Or maybe this excavators would take too much space on the site, since they have to stand somewhere out of the hole. Or at last maybe simply this holes will be deeper than we expect (and also quite narrow for an excavator) , and simply this excavators arms are not long enough to operate in this circumstances? I can't know this but I can be pretty sure its not because they saving costs, since time is also one of the costs and if that would be possible to do it faster with machines, I'm pretty sure they would use them.
See reply 1471 in Page 74 of this thread. The news didn't specify which building but I believe it's the construction of PAIFC caused sinking of Metro Line 1's Shopping Park Station. At that time a transfer station between Line 1 and Line 3 is under construction at Shopping Park. All works were halted to correct the problem and engineering changes were made to stop the sinking.

I understand that halting work and/or changing project may have something to do with metro, but I don't understand what difference does it make to dig exactly the same holes by hand or by machine.

I don't know either, I only guessed that this rather fragile metro station might be the reason not to use heavy machinery. I don't know how much ground disturbance that machine will cause compare to digging by hand, maybe someone with expertise in the area can chip in.

That went trough my mind, but then again cement tracks, and tracks with soil are going there all the time, so I don't think that is the case either.

Hi all.

My thoughts on the hand technique are these:
- I posted prev. on the possibility of regulations on piling near UG lines. Going further, perhaps as hmmwv posted, new regs were put into place because of the disturbance of the station.
- It could be as simple as the proceedure for exposing UG pipelines. Hand digging will take longer verses using heavy machinery but it all but eliminates the possibility of damaging the line. I realize they're not going to expose the metro line but the idea may be the same.

The thing is, it is likely this proceedure was planned over a year ago. I would think they would have done the piles for the main structure at the same time as the podium columns were done by piling rigs - before any excavation was done. Not sure if a clamshell unit would have been used or something more like a slurry wall rig ? I do know that barretts can be done that are much bigger than round piles. The foundation plan for the Nakheel Tower comes to mind. Point is, they must have had this hand proceedure in mind (virtually) from the start.

Good to see some ideas being thrown around regarding this unique proceedure (for this day and age).

Amazing deep hole
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but what are they digging for in these pics?

Where I live there is a hole like this, but just one, and it's been there for almost a year!

Hi all.

Hi ddss.

There's a saying in my country when digging a deep hole - 'What, are you going to dig to China ?'

I guess not appropriate here .....

They are hand digging piles for the main structure.

I'm dying to see some new pics from this one, does anyone know how deep these are actually going to go? I'm guessing it's going to be pretty deep.

Looks like old SOM's design of Russia Tower from 1990's. Even same height.

I hope the Shenzhen Pingan building will turn out just as ugly as this one in Shanghai. Just pisses me off, especially the red ugly fat logo. Only the red logos are lit at night so pretty much you see them hovering out of nowhere.

No sane person would shove this ugly monster in middle of world class glassy skyscrapers.
