Yes a number of motorways have tolls. I think all have a freeflow system if you choose to use it. The M50 around Dublin is the only one where you can only use an electronic tag and there are no barriers. The rest have freeflow and barriers.

The M4 is tolled West of Dublin
The M1 is tolled North of Dublin
The M3 will be tolled North of Dublin
The M8 has one toll so far. Will have two when it is completed next year.
The M7 Southwest of Dublin will have one toll

There are motorways without tolls aswell. The M9 will have no toll. The M11 no toll. The M18 no toll etc.

What if I drive there with a Dutch car and I don't have an ETC? Will I get fined or mailed a bill?

Im not entirely certain but I think yes you will get a bill. You can pay in any shop here up till 8pm the following day after using it anyway so it's not all that difficult.

There's a similar problem with the Stockholm congestion charge and Finnish plates I believe.

Ireland's new motorways look stunning, even the toll booths. Judging by the pics, they have a very different feel to motorways in the UK.

Ireland should be very proud of its expanded motorway network. Looks really good and extensive.
I also like the fact that all your number fonts are written in the "English Font" !!!! which I think is good as I always like the way British motorway numbers are written.

You need to get some services built though.

I should also write to the Welsh assembly to get the A55 upgraded to Motorway so I can get to Ireland faster!!!!

Am I right in hearing him say each toll will be €1.40? If that is the case the limerick toll could be that as well with inflation going negative in the last year or so.

Guesswork is that the Limerick toll will start at €1.90 for cars, like the rest of them.

M3 will be (€1.40 + €1.40) over the 60km stretch as there are two booth, about the same as the €2.80 for the M4 toll.

so all that talk about the tolls being huge and no-one bothering to use it can all be forgotten now then? €2.80 for 60km isn't bad really is it?

It's a fantastic scheme, and M50 to the end of the scheme is a nice sub 2-hour journey.

Some of the interesting shots are:

Damaged metal barrier between Athlone and Balinasloe.

End of metal barrier and tie in with jersey barrier for Balinasloe to Galway section:

Typical route confirmation sign:

Cool rock formation:

Wide view at Athenry exit, Athenry is just to the right of this photo:

Very wide hard shoulder between J17 and J19. Could this be where J18 will be constructed in the future?

Approaching end of motorway regulations at J19:

Approaching Coolagh roundabout, end of scheme at J20:

The central reservation seems narrow at times, but never mind, it seems to be a good motorway
