They are also installing two concrete arms at the core. It should go much faster when they're done with that

Just a sincere question about all these supertalls being built in China: Are they really growing so fast that they need them? Or are they essentially vacant trophy buildings?

Chinese cities are growing rapidly, they need all the space they can get.

It's a bit of both I guess. Anyway, Ping An tower is named after its major tenant.

In major cities there is a huge shortage of office spaces, Shanghai's office vacancy rate is dangerously low thus driving rent cost up to unsustainable level. Buildings like Shanghai Tower will be filled in no time. Shanghai only has two supertalls under construction right now, considering the demand it should have five. In some much smaller cities the demand will not be so strong, but because supertalls are desirable real estate no matter where, they can fill them but probably at a much lower price.

The building under construction next to Shanghai Tower is Oriental Financial Center. The "plot" next to Jinmao is reserved green belt and no skyscraper will be built there.

The outter superbeams seem to have no plating after a certain height.

I was noticing that, I take it those will not be seen, just add to support? Because they actually look pretty cool. I don't know but it'll be interesting what they do with them at the next stage.

They will be seen very much. To be 100% accurate they call them concrete placing booms. They are connected to the system of pipes going along the buildings core. At the bottom of the tower there usually is placed powerful concrete pump which push that concrete to the top and placing booms sort of like cranes delivers where it is needed. It will look something like that.

Just to add to this there are cities like Shanghai and Shenzhen and couple other bigones (probably most of them) who build mostly for demand. But there are also cities like Tianjin building definitely more in regard to the idea "if it's build they will come". So there rather isn't one rule for that in China.
