I have more information regarding the news on the "potential suspension" of this project.

1. On March 14, an accident happened on the construction site of the Hanking Hill residential estate in Nanshan District. The bamboo scaffolding at some 30 meters above ground gave way, 9 workers plummeted to the ground and died.

2. As a result of this incident, Shenzhen police issued a city-wide crackdown on construction site safety. They inspected every building site in the city and ranked each of them on a "watch list".

3. Meanwhile construction activity on this Ping'an site goes on until 2am every night. They will soon conduct work 24 hours a day as per schedule. Nearby residents have filed numerous complaints about the noise coming from them.

4. Given this tower's height, location, prominence, and the above, Ping'an was placed in the highest category on the "danger watch list". The construction firm was given a list of strict rules to follow, with regular surprise inspections for the coming 2 months. The authorities will halt the site completely if there is any breach of those rules.

Why are they crazy enough to use bamboo as their scaffolding?

Firstly it is cheap and has a higher tensile strength than steel

Thanks a lot Scion for the explanations! I had heard about the 9 workers who all died together, this was very sad news! And I think it's for the best that there are more protective mesure for the safety of these workers! They desserve this.

I was thinking last time, walking close to PingAn construction site, that there is not enough tribute or even not tribute AT ALL give to all these workers! We only see the names of the companies, of the investors and so on... This would be a bright idea to engrave somewhere in a stone of the building the names of all the workers who worker on the building. Like this later these workers will be proud to show that they participated in building such constructions!

I don't think the use bamboo anymore in mainland China for their scaffolding. I see only this in Hong Kong nowadays.
