He recalled that when UPA government came to power in 2004, 1.17 lakh villages in India did not have power and since then, around 68,000 villages have been electrified and others
would be covered in the next two years.

"India would achieve self-reliance in producing power generation equipment in one-and-a-half years. The equipment and ancillaries like turbines were now mostly being produced by public sector Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. More companies had entered the sector in recent times," he said.

The minister noted that the government was taking effective measures to bring down transmission losses.

"The achievement of Kerala in this regard has been commendable as transmission loss of the state grid stands at 18.7%, against the national average of 37%," he said.

The total electrification campaign was taken up as a major programme by the LDF Government after it came to power in
2006.

It was projected as an important an achievement like the record set by the state in securing cent per cent literacy and universal education.

State electricity minister, A K Balan, who also spoke, said works totalling Rs 545 crore had been taken up for creating or upgrading power infrastructure in the district in the last four years.

"Taking electricity to every nook and corner of the sprawling agrarian district, parts of which are hilly terrain with tribal population was an ambitious task," he said.

The minister said the Palakkad model would be extended to other parts of Kerala to achieve the goal of total electrification within a few years.

State opposition leader Oommen Chandy was among those present on the occasion.
Great achievement. Let this spread to all the districts in the immedeate future. Kudos to AK. Balan.

BEML unit to be opened next month...

PALAKKAD: The new manufacturing unit of BEML Ltd. (formerly Bharat Earth Movers Limited) at Kanjikode near here will be inaugurated by Defence Minister A.K. Antony on May 9.

Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan, Industries Minister Elamaram Karim and other dignitaries will be attending the inaugural function.

The construction of the unit at Kanjikode in the 350-acre land given by the State government is getting completed. BEML Ltd., under the Ministry of Defence, will manufacture defence equipment, including military wagons, floating bridges, parts and aggregates for rail and metro cars.

Second phase

In the second phase of the project, the new complex would manufacture indigenously designed and developed aluminium and stainless steel 100-tonne freight wagons and other products, company sources said.

The foundation stone for the BEML unit at Kanjikode was laid by Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan on January 18, 2009.

Over the last four decades, BEML, a Mini-Ratna Category-1 company, has been working in the field of design, development and manufacture of heavy earth moving equipment, rail coaches and metro cars and various types of heavy duty trucks for defence.

BEML centre at the Kinfra Integrated Industrial area at Kanjikode,

PALAKKAD: Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) will open its fourth manufacturing complex at the Kinfra Integrated Industrial area at Kanjikode, near here, on Sunday.

Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan will inaugurate the function. Defence Minister A K Antony will preside over it. Opposition Leader Oommen Chandy and Industries Minister Elamaram Kareem will be present.

The production will begin on Monday.

Chairman-cum-managing director of BEML Limited V R S Natarajan told mediapersons here on Friday that the plant will begin production of vehicles, floating bridges and mil wagons for the Defence sector from Monday. He said that of the Rs 260 crore planned to be spent in the first phase, Rs 130 crore has been spent. The remaining amount will be spent in the second phase as and when additional land is allotted by the State Government.

In the first phase, the government had handed over 375 acres of land which had been acquired by Kinfra. The factory comprises an area of 2 lakh square feet area with two separate hangars. The foundation stone for the plant was laid on January 18, 2009. Though the plant was to be commissioned within 18 months, it has been completed in record time.

Natarajan said the new complex of BEML here would be a dedicated centre for the manufacture of defence equipment. Rail coach assembling such as bogie frames, side walls, end walls, rail coach bogie frames, LHB aggregates, other rail parts and spares will also be manufactured here in the second phase.

The chairman of BEML said the State Government has agreed to provide land for rail connectivity to BEML for its rail manufacturing facility, which is coming up in the second phase with the support of the State Government. It has provided direct employment to 200 people and will increase to 500 people after the completion of the second phase.

Field guns: BEML India has tied up with DMC International of Czhechoslovakia for the manufacture of the wheeled guns. It will supply 180 numbers of these guns within the next three and a half years. Similarly, it will also produce 100 numbers of tracted guns which are used in rough and sandy terrains.

Dedicated freight corridor: Natarajan said BEML Limited has written to the Railways that it was willing to produce 100-tonne-capacity stainless steel wagons under publicprivate participation.

Aerospace: BEML Limited also plans to diversify into the aerospace manufacturing division field. It will be engaged in aerospace design and the manufacturing of aggregates and parts.

Turnover and profits: Natarajan said the provisional turnover for 2009-10 is Rs 3,545 crore and the provisional profit has been pegged at Rs 290 crore.

The order book position as on March 31, 2010, was Rs 5,127 crore. He said that with the commissioning of the Palakkad plant, it is felt that BEML India will be able to achieve a turnover of Rs 5,000 crore by 2011- 12.

Phase-1 BEML Facility Operations Begin May 16

Bharat Earth Movers Ltd (BEML) – the Bangalore-headquartered defense public sector undertaking – will begin Phase-I operations at its new Rs 260 crore ($57.4 million) greenfield plant at Kanjikode on May 16. India Defense Minister AK Antony will lead a high-level delegation at the event.

The new BEML complex, located in the district of Palakkad and state of Kerala, will be a dedicated center for the manufacture of defense equipment including BEML TATRA 6 X 6 and 8 X 8 vehicles, high-mobility off-road military vehicles, military wagons, floating PMS bridges, Sarvatra vehicles and military wagon superstructures, as well as parts and aggregates for rail and metro cars.

“The land for the purpose is being given by Kerala Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (KINFRA) to the extent of 1,000 acres,” BEML Chairman and Managing Director VRS Natarajan said. “We have already got 375 acres of land, and the unit has come up for production in record time of just over 15 months as against [a] planned 18 months. Rail coach assemblies such as bogie frames, side walls, end walls, LHB aggregates, [and] other rail parts and spares will also be manufactured here.”

AVIATION WEEK has learned the Kerala government has agreed to provide corridor land for rail connectivity along with other infrastructure facilities such as a bridge for BEML’s rail manufacturing facility in the project’s second phase. The site is strategically located near a seaport, airport and rail service.

Centre ready to start BEML unit's second phase at Kanjikode: Antony

PALAKKAD: Union Defence Minister A.K. Antony has said that his Ministry is ready to start a second phase project of BEML Limited at Kanjikode if the State government gives the remaining 625 acres of land promised earlier.

Presiding over the inauguration of the first phase of the BEML unit at Kanjikode near here on Sunday, the Minister said, ‘‘If the State government provides land and other infrastructure facilities, more Central projects will come to Kerala. The BEML project is a good example of cooperation of both the Central and State governments. We have to create a conducive atmosphere to attract more industries to the State.'' Mr. Antony said the State government should work together with the Centre so that more Central investment would come to the State. He complimented Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan and Industries Minister Elamaram Karim for providing all help in setting up the BEML unit in a record time of 18 months.

Safe for investment

He said there were obstacles in getting industries from the Central government because of the general impression that Kerala was not having the right climate for industries. But now things had changed and the people were aware that Kerala was safe for investment. All should work together to create a good environment for setting up industries in the State, the Minister said.

In his inaugural address, Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan said the Central government should take up the construction of the proposed Railway Coach Factory at Kanjikode immediately for which the State government had handed over 426 acres of land. He said the Railway Ministry was looking for a private partner to implement the project. But the State government wanted the coach factory to be in the public sector, and Mr. Antony should explore the possibility of BEML becoming a partner in implementing the project. The new unit of BEML should make rail coaches and other components for it, he said.

The Chief Minister said that if more Central units, including Defence projects, came to the State, the government would provide the required land and other infrastructure facilities.

Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy and Mr. Karim were the guests of honour at the function.

Not exactly sure of this.

But most of the industries are coming up in the Kanjikkode-Walayar belt - about 20-30 Kms from Coimbatore airport.

If I'm correct, some residential projects are also coming up near the scenic Malampuzha area.

Hello

I am considering buying a plot+villa from Chathkulam projects around 4 kms away from the Palakkad city. I am not very familiar with Kerala real estate and would like to know if anybody else has experience with Chathkulam developers and if they are good and keep their word. Also, would like to know if it is worthwhile staying in Palakkad. I am not looking at this as an investment, more of a place to settle when retired.

Regards

For a town like Palakkad, It will be better you spend some few days to find a property locally through agents or through personal contacts. Like anywhere else in Kerala, residential property prices in Palakkad also little bit high, but still it is a worthwhile investment. I will suggest you some suburban areas in northern parts like Olavacode,Akathethara, Railway colony and Puthupariyaram ,these places are well connected and good residential area.

Actually I have visited 2-3 times there.Sorry, Dont have any pics .I Will try to post some later. Anyway it will fall under the category 'Mall', Reliance trends , Kids entertainment and coffee- chocolate shops are the main attraction.

Escalators are there to connect all the four floors, but the Mall is not centralised A/c.
