From all the previous angles and pics taken, I thought this was being built in a somewhat desolate area.. But looking at HarryChao's pics. Wow I never knew there were skyscrapers just across the street.

It's almost in the middle of the CBD, isn't it? Therefore no surprise there are other skyscrapers around.

I agree! It's right beside the exhibition center and it will be connected to LINK City, an underground shooping mall which runs between the Exhibition Center (Line 1 & 4) and Shopping Park metro station, and to the new Futian station where trains will departure to Kowloon (Hong Kong) within 12 minutes and to BeiJing (~10 hours). Plus, the airport express will start from Futian station and it is already an interchange for metro lines 2 and 3. Through LINK city you also can go easily to the Shopping Park station which is also an interchange station of line 1 and 3. I also can imagine that they will have some additional underground tunnels to/from Coco Park into the basement levels of Ping'An. To end with, as it was already mentioned, it is right in the "middle"* of the CBD.

*there is no real center location at the CBD in Futian as all the building are alligned on the east and west side of the North-South axis which runs from the exhibition center through the two shopping malls (Central Walk and Wongtee Plaza), the Civic Center (indicated by the small void at the roof, picture 2) and up to the top of LianHua mountain where the statue of Deng XiaoPing stands and overlooks the whole CBD.

most of the pictures have been taken from an angle that looks like 200' off the ground. Did that give any hints as to what was surrounding Pingan?

Just look at that big Futian CBD render (originally for Gemdale project). You can see twin towers of ~400m next to Ping An (left side).

No, but I mean the twin plot at the other side of the CBD to make the whole area more "balanced". Those twins in the render you posted are in the same row of plots as Ping'an. We have seen

In this render we can see one big concept skyscraper (285m~) next to Ping'an 2.

In this one, in addition to Ping'an 1 and Ping'an 2 we can clearly see 2x285m~ plus a 250m~ tower

But I mean, even before Ping'An was approved they have said so many times that they would build a similar project at the east part of the CBD to make it more equilibrated. Looking at GE it looks impossible to place a twin plot because they already have Fortune Tower and Modern International Center there. But would they build it anywhere else around them?

That would form a nice line of skyscrapers.
