When you stand next to it or even from a distance it doesn't seems smaller without the thin spire

The cranes are now violating the maximum aviation height rule...

So is it official that there will be no spire? Has anybody confirmed that with a reliable source?

I think this is enough to believe the hight reduction.

I have lost all the interest in this project. This is now just another Chinese supertall. Nobody will remember this building outside Shenzhen 10 years later (except for skyscraper enthusiasts)

It is insane that this would happen at this stage of construction. If this was to happen in the US, the developer would immediately sue the governmental agency responsible for this problem (assuming all pertinent reviews and permits were approved before construction begun).

I still find it hard to believe that the city of Guangzhou would "give up" the title of the tallest building in China to Shanghai [Shanghai Tower] so easily. There has to be a back story to this.

This building is ruined without the spire. What a petty if it indeed goes spire-less.

I don't think so. Do you really believe that the "average" people would worship and remember it more WITH the spire?
People not much interestet in skyscraper architecture see it and think: oh it's really huge...i like it/don't like it.

Average people do care about the towers in their city if the building is significant (for ex- Patronas in Kuala Lumpur and ESB in New York). Ping An could have been the tallest building in China and the 2nd tallest building in the world after completion, at least a few would have known that fact. Too bad Ping An won't even get any local attention.

I'm guessing there will be a big redesign for the uppermost part off this building. Has construction slowed much on the lower floors and cladding?

If it´s necessary to reduce the height, they should reduce it to 633. The building needs some spire and it´ll be great promotion to be the second tallest building... Without any spire it will be ugly and boring building.

You contradicting yourself. "At least a few would known the fact Ping An would have to be the second tallest in china...so it won't even get any local attention."
That makes no sense.
When the majority doesn't know on what position Ping An stands why should they ignore it?

Furthermore Ping An will be by far the tallest building in Shenzhen and at least the 4. tallest building with 600m for a while behind Mekka Royal Clock Tower. And also for a while indeed the second tallest building in china.
All other higher than that (Kingdom Tower, Zhongnan Center, Wuhan Greenland Center etc.) will be finished after Ping An.
So i don't think Ping An will be only one ordinary skyscraper for the Shenzhen people.

So, the crown will stay the same, just without the spire?

I guess the architects have been working on alternative ways to bring the tower to a satisfying conclusion. As of this evening the billboards by the site still show the spire though. I don't know there's anything definitive in the public domain yet.
