I like this one. The design is sleek and soaring, without the superfluous kitschy details you see in so many of the skyscrapers going up in the Middle East.

Hi all.

Hi Helghast.
Not for a cofferdam but it doesn't look like they are to support the ground either, to me, as Rise posted. They seem to be doing a kind of top down construction here leaving holes (rings) in the concrete level they have poured for the mall and tower core that will rise later. They are excavating under said level around the support columns (piles they put in earlier) now. They are also leaving trapezoidal shaped holes for the supercolumns of the main tower.

Whether they continue down with successive concrete levels like the one in place now leaving holes and then later work their way from the bottom up with the structure levels remains to be seen. This is a very interesting construction technique that will be cool to watch.

Also the project is kinda neat in the fact that the site they are working on right now will house the main tower and the mall/podium. The hotel will be across the street on the mall side with a bridge-like connection over that street.

Yet another project that is great to watch from the start.

The concrete acts as a form of brace for the surrounding ground to prevent collapse, but at the same time it is being used for the permanent structure. They use concrete in the area due to the softness of the soil, which moves very easily. By pouring the concrete, then digging, they both provide support for the future structure and provide support for the current site. By doing this they don't have to remove steel supports that hold up the ground (ie, ones used in buildings in Dubai).

Just for the mall. No activity on the other plot. Workers barracks are built though.

Will the shorter tower have one of those round holes, too?
