Yes, of course! I too loved this tower until they performed all these changes. Some of them I can deal with, like having a silver cladding instead of gold. But having these black tiles at the lower part of the tower, and especially removing the spire, killed it for me.

About sources, here is a Chinese one:

Translation:

Its a quite bad google translation, but still, you can get the main message that the height limit of 600m will be kept by simply cutting the 60m spire.
Sorry guys.

Oh well. This might have been my favorite tower anywhere as originally designed.

Well early trading indicates that the shenzen stock exchange is it up 2.9% so all the worries about the Chinese stock market tumbling might be able to breathe a sigh of relief, also shanghai is up 2.8% so I dont expect to see any construction to be affected too much

The more the idea of no spire grows on me, the more i like it. I still have a feeling that with a proper lighting scheme it will blow us away.

A quick idea to implement after they knew the spire was gone:

Yay or nay?

LOL, agree totally. Its a building for crap's sake. The spire is un necessary, generates zero revenue once the building is "operating" and is an added expense in construction.

I think the building looks great with it or without it. As an accountant I can certainly see why "without it" is the choice in the end.

One thing is true, I canīt imagine night performance of Pingan with the spire. The question is - how to light up the spire? Would Pinganīs night performance look good if the spire wasnīt lighted?

Well if the approach path from north and east is the red one on the map you posted, then it's even weirder than I thought, since planes are meant to cross the Ping an (downtown) area about 40 km from the runway when approaching it along the path, meaning 600 meters (or 660) should be an absolutely irrelevant height. Chek Lap Kok has taller mountains at half that distance from the runway, when aircraft take off in an easterly direction. Approach from south at Shenzhen should obviously not involve crossing the downtown.
