Worst case is that salt may impact the setting, so it may be weaker than anticipated.
These options will be discussed when the magnitude of the problem is known.

Thankfully we're not too high yet so I figure they could easily replace and repair once the extent of the issue is known, but ST for example, well... crap.

Negative! The site remains busy. They added more of those shorter column parts on top of the columns and the diagonal braces on the south side seems to be connected now.

Thanks. Google translates it to (for the many of us who can't read Chinese):

"The sea sand of dangerous buildings deer Dan Village scars has not been erased, on the night before the 2012 annual conference of the China Ping, Shenzhen Ping An International Financial Center on suspicion of the use of substandard sea sand concrete building housing the Bureau ordered the work to make rectification. This by a safe investment to build "China's tallest building was quickly drawn into the vortex of public opinion of the sea sand dangerous buildings.

15 and 17, the "Daily Economic News" reporter twice came to the construction site of Ping An International Financial Centre. 15, 2009 "relating to concrete construction projects have already stopped other projects normal construction, Ping An International Financial Center has 17 full suspension.

16, 2009, as Ping An International Financial Centre, one of the main suppliers of the concrete Shenzhen the East Ocean Building Material Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as the East Ocean) Shenzhen to live URA "red card" qualification certificate is revoked.

Reporter survey found that "East Ocean" one of the two major suppliers of concrete for Ping An International Financial Centre. "East Ocean" has affected the quality of the construction of the Ping An International Financial Centre? Shenzhen building housing has launched an investigation.

The Ping An international financial center downtime

Public information display, located in the downtown area of Shenzhen Ping An International Financial Center a total construction area of 459,187 square meters, the top height of 660 meters, is the tallest building under construction. The construction unit construction unit of China's Ping An Insurance (Group) Co., Ltd., the Department of Construction First Bureau Group Construction and Development Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as CCT Bureau).

On the afternoon of the 15th, the reporter went to Ping An International Financial Center construction site, and found that there are still workers and machines in the job. Site relevant person in charge explained that involve concrete construction projects have already stopped working, but other unrelated concrete project is still under construction.

On the morning of the 17th, the reporter again visits, the number of workers confirmed to reporters that the site has full suspension. "Received the notice of the competent, we just clean up some of the steel from yesterday (the 16th) all stopped, do not know when it started, it may take some days. Said to sand unqualified, government departments over the investigation. the crowd, a young worker told the "Daily Economic News" reporter.

In addition, the interview of Mr. Choi came to Ping An International Financial Centre project team was told that the interview was originally scheduled for the 17th has been postponed to 23 the employing units Ping aspects and did not disclose the specific reasons. According to a worker, to postpone the recruitment and downtime related.

15, 2009, Ping An Group spokesman Sheng Ruisheng to Performance Seminar being held in the grounds of the denial of the reporters. Subsequently, the reporter contacted Young Burt, public relations officer of Ping An Group. Bert Yang Ping attaches great importance to the financial center of the quality of the project, signed a contract with the general contractor explicitly "does not allow the use of sea sand and the past engineering concrete sand sampling, detection report shows that the chloride ion content in the sand are in line with national standards.

China Ping, general manager of any Kymmene said in the conference held on the 15th Annual Report, Ping An International Financial Centre alleged use of substandard sea sand concrete news was "very angry". He also played a vivid metaphor: "mean that we have been drinking milk, suddenly found the milk unsafe, we recall the past whether to drink unsafe milk and use this milk to feed their children. Because Ping An International Financial Center is tantamount to our children, we must be responsible for its quality. "any Kymmene said Ping An International Financial Centre is built to a height of 70 meters to 80 meters. In addition, the "Daily Economic News" reporter learned from relevant channels, Ping An International Financial Centre, a total of five.

Ping An International Financial Centre using sea sand concrete? The project is in compliance with concrete standards? The jury is still out as of the correspondents of press.

According to the Shenzhen local media reported, the inspection department of peace financial bonds pumping corer. The sampling site in the annex building, floor and concrete cylinders are pumping core sampling, core pulling holes about 10 cm in diameter. The test results will be announced shortly.

As the general contractor of the Ping An International Financial Centre, built a bureau in the aftermath of a very low-key, the reporter repeatedly tried their interview were unsuccessful. Rhetoric is not "inconvenient" and "the introduction of the test results," I do not know "," leadership is not.

The East Ocean sea sand shipments mystery Bureau

East Ocean as Ping An International Financial Centre, one of the major suppliers of the concrete, to become part of the sea sand events suffered the most severe punishment concrete company, Shenzhen housing the Bureau its stringent disposal to make revoke the qualification certificate.

Shenzhen world Concrete Co., Ltd. (tea light, Xili Town, Nanshan District, North Station) 15 (site) was ordered to suspend business for rectification year or half a year.

On the morning of the 16th, the "Daily Economic News" reporter came to East Ocean Shahe mixing station, hard to find other people in addition to the two security guards disappeared, the car's handling of the plant in the region also neat place "to rest". The reporter tried to investigations into the plant, but was stopped by security.

Public information, qualification certificates revoked before the East Ocean total investment of 90 million yuan, the various grade concrete designed annual production capacity of over 1.5 million m3. According to industry insiders, East ocean Department of Shenzhen concrete industry is quite powerful enterprises, and and Young Burt told reporters that several of the concrete supplier Ping An International Financial Centre, East Ocean occupies only a small share. East Ocean a staff had even denied to reporters that Ping An International Financial Center project supplier.

However, the reporter received a survey by Shenzhen's preparation of Surveying and Mapping Institute "safe financial center pile engineering mass concrete special construction program" clearly shows that the concrete supplier for Ping An International Financial Centre Concrete Co., Ltd. of Shenzhen Antoine Hill East Ocean. This argument is clearly and peace do not match.

Well, East ocean to Ping An International Financial Centre supplier in the end how much?

The paper pointed out that "large fly ash bulky floor concrete applications - 4.5 m of the financial center of Shenzhen Ping Huge Volume backplane" written by East Ocean Technical Director Feng Hanfeng, Ping An International Financial Center Tower volume backplane thickness of 4.5 m, time pouring concrete up to 30,000 cubic meters; addition, with the construction of the project, the capacity of 5,000 cubic meters of two East Ocean dispatched Nissan mixing equipment, which on December 1, 2011 to the 5th, only five days time, East Ocean Ping An International Financial Centre disposable continuous supply of approximately 13,800 cubic meters of concrete.

Insiders who requested anonymity, said that, as one of the major suppliers of Ping An International Financial Center, East Ocean provide concrete specifically how much of the amount is difficult to estimate.

Concrete programs clearly defined, concrete sand and Dongguan in the sand ", and the chloride ion content of 0.009%. Guangdong Province, Shenzhen University, Key Laboratory of coastal civil engineering durability a construction expert, told reporters that, in Dongguan sand is river sand.

For the failure of the hazards of sea sand concrete, the experts said that excessive chloride ions on the one hand beneath the concrete itself, so that it produces micro-cracks; When the chloride ions accumulate to a certain concentration, the destruction of the passive film, reinforced caused by steel corrosion; When the corrosion rate reached more than 10% will cause Shun ribs cracking of the protective layer, protective layer peeling, flaking, the seismic performance of reinforced greatly reduced.

I really feel upset when stupidity sets back a project, be anywhere in the world, but when it comes to China, it only adds more to its already damaged image, hope the people responsible gets their balls cut off.

This sort of QC issue is common in China. Concrete is done on an adhoc basis on the sidewalk in most construction situations under 8 floors.

I cannot believe the white hats on site were not testing the concrete before and after delivery for such a crucial project.

The worst that can happen is they drill some samples, find out it's off QC, and the structure needs to be razed and restarted.

It is not possible to have substandard concrete on the first 10 floors of a 660 metre building and have it be a small matter. This core holds up the building as well as the super columns and iron at the base that forms the support for the tower.

The engineers knew this was an issue and should have done due diligence. This isn't a 6F walk-up.

True. If the concrete is off spec, they may also choose to reinforce it by adding an extra layer aroudn the core (happened here in my city once), but that is just speculation.

Hello, I want to apologize for my English because I use google translation

I live in France and I followed this project every day, this is a very sad news that happens, I find this project really very beautiful, more in Europe little is known about this construction technique with massive steel column, c is quite strange especially for France who have used to build all concrete.

I hope that this project will take and it will not start again to zero. damage and because it gives a bad image of Chinese manufacturers will require that those responsible are punished severely!

There are English-language articles too. In fact, there was at least one a few days back

Of course SCMP is not the most reliable source (especially on Mainland China issues) but assuming that it's true, things sounds a bit scary

Shenzhen construction on hold after alert over cheap sand in concrete
http://www.scmp.com/news/china/artic...-sand-concrete

Quote:
Several major property projects in Shenzhen - including what will be the city's highest building - have been ordered to suspend construction after CCTV reported that concrete used by some local developers was made from cheap, untreated sea sand.

More projects are likely to be affected as the Shenzhen government ordered a citywide inspection into the practice, which they said was common throughout the Pearl River Delta. Untreated sea sand contains high levels of salt and chloride that could corrode steel reinforcements, causing buildings to collapse.

The Shenzhen Housing and Construction Bureau called an emergency news conference yesterday and said it was conducting a blanket investigation into the city's concrete-mixing plants. So far they had found 15 of the 92 plants in Shenzhen using low-quality sea sand as the raw material. The concrete was sold to local real estate developers.

The official refused to disclose how many residential and commercial buildings were erected with problematic concrete. But it ordered three high-profile projects - including the 660-metre-tall Pingan Financial Centre, scheduled to be completed in 2016 - to suspend construction pending further notice. Pingan Financial Centre will be the tallest structure in Guangdong. Construction workers were still busy on the site after the Shenzhen government's press conference.

China Central Television reported on Thursday that many Shenzhen developers replaced expensive river sand with much cheaper sea sand as a building material. It named and shamed four concrete-mixing plants - including one owned by Hong Kong-listed China Resources Cement Holdings.

The report also accused the two largest sandpits in Shenzhen, which supply concrete-mixing plants, of using seawater instead of much more expensive fresh water to wash sand. It said sea sand was used in several government-funded projects, including subways. Shenzhen Metro insisted all its projects were safe and met national standards.

China Resources Cement Holdings said it had launched an investigation and no substandard products had been found.

Experts in Hong Kong said sea sand was never used in the city even though it is not banned.

"Treating the sea sand is very costly and it requires a large area to soak it in [fresh] water," said Chan Chi-ming, who is head of the department of construction at the Institute of Vocational Education. He said the soaking process was intended to remove all traces of the salt.

A professional at a Hong Kong construction company said no developer here would risk using sea sand. "If it is not treated well, the concrete will peel off the building after 10 years or so."

A spokesman for the Housing Authority said the sand used in its buildings came from crushed rocks at a quarry in the Pearl River region.

Zu Lihong, an official at the Shenzhen housing and construction bureau, admitted that the use of sea sand in construction was widespread because of a lack of river sand.

The central government - to protect the rivers that supply fresh water to Hong Kong and Macau - banned local authorities from mining river sand.

Zhu tried to play down the danger and said sea sand can be used after washing and desalting, in line with a regulation issued by the construction ministry.

The owner of a luxury flat developed by China Resources said he was worried. "These units are so expensive. How could you imagine they are using substandard material?" he said.

Kou Zuomin, a retired architect in Shenzhen, said the use of sea sand was an open secret.

"Both developers and supervisors know it but they just turn a blind eye."
Exposé cracks confidence in building safety
http://www.scmp.com/property/hong-ko...uilding-safety

Quote:
Safety fears and uncertainty struck Shenzhen's property sector after the city government revoked the licence of a major company over substandard building material and halted the construction of what was to be the country's tallest building.

The government named 15 building material companies that were found to have used poor ingredients and said samples from the 660-metre-high Ping An Financial Centre were being tested.

The crackdown came after a China Central Television (CCTV) exposé on Thursday on how Shenzhen's developers replaced river sand with much cheaper, substandard sea sand in concrete without proper de-salting.

The city government's move caught the construction sector off-guard and cast a shadow over the prestigious multibillion-dollar Ping An project, with many analysts now wondering if it will be completed on time.

There were 92 concrete-mixing operations in the city, the Shenzhen Housing and Construction Bureau said, including the 15 tainted companies.

Last year, the bureau revoked the licences of another 16 concrete companies for failing to meet the required standards.

One Shenzhen-based property agent said: "I think it's going to be the milk powder scandal of our industry. If the Ping An project is found to use even one particle of substandard sea sand, market confidence will collapse."

About 200 buyers of flats in Jiayu Garden in the city's Longgang district took to the streets on Sunday calling for a refund after CCTV named the complex as an example of housing projects using untreated sea sand.

Some owners of flats at the Spring Land development in Baoan district said sea sand was also used in their buildings.

"We'll petition the city government along with other affected property owners," one flat owner said.

In December, a TV station in Foshan reported that sea sand was in concrete that was used in more than 80 per cent of the city's residential and commercial blocks. More than 1,000 property owners of four estates in the city launched protests in December but the municipal government dismissed the complaints, saying there was not enough evidence.

Why is Ping An Finance Center in Proposed Supertalls thread?
This sudden suspension for investigation time doesn't entitle for it now, I think.
