That's because Shenzhen is the most advanced city in China with an economy based on higher end manufacturing, electronics, software, services, R&D and financial industry - not heavy industry.

Furthermore Shenzhen has subtropical climate - so no need to burn absurd amounts of coal for heating in the winter

70 meter violations if air space, civilian aviation digging its heels rather than being smoozed over as expected. They refused to re-route the airport approach just for this tower.

Same thing happened to canton tower a few years back where the spire height was reduced. EXTRA millions was spent for that height reduction as well. Would not surprise me if it costs extra for ping an as well, since last minute changes always end up costing more even for feature reductions.

Well, the area around Beijing (northern hebei) produces more steel than entire continents like Europe and North America, and more cement than these two continents combined many times over, so you can imagine how much pollution these factory produce. Shenzhen does not have that sort of industry or that sort of capacity, which also benefits from less pollutions. However, Beijing do manage to get quite a few crisp clear skies during the summer (probably same if not more than the really bad winter smog days), but that would not make it in the news.

This is taken during my visit to Beijing this June:

Unlike other Chinese cities, Shenzhen doesn't have air problems(air might be a bit polluted in winter). December to January is the most polluted time of the year. In summer, air quality is always excellent.

I've found very interesting article with most probably group of 20 tallest megatalls forecasted in 2020 and unfortunately the Ping An Finance Center with 599 m will be not so high in that competition like in the publication, where is classified on 3rd place after Kingdom Tower and Burj Khalifa

That "crazy contraption" is to dig trenches for a slurry wall. Pretty common equipment.

The spire was cancelled by a the local govt due to airport height restrictions. There was literally no way round it as planes often make a turning over Shenzhen
