You have to remember the total gross floor area of the two towers. PIFC can't compare to Shanghai Tower. The amount of load that the foundation has to hold is far larger for ST than PIFC.

Hi Wonder.

Rise has a good point but there is also this to consider ...
The hole here is smaller than the "ring" of supercolumns for the tower. The 8 square holes for them can be seen outside the hole.
The hole for ST is (was) larger than its "ring" of supercolumns.

Hi snap.

If you are referring to the area of the site that is across the street from the 2 current holes (that is not excavated yet) that is where the 66 level / 307 meter tall hotel will be situated. The 2 current holes are for the mall and the main tower.

Here is a site plan - click for larger.

Imagine all the hell the Empire State Building owners would raise if someone tried to build a 2,000 foot tall tower near them.

Want to know? Just look at the whole mash up over the Penn Plaza tower.

"It doesn't look.."

It is a sleek tower, but maybe also the photo position is influencing this (only 20th floor).

It looks so much like a modern take on the empire state building, also nice to see they are making good progress on the main tower and mall, only to floors to go now!

Wow, this tower really fits shenzhen, I really hope shenzhen builds more good towers like these. They don't have to be this tall, but of this quality would be nice, a nice change from the usual boxes. It actually looks out of place if it was built in NYC, maybe shanghai might have a chance of fitting this tower in their pudong skyline, though it will share some similarities with Jin Mao.

It could have been built in HK, replacing ICC, it would have been a perfect gate tower

looks like one of the corners, possibly around floor 20-25, based on the renders on the first page. The corner itself doesn't actually have any gold coloured cladding, so it will be interesting to see what it looks like when they take the protective covers off the left side of the mock up.

nice tower though.

What is this concrete square at the bottom of the main tower hole? And what is the red carpet? Ceremony for the fondation stone? Have we reached the bottom?

Yeah id say that they had a bottoming out ceremony or something.

I'd say that the rest of the area will be dug down to the depth of the concrete slab. At first I thought it might be for the core but it would be way too small!

What's strange is that we're only at the 4th floor under ground level while there should be 5.

It looks like the center is deeper than the edges, so the center might be at the bottom, while the edges are still at the 4th floor.

Wow, I was expecting another month (to get to the fifth floor) before seeing the foundation. Fantastic. It's going to be fun watching this one chase after Shanghai Tower for China's tallest.

Hi all.

The drawing posted here before definately shows a B5 level that is bigger than the main tower - and therefore bigger than the hole.

They may have revised the plans because the square does kinda look like its for the bottom of the core elevator shafts and looking at the left side of the hole we are only at level B4.

The red may be carpet for a ceremony or perhaps some sort of waterproofing membrane ?

What's got me, is I expect(ed) to see piles covering the bottom of the hole. Then pile caps broken, rebar tied in to the rebar for the floor of B5 then a big first pour. I find it a bit unbelievable that the tower rests only on the piles outside the hole ?

The whole top down method for the podiums, leaving holes for the main structures is already very different and interesting.

Getting more interesting after todays updates.

Corner for cornerstone?

The tower is round and does not have corners.

Where does the cornerstone go?
