This one by DoubleU is pretty cool. These beams are huge compared to the workers.

Haha, so true . I know hundreds of skyscrapers arround the world....but i've absolutely no notion of sports or fashion too

Nice! It's going horizontal!

I think it is at this stage of construction its size is most notable. We see this giant concrete core, the massive steel supercolumns and the horizontal beams big enough do drive a car along. Yes, it will grow to be even bigger, but then we just see "a building", because no matter how big the tower is, it will have to be squeezed to fit into pictures of roughly the same resolution. With overview shots we are unable to relate the scale of the towet to the stuff around, anything standing beside the tower will appear smaller and not vice versa (thus we say "the people look like ants!" instead of "damn, that tower is big compared to the people!"). Whereas close-ups that allow us to see the scale of the building won't fit all of it into one picture, and then it will be harder to realize the size of the entire thing.
At this point, we can see the entire tower and still make out the details. We instinctly understand how big a man is, and when we see him climbing around on a beam we understand how huge the building will be. We can see how the beam connects to the rest of the building, and how it relates to the entire area around it, and get a basic understanding of how huge it is. However, later on we won't be able to make the same relation, because the people will be so small compared to the tower that we can't properly think of them as people. They are just "little dots next to the big building".

So from now on, to get a proper sense of sizes, you have to be there in person. In a little while, it will be harder and harder to convey how mind-blowingly HUGE the tower is through pictures.

Might as well book a trip to Shenzen already.

I don't think that he was pulling my German leg. He probably just read somewhere about ST being U/C in Lujiazui. So at the sight of a construction site in Lujiazui he figured that it had to be ST.
I appologize German. Just when I see good English grammar I expect American, English or Australiain.. Is that your primary language or do you speak German as well? Good knowledge as well!!!!

Soon the 'nt really classy residential highrises' will give way to posh sky scrapers.
This is inevitable, this is evolution...

Thanks for that insightful discussion there. Was just curious but true, skyscraper knowledge still seems to be limited to us enthusiasts .

Same with regards to sports as you said. I could tell you buildings across the world about this or that but sports stuff? Nope. Haha.

Nice to see a lot of good steel progress. Looks like they're back at it in full force.

Kyll, thanks for that neat observation on structure and how we perceive it. That's always an important aspect of things, even if we're not designing this particular building.
