Since I don't want to 'get real' yet, and I'm hoping for a spire...
1 - could that small square platform on the top be just temporary?
2 - the "flat top" we see here, well, looks like it's been part of the project all along... take a look at the first rendering on the first page of this thread.

I do agree that the top platform looks "flimsy" in comparison to what is just below it. It also doesn't line up exactly with the beams just below. I guess only time will tell what all this means...

I would not be so surprised if the new crane will remain there, and will be used as a "service crane" for building cleaning and stuff. Usually those cranes are "hidden" in the mechanical floors, but this building will have all kinds of used spaces on top of the building, like observatory, restaurant, bar, art gallery and who know what... not a lot of space to house a "behemoth" like that.

You can see the service crane in the building here:

It is probably similar in size, if not bigger than the one in One57, it just looks smaller because of how enormous Ping An is!

I suspect the yellow crane is to finish things off, and also remove the bigger crane, which would be too big for the maintenance crane to remove.

What could that grey steel part be which lies inside the middle of the top?

you mean just under the slightly pointy 'roof' part below the big hollow?
that is the BMU (building maintenance unit) or service crane I just mentioned.

That would be fast... but if you want to requote all post that say the spire will be there, it will take you all day.

I'm still hoping for a spire as well, but if it doesn't have a spire.........oh well. It would still look good though

You didn't just express an opinion that the spire will not be there, you said everyone who does not agree with you on this is out of touch with reality. Big difference.

Does anyone know why they're replacing the blue crane with one that seems to be the same size?

To me it even looks like it's exact the same crane....just in yellow. Maybe they need two cranesfor the last step? I really don't know.

So what do people think: could a spire fit in between that square up at the top? (The one at the very top, the one that looks like an afterthought and made of a total of 12 smaller steel beams - and looks to be about 3 x 3 m in size)

Unless it is very short - to make it to 600m? - I don't think so.
