If the 660m version went through all approval instances then there's no reason to worry. Even good and serious news sites tend to spread, or fall for misinformation when it comes to skyscraper construction. In an article regarding the Burj 2020 project, Gulf News even called Tokyo Sky Tree an "office tower"

I agree, I am not worried this doesn't go full height.

I kind of agree too. Looking at the diagrams on skyscraperpage.com it still looks really good without the spire. Very sculpted and sharp! Then, you can't say it has a cheating spire.

Spire-less looks way better IMO ... it gives it an identity different from what you expect for such a structural design.

This building would look hideous without a spire. The whole design points towards a sharp pinnacle.

I was just checking out SSP and all the Ping An diagrams I saw showed the design including a spire.

Would look totally unfinished without the spire.

Like others have mentioned, this one of the few towers where I wholly welcome the spire.

I did my best to cut the spire out of a rendering:

Even though it looks okay (nice actually), I would be disappointed if they cut the spire. I'm not worried too much though; the plans had to go to the approval process and a design change this late seems unlikely. It's not that long till we find out, though.

And here's the only diagram on SSP I found without a spire. It looks like they cut the whole top part and tweaked the rest.

On Gaoloumi a member went to the topping out party of the core yesterday. He asked several people involved in the project and everyone said its 660 meters. We'll see....

lot of chinese media sources say 600meters. One crane operator said that too...

Here's Shenzhen daily: http://szdaily.sznews.com/html/2014-...nt_3109907.htm relaying state media news.

Guess we need to wait for at least a month more before we pass on a verdict on the final height. This is a megatall, we just can't change the height because of few articles. All the reports have to be unanimous

I dunno reading the arguments i am getting sold on the idea of it being a less than 600 m tower say something like a Tianjin 117.

and i will be honest . It would look real sad without the spire as the entire structure and body is designed to converge towards a point. That is what brings the entire majestic look to this building. Without the spire it looks like a building oddly cut off at the top without a terrace.

Am I the only one who prefers the version without spire? Spires are outdated and pointless imo.

I'm glad there is no spire because Shanghai Tower will be the tallest in China in the official measurements.
