupons, top-up cards will be available

PATHANAMTHITTA: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has made elaborate arrangements to provide maximum possible telecommunication facility in Sabarimala and surrounding areas during the Mandalam-Makaravilakku pilgrimage season, said C. Sasidharan, BSNL General Manager.

Talking to The Hindu here on Monday, Mr. Sasidharan said the BSNL would rollout 3G mobile phone service in Sabarimala from the beginning of the annual festival season. He said 3G Data Cards with high-speed internet facility would also be made available at the Telecom Customer Service Centres at the Sannidhanam and Pampa.

Mr. Sasidharan said the BSNL had installed Base Transmission Stations (BTS) at Kumarankunnu, Nilackal and Angamoozhy, besides the ones at Sabarimala, Pampa and Saramkuthi, with a view to providing carpet coverage for cellular phones in Sabarimala and along the main trunk road leading to Pampa. BTS-attached vehicles too would be deployed on the Sabarimala route in an effort to extend cellular pone coverage even to the remote places on the route.

He said customer care centres with broadband internet kiosks and public call units had been opened at Pampa and Sannidhanam. Two BTS, each having a capacity to handle 75,000 calls daily, had been installed at Pampa and Sannidhanam, besides another BTS of the same capacity at Nilackal.

STD-ISD booths

Mr. Sasidharan said steps had also been taken to open STD-ISD booths on demand in Sabarimala during the pilgrim season. Various cellular phone recharge coupons, top-up cards, ‘Call Now' cards and Universal India Telecom Cards would be available at all the phone booths. He said special broadband cafés would also be opened at select points at Pampa and Sannidhanam.

Mr Sasidharan said the BSNL had made arrangements to extend more telecommunication facility to the palace town of Pandalam during the pilgrim season. Phone recharge coupons and top-up cards of all kinds were made available at the Pandalam base camp, he added.

WiMAX facility

Mr. Sasidharan said the BSNL would launch WiMAX to provide high-speed internet facility to its customers in the district soon.

The facility would be made available in Adoor, Mannady, Kodumon, Pandalam, Kaippattoor, Pathanamthitta, Mannarakulanji, Konni, Kumbazha, Ranni, Kozhencherry, Kumbanad, Kaviyur, Mallappally, Kunnamthanam, Thiruvalla and Niranom this month, he said.

Online gateway to Sabarimala temple

Staff Reporter

ALAPPUZHA: With the Sabarimala season beginning, the bustling town of Chengannur is busier than ever, the region being one of the most prominent transit points for pilgrims to the holy hills.

With the Chengannur railway station being recently declared as the Gateway of Sabarimala by the Railway Ministry as well, the district administration has gone ahead to make the halt for pilgrims at the town more comfortable.

Apart from the various amenities that are being offered on ground, the administration has now launched a website, www.gatewayofsabarimala.gov.in, which will provide almost all essential information required for a trip to Sabarimala.

According to Deputy Collector S. Harikishore, the website, which was inaugurated by Devaswom Minister Kadannappally Ramachandran earlier this week, was aimed at familiarising the pilgrims with Chengannur.

Information on the various pilgrim centres in and around Chengannur, including the historic Mahadevar Temple, the Pandalam Palace, the Thazhamon Madom, the Thattavila family, the Vandimala Devasthanam, the legendary Pandavan Para and the Panchapandava temples and the available amenities for pilgrims are posted on the website.

The different taxi rates from Chengannur to Pampa and back, to Pampa via Erumeli, the rates of KSRTC buses and the various packages offered by the State Road Transport Corporation, train timings, the telephone numbers of government departments, police, bus stations, the railway station and various hospitals are also given, he said.

The timings of various ‘poojas', facilities and important telephone numbers at Sabarimala too are provided. Currently in English, the website would soon be available in Malayalam, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Hindi as well, Mr. Harikishore said.

The website was designed and developed by the National Informatics Centre (NIC), Alappuzha, the efforts of which had won the Alappuzha District Collectorate the second place in the State E-Governance Awards this year, for developing the Nehru Trophy Boat Race website.

Hi friends
I am a native of Pathanamthitta, currently doing my B.E at Tamilnadu.
Happy to see you all here and also excited that I'm the first person to post in this thread in 2011 !!!!!!!

I'm a great fan of Pathanamthitta and also very much worried about Pathanamthitta's development especially the town.Government is not taking any action to the upliftment of the undeveloped PTA town.Pathanamthitta doesn't have full fledged facilities of a district headquarters as compared to other dist.HQs .Some important offices such as DTO Office,BSNL,Dy.Director of Edu office and hospitals such as Ayurveda hospital,District hospital are not in the Dist HQ.This may be bcoz of not having major politicians influence in our town.I think that one of the major mistake made by K.K Nair (founder of this district) is that the decision to include Thiruvalla also in this district. The district level offices are splited among these two towns.Because of that both Thiruvalla and Pathanamthitta towns lost the major developments that they have gotten in the future. We also lack good theaters,Star hotels, wide roads etc .These all must be get changed. But apart from this we also have some major developments such as a Ring road with 6 K.Ms, Kerala's third largest private bus stand,Two Central Govt. Schools(Bhavans, Cent.Govt School Chenneerkara),Indoor Stadium,Pramadam(Biggest in Central Travancore) etc . Being a Congress follower Iam very much disappointed with the performance of Pathanamthitta MLA(Congress). I dont know what he have done for the development of Pathanamthitta town for the past 5 years . But our new M.P Sri Anto Antony is giving us a new ray of hope in development. He has done a great job in setting up many educational institutions in Pathanamthitta constituency such as Medical College,IGNOU Community College,Central School,Central University South Campus etc. Pathanamthitta doesn't have the growth potential in the industrial and IT sectors due to the lack of transportation facilities.I believe that the propsed Aranmula airport would be a remedy for that and it can bring lot of developments.

Hopping for a better Pathanamthitta

As I'm new to this forum I need all of your support to continue . I hope you will also allow me to take part in your discussions.
