Kansai Nerolac plans to open a plant in HOSUR
KOLKATA: Kansai Nerolac is reorienting its decorative paints strategy to leverage the recent boom in the housing sector. The company is sprucing up its emulsions business as part of this strategy.
The company is all set to splurge nearly Rs 50 crore for a decorative paints branding exercise in 2008-09, a major slice of which will go into promoting the emulsion paint category. The company is increasing its emulsion paints capacity. The company has just acquired over 50 acres at Hosur to set up a greenfield water-based emulsion paints unit at a capital outlay of Rs 67 crore. The company is likely to start construction in February 2008. http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/...ow/2642367.cms |

It is integration time at the Indian abrasives major Carborundum Universal Limited (Cumi) which acquired and set up plants in Russia, India and China.
The last two years saw the Rs526 crore turnover Cumi going on shopping and expansion binge within and without India. In September this year, the company acquired $54 million turnover Volzhsky Abrasive Works (VAW), Russia. Cumi acquired a 96 per cent stake in VAW for $37 million through its special purpose vehicle Cumi International Limited, Cyprus. An open offer to acquire the balance from other shareholders is on and would close on 23.1.2008. In August, Cumi acquired the Rs12 crore revenue industrial ceramics division of IVP Limited at Aurangabad, Maharashtra for around Rs6.25 crore on a slump sale basis. In China, the Indian company's joint venture company Jingri Cumi Super Hard Materials Company Limited has started commercial operations of its new 3,000 tpa bonded abrasives plant. The fag end of 2006 saw Cumi buying two units in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh for Rs3.2 crore. While one unit manufactures monolithic refractories, the second is engaged in the manufacture of high quality refractory cement, an input for the former. The acquisition provided Cumi an additional monolithic manufacturing capacity of 12,000 tonne per annum (tpa) catering to markets in Central India. According to company officials, these are exciting times as they are in the process of integrating the new acquisitions in their supply chain dynamics and chalking out which plant would supply where. In order to interact with the two companies located in the non-English speaking countries of Russia and China, Cumi has hired three Russian and one Chinese translator to facilitate communication. This apart, top Cumi officials have started learning Russian and Chinese languages. VAW-It is wow Like a newly married couple, Cumi and VAW are excited and are eagerly exploring and evaluating different integration possibilities. The Russian company is the world's second largest silicon carbide manufacturer with capacity of 65,000 tpa. The first is Saint Gobain, said to have a capacity of around 1.1 lakh tpa globally. According to Cumi officials, the Russian acquisition has come at the right time when globally there is a capacity shortage in the grains segment. ''We can now become a global player in the micro grains segment,'' said one official. Western countries discourage new plants in this field. Plants in Europe are closing down and even China that contributes 50 per cent of the alumina grains is tightening its environmental laws. Hence no major new investment has taken place in this segment. According to Cumi officials, alumina grains are short in supply and the prices have gone up by 35 per cent recently. Cumi's alumina grains needs are around 12,000 tpa and it sources majority of that from China with long term deals. VAW also makes bonded abrasives (capacity 35,000 tpa) and specialised refractories (3000tpa) similar to what Cumi has in India. According to Cumi officials, the Russian company sells around 9000 tpa of bonded abrasives and there is a good scope to increase the capacity. Interestingly nearly 52 per cent of VAW's workforce is women. For Cumi, the immediate focus is to improve efficiencies and fitting VAW in with its global supply chain. The Indian company is handling its first overseas acquisition with utmost care. Finding the existing VAW management capable of handling the Russian end, Cumi didn't disturb the set up there. Nor did Cumi post its official there to oversee. According to Cumi officials the operational integration between Cumi and VAW is happening SBU wise. Presently different teams - production, marketing and technology - from Cumi are meeting their Russian counterparts. While the Indian team imparts production efficiency techniques in Russia, they also learn the way huge capacities are handled with minimum work force. The results have already started showing. During the first nine months of operations VAW has posted a turnover of $50 million. For the whole year the company is expected to have a turnover of $60 million. Additional investments in Russia will happen only after consolidating the existing operations and scaling up of capacity utilisation. In the abrasives segment, Cumi now has a total capacity of around 50,000 tpa (VAW 35,000 tpa, new bonded abrasives plant in China 3,000 tpa and Cumi's own in India 12,000 tpa). The new Chinese plant which makes resinoid products, will also make vitrified products soon. As per indications, the Chinese plant will cater to the Middle East market. Similarly in the refractories segment Cumi will align its Indian operations with that of VAW. Cumi is also expanding its domestic refractories capacity with a new 3000 tpa plant at Ranipet in Tamil Nadu, at an outlay of Rs25 crore. Land to the extent of 18 acres has been acquired for the purpose, and the plant is expected to start operations in June 2008. The company is also setting up a Rs37 crore metallised cylinder plant at Hosur, which is expected to go on stream next year. Recently Cumi's major projects like expansion of industrial ceramics capacity at its Hosur plant to 6,000 tpa, bonded abrasives plant at Uttarakhand with a capacity of 3,000 tpa and the power tools plant at Bangalore went on stream. According to officials, the full benefits of these investments will accrue from next fiscal onwards, when all its new plants stabilise operations and reach better capacity utilisation. For Cumi the third quarter results will be sober. The bottomline growth may not be commensurate with growth in the topline, on account of higher depreciation and interest costs starting to kick in. The company has raised $5 million from external commercial borrowing to meet the acquisitions and other investments. Cushioning the interest burden is the revenue of Rs57 crore from the sale of land in Chennai, which was used for settling some bank loans. The company is also seriously looking at disinvesting some of its non-core investments and also synergising operations of its subsidiaries. Meanwhile the officials expect the consolidated turnover to for this fiscal to be in the region of Rs1000 crore. http://www.domain-b.com/companies/co...tegration.html |

Need for a new Greenfield airport at Hosur
TN Govt should propose a new airport in Hosur ASAP.
It doesn’t have to be huge. Just a medium size airport with at least 2 daily flights to Bombay, Delhi and Chennai. It can be built and maintained by a private company or it can be a joint venture. TN Govt can initiate talks with GVK group which is investing in Hosur SEZ and has prior airport building experience or any other group. The airport will be definitely viable in short and long term for the following reasons. The proposed new airport at Bangalore is out of reach (may take 2-3 hours to reach the airport) for most of the people in electronics city and other parts of Bangalore. It will definitely beneficial for the people of Northen TN, parts of Andhra & Bangalore The airport will serve the proposed Chennai-Bangalore industrial corridor. And finally the airport will be much cheaper to build and operate than the big metro airports. |

CHENNAI: The State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu has identified six hotspots along the Chennai-Hosur National Highway for setting up industrial complexes as part of the proposed Industrial Corridor of Excellence.
Further, the SIPCOT has identified more than 10,000 acres of land to set up the ‘Land Bank’ mentioned by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi in the New Industrial Policy 2007. Several international and local promoters are already queuing up before government agencies seeking land to set up their ventures in and around Chennai. The Chief Minister had proposed setting up of the ICE during the last week of October 2007 to boost the State economy. Talking to The Hindu, SIPCOT Chairman and Managing Director N. Govindan said, “We have moved in swiftly and have identified the land required for setting up of industrial township, industrial complexes, sub stations, logistics and airport. Further, we have floated a tender for choosing a consultant for the project. The consultant will be selected during the third week of January 2008 and will be given two months’ time to submit the feasibility study. In all probability, it will be ready by April 2008.” As per the proposal, the industrial complexes are likely to come up in Panapakkam (Walaja), Iyepedu (Arakkonam), Ranipet, Vellore, Kethandipatti (Jolarpet) and Sulagiri (Krishnagiri). The SIPCOT has three industrial complexes at Ranipet. The third unit – Leather SEZ – would be commissioned shortly, while the fourth unit would take some more time. “In Sulagiri, we have already identified 5,000 acres of land and in Panapakkam and Iyepadu around 2,500 acres and 2,000 acres respectively. In Kethandipatti and Ranipet, we have identified 1,000 acres each. In fact, the State Government had given us five years to set up the Land Bank. But, we might be achieving it in the first year itself. These are all dry lands and we are waiting for administrative sanction,” Mr. Govindan said. However, the consultant would state how much it would cost, where to house the industrial complexes, townships, sub stations and logistics. The ICE was being developed in two phases. The first phase runs from Chennai to Ranipet and the second phase from Ranipet to Hosur. http://www.hindu.com/2007/12/29/stor...2950080100.htm |

Russia-based Kamaz to set up truck assembly plant in TN
Friday January 11 2008 17:15 IST PTI Shaadi.com Matrimonial - Register for FREE MOSCOW: One of the Russia's largest truck maker, Kamaz incorporated, is eyeing a joint venture with its Indian partner, Tatra Vectra, to expand into the region. The agreement, to set up a truck assembly plant in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, could be signed on the sidelines of Indo-Russian business summit during Prime Minister Viktor Zubkov's New Delhi visit next month. "If our plans are implemented, this will be Kamaz's largest assembly enterprise outside Russia," the company's Asia-Pacific director, Denis Trifonov was quoted as saying by Ria Novosti. Kamaz would hold a controlling stake in the proposed JV and organise a complete knocked down (CKD) assembly of Russian trucks in Hosur in Tamil Nadu, he said. Kamaz already has assembly plants in Iran, Pakistan, Vietnam and former Soviet Republics of Ukraine and Kazakhstan. According to Trifonov, 10 per cent of locally produced components would be used in the first stage, with their share to be raised to 30-40 per cent in two-three years. Kamaz's India facility would sell the trucks not only within the country but also export them to Bangladesh, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and possibly Malaysia. The company Tatra Trucks Ltd was recently renamed as Tatra Vectra Motors Ltd, which is a part of the UK-based Vectra Group. |

Hosur: Come Valentine's Day and thousands of lovers around the world will convey their feelings with the never-withering symbol of love - a rose - albeit with a 'Made in India' tag. A month ahead of February 14, orders are pouring in from around the world for roses grown in southern India's floral corridor that spreads from Hosur in northwestern Tamil Nadu to neighbouring Bangalore. Nearly 50-odd farms, growing roses on hundred of acres of land between Hosur and Bangalore, are besieged with orders from as far as Europe, Australia and Japan. "We have recently received orders for one million roses from Australia for Valentine's Day. Besides, there are heavy bookings from European countries," Najeeb Ahmed, managing director of Tanflora Infrastructure Park Ltd, told IANS. Spread over 50 hectares of land in Amudagondapalli village near Hosur town, Tanflora is Asia's largest rose production centre, growing a whopping 37.5 million roses every year. Promoted by the Tamil Nadu government, Tanflora is one of the pioneering cooperative rose farming ventures in India, in which 25 floriculturists grow roses in green houses set up on two hectares of land each. A one-hectare farm can grow as many as 70,000 rose plants. And each plant gives at least 20 to 22 flowers every year in ideal "glass house" conditions. The demand on Valentine' Day is for mainly bright red roses. However the Japanese seem to prefer pastilles and pick pink roses while hot pink, yellow and orange roses from here find buyers at major flower auction centres in Holland and Germany. The global flower industry is dominated by Holland, accounting for nearly 50 per cent of the market share. But India, with its comparatively cheaper priced flowers, is slowly asserting its presence. Indian roses cost anything from Rs 8 (US 20 cents) per rose to Rs 40 ($1). The longer the stem of the rose, the costlier it gets. A 40 cm rose is priced at less than Rs 10 while one-metre roses fetch up to Rs 40 apiece. "For Valentine's Day, our roses are already sold out," says R D Reddy of Meghna Floritech Ltd, which has a six-hectare farm on the Kunegal road near Bangalore. A former chief conservator of forests of Andhra Pradesh, Reddy, who took to floriculture after retirement, adds: "There is at least a 30 per cent increase in rose exports for Valentine's Day." Rose plants require a land elevation of 900 to 1,000 metres above sea level and therefore Hosur-Bangalore floral corridor and Pune - another major cut flower producing region - are suitable for rose production. http://sify.com/news/fullstory.php?id=14588906 |

GMR Group eyes railway stations development
http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/...ow/2753140.cms
On GMR's auto and IT SEZ at Krishnagiri in Tamil Nadu Agarwala said that work on the 3,300-acre project was on track. He pegged the investment in basic infrastructure here at around Rs 2,300 crore and the overall cost of development, including social infrastructure, at around Rs 11,000 crore. "Land here mostly belongs to the government and is non-agricultural and hence the land acquisition process was easy. We plan to start allocating plots to interested parties in the next one-to-one-and-a-half years," Agarwala said. Being in close proximity to Bangalore and Hosur, IT and auto hubs respectively, the SEZ would focus primarily on both these segments, though units of other sectors too would find a place here, he said. "It is a multi-product SEZ," Agarwala said. |

Centre’s nod for Krishnagiri SEZ
http://www.newindpress.com/NewsItems...ennai&Topic=0&
CHENNAI: At a time when apprehensions were raised over the formation of IT parks in tier II cities in the State, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Wednesday revived the hopes of Krishnagiri people by announcing that the Centre had given its approval for the Krishnagiri Special Economic Zone (SEZ). Responding to a query raised by DMK MLA Sengottuvan about the status quo of IT park in Krishnagiri in the State Assembly, Karunanidhi said that ELCOT (Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu) had obtained the nod from the Centre for Krishnagiri SEZ and steps were being taken to develop the IT park there. The ownership of 172.19 acres land at Viswanathapuram village in Hosur in Krishnagiri district has been transferred to ELCOT, the Chief Minister said. To a supplementary question raised by PMK MLA Ranganathan about the revenue generated through software export, the Chief Minister pointed out that the annual export revenue was expected to climb up to Rs 26,000 crore in the last fiscal, against the Rs 21,700 crore and Rs 14,400 crore of the previous two financial years. Replying to CPM MLA Nanmaran, Karunanidhi told the House that ELCOT had expedited the IT park formation works in Madurai and Tiruchirapalli and the foundation stone would be laid in Madurai in a few weeks. More schemes for south Karunanidhi nearly gladdened the people in the Southern part of Tamil Nadu by assuring more schemes after the implementation of Nanguneri SEZ. Replying to party MLA Appavu during the question hour, he affirmed that Nanguneri SEZ project had gained momentum through an MoU signed last week and more illustrious projects would follow it as recommended by Justice Ratnavel Pandian committee constituted to study industrial prospects in southern Tamil Nadu. |

Flower auction centre plan for Hosur
Hosur: An international flower auction centre is likely to come up in this major hub of floriculture. The town now handles more than 35 per cent of the cut flowers traded in the country. Roses are cultivated on about 500 ha in the region. The region has more than 20 hi-tech floriculture units spread over 120 ha. The plan is for an auction centre on the lines of the International Flower Auction Centre (IFAB) in Bangalore. IFAB gets a major chunk of the flowers handled by it from the Hosur region. The establishment of an auction centre here has the potential to reduce transportation costs and provide direct marketing support for small and marginal farmers from the region. It is meant to have facilities for cold storage and packing, for both buyers and growers. A state-of-the-art electronic auction system and facilities for online bidding for cut flowers are envisaged. Informed sources said that two hectares of land had been identified for the purpose near Hosur. The financial and operational viability of the project were being worked out. Tanflora, a joint venture between the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) and private promoters, is the country’s first Agri Export Zone (AEZ) for cut roses and one of the largest such facilities. The district administration has decided to involve youngsters and small retailers to set up model nurseries in clusters under the National Horticulture Mission. The State already has four such clusters at Thally, Kelamangalam and Berigai. Tanflora has established infrastructural facilities for small and marginal farmers in and around the park. It will help small farmers and private entrepreneurs to put up polygreen houses, in selecting varieties and in marketing. The sources said Hosur’s potential in the floriculture industry remains largely untapped. http://www.hindu.com/2008/04/27/stor...2750320100.htm |
