The grassy Mt. Batulao in Batangas ![]() Mt. Batulao was recommended by my mountaineer office colleague for a fun weekend hike. She said it’s her favorite mountain because it’s easy to climb, clean and not crowded with campers. So I said, “Mt. Batulao with my nephew, Joevert, on Saturday then.” We’re both inexperienced mountain climbers (my first time to climb was only last week with Verns and Mark on Mt. Manabo, Batangas). Thirty minutes into the hike with a guide, we met three mountaineers---the real kind---who were enjoying the scenic view from a hilltop. We exchanged pleasantries and when they knew it’s just the two of us hiking, they invited us to join them at Camp 1. Because they’re social drinkers too (they brought gin while I brought brandy), I immediately said “yes.” Mountaineers Nino, Jaypee and Des whom we met on our way up Cut to the chase: we downed 2 liters of gin that night. Brandy was untouched. We couldn’t drink it anymore as it’s practically just the three of us (me and the two male mountaineers) drinking. What has this got to do with my fun weekend hike story here? A lot. Because the following day (and that’s today), I had some sort of a hangover and said “yes” to our newfound friends’ invitation to climb with them to the summit. Since I’m a bit scared of heights, I initially said “no” but when Des mentioned it’s an opportunity for me to get better pics up there, I changed my mind and decided to go. Joevert tagged along. My nephew, Joevert That was a mistake for me. Because only a few steps away from the windy Camp 7 where the trail slope was, I think, around 70 degrees, I felt dizzy. It’s acrophobia worsened by hangover. I was immobile for several minutes as I tightly held on to grasses while Joevert was behind me trying to goad me on. He's laughing at me, actually. Kids! Des was at Camp 7 grounds already also trying to coax me to proceed. “You can make it. Just don’t look down,” she said. Tough moment. And life is nothing but a series of decisions. If I continue, either I reach at least Camp 7 and take better pics from there or get out of balance and plunge to my death. Yay! If I retreat, I won’t get a better vantage point for my panoramic pics. And I’ll be a failure. Heck, it’s better to be a living failure than a dead failure. So, after what seemed like eternity, I decided to go back. But before that, I had to get this pic of Des: Des the encourager Joevert wanted to reach the summit too but being a loyal companion, he went back with me. Thank you. When we got to the area where it’s safer to stand, he took this pic of me: Moi, Abaniko See, I was sad because I never got to the peak. But happy just the same because I'm still alive. What can I say? I shall return, Mt. Batulao! I shall return....and drink less gin. http://abaniko.blogspot.com/2007/10/...-batangas.html
