Victoria registers record building activity

Sunday Herald Sun

September 02, 2007 12:00am

VICTORIA has recorded its highest month on record for building activity, the State Government says.

The total value for building permits issued in July was $1.9 billion - a 37.9 per cent increase on the same month last year, Victorian Planning Minister Justin Madden said.

"This is a great start to the new financial year," Mr Madden said.

"It is good news for Victoria and it is a sign of the robust condition of the building industry and of Victoria's economy more broadly."

More than 80 per cent of permits issued were in Melbourne.

Permits in regional Victoria totalled $365 million in value for the month.

"This is a growth of 14 per cent for regional Victoria on July 2006," Mr Madden said.

The building permit figures show houses, high-rise residential, commercial, healthcare and industrial approvals all grew, compared to July 2006, Mr Madden said.

However, retail and public buildings both dipped, he said.

Building Commissioner Tony Arnel said the figures showed almost a 21 per cent increase on the previous highest amount for building permits, which was $1.6 billion in June 2005.

Mr Arnel said figures for the 2007 calendar year to date were tracking at 6.4 per cent higher than at this time last year.
