As to the West End... I live there, and consequently like to bitch about the pubs and restaurants. It depends on what you like though - modern bars, or real ale type pubs? If it's bars you're after, I suppose Brel on Ashton Lane isn't a bad bet, although the whole lane is too busy. Really for modern bars, you're best heading into the Merchant City where there are tons. If it's pubs, then Tennents on Byres Road has a good selection of beers, and is the best place to watch football too imo. Somewhere inbetween the two, The Belle on Great Western Road, just a few block from Oran Mor is my favourite at the moment. Cail Bruich on Gt Western Road is a decent place for Scottish food, and the best curries in the West End are had in The Wee Curry shop (one on Ashton lane, upstairs, and another one near the bottom of Byres Road). |

The mention the Uffizi in the Evening Times today chimes nicely with The Belle here. The doors to their toilets are labeled with Piero della Francesca's painintings of Isabella and Federico da Montefeltro:
![]() A bit further away from Byres Road, but I can highly recommend the Ben Nevis on Argyle Street - great selection of whiskies and beers. It's also at the heart of the 'Teuchter Triangle' of highland bars, which might be of interest seeing as you're here for Celtic Connections. Other bars include the Islay Inn, the Park Bar, and the Snaffle bit. Good chance of hearing some folk music, and the Park Bar has framed photos of CalMac ferries, for us homesick Gaels.

For Ales, go to the Three Judges - it's at the southern end of Byres Road at the cross between Byres and Dumbarton Road.
For modern bars, anywhere on Ashton Lane is OK, but they are really expensive, and a bit generic (with the possible exception of the Loft) so be warned. Bar Buddha on Cresswell Lane just behind Byres road is quite cosy, and until January 31st all drinks are £2 ![]() The Left Bank on Gibson Street is quite good too, but expensive, as is Cottiers (a personal favourite) up on Hyndland Road. I suggest you Google Maps these suggestions to get a feel for distances between all of the suggestions posted on here to you. For food, Cafe Andaluz just off Byres Road (Cresswell Street/Lane) is good for Tapas, Chow on Byres Road is good for Chinese, as Milton says, best place for Indian is definitely the Wee Curry Shop on Ashton Lane, but you MUST book in advance - the place is tiny and you'll never get a table on the night. Best place for Italian (at a reasonable price) is probably the Italian Kitchen down in the Merchant City. There's a new Italian Tapas restaurant on Byres road that looks interesting, but I can't remember the name. Little Italy on Byres is great for a quick snack or lunch Italian style. Trattoria Trevi on Great Western Road was great last couple of times I tried it, but it's changed hands since, not sure what it's like now. Bombay Blues down on Hope Street in the city centre does an awesome Indian Buffet - it's nothing like a crappy China Buffet King or anything - really high quality, fresh curries, for £10ish - well worth it, but quite out of the way if you want to stay around the West End. What sort of food are you looking to eat? Go see St Mirren, Queens Park are rank beyond belief. For cheap food, studenty food, the Common Room on Byres Road does fantastic burgers at reasonable prices. Will try post some more local West End suggestions tomorrow.

If heading down to Argyle Street for the Ben Nevis/Islay Inn etc (I agree btw - a good idea), it's also worth popping into a few of the bars down there. Finniston is now blessed with the best selection in Glasgow imo.
Look up the IVY (just moved to where 54 below used to be), Gazelle, Lebowski's, Chinaski, Black Sparrow, Firebird. Also more ales to be had at The Bon Accord. |

403 miles driving up the M6.
Just over 4 hours by tilting train up the West Coast Mainline. About an hour flying.

Aye, I'd never seen it all until recently, then watched the whole run on 4OD over a few nights. Absolute genius, and so refreshing to see comedy set in Glasgow that's not of the Rab C Nesbit / Chewing the Fat variety.

June is often the warmest month in Scotland, but for you, it will feel pretty cold. Max daily temperatures are unlikely to get much beyond 25 degrees celsius and it will usually be considerably cooler than that. Bring warm clothes and waterproofs. On the other hand, be ready to enjoy our wonderful evenings at that time of year, where it stays bright until 10pm. Hope you enjoy your trip
