Hard statement...
If the building would have been planned from the beginning without a spire most "spire enthusiasts" would not criticize this.
So many buildings have a spire, so this one is imo precisely unique. For me the shape of it don't make it look unfinished without spire. But we will see what the final version will be.

This would actually look really good with a flat roof though, better than the design that builds up to a spire that might be cut.

Ditto that

China has many buildings within 500m-600m U/C. Without the spire this building would hold little value in the future. With the spire it would've become the second tallest building in the world for a while.

Oh wow, that does look good! It's a little ICC-esque. I will miss the spire, but I much prefer this flat-topped look to the pointy version.

Cesar Pelli might just sue if the tower ends up like that lol. If they can't go with a large spire, they should go with a stubby one, anything to accentuate the tapering crown.

Without the spire it just looks incomplete. This would have probally been the best incorporated spire since the Chrysler building.. Oh well

O.k o.k guys....gladly savors are different
But for me there is another reason why i'm not satisfied with some "spire-buildings" generally.

I know that the official high rating based on the complete building with spire as a structural part of it. But when i see for example petronas towers, nanjing greenland center or others with large spires...imo the rating is kind of vertigo label.
Build a 500m up to the roof supertall, ad a 150m spire and you've got the second tallest bulding in the world.

Shanghai Shimao International Plaza...official higher than China World Trade Center Tower 3, or the Index in dubai. That's weird imo.

Looks weird, The tower stops too abrupt. Without the spire, the tower does not look iconic anymore, IMO.

Yes and you certainly wouldn't mind the part where planes just crash into it

Anyway why haven't we changed the height of the thread yet .Looks like it is sufficiently clear that we are not having a mega tall

Here's a pic of Ping An Finance Center, just to remind how sexy the tower with the spire looks like...

seriously, even without the spire. All it needs to be a good design is something, anything to accentuate the tapering crown up top.
